NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER Desktop GPU Review: In touching distance of the GeForce RTX 2080

Is everything SUPER?

NVIDIA is pitching its refreshed RTX line-up against AMD and its Navi series. In this review, we will take a closer look at the GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER Founders Edition to see not only how it stacks up against other NVIDIA RTX cards but also the Radeon RX 5700 XT.

SUPER is NVIDIA's buzzword for its response to AMD's Navi GPUs. The former has released the RTX 2060 SUPER, RTX 2070 SUPER and RTX 2080 SUPER, with the RTX 2070 SUPER being the focus of this review. While the RTX 2060 SUPER and RTX 2080 SUPER are based on the same graphics chips as their predecessors, the RTX 2070 SUPER has moved up to the TU104 with the RTX 2070 being based on the TU106. Incidentally, the TU104 is the same chip on which the RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 SUPER are based. NVIDIA had reached the limits of the TU106 with the RTX 2070, so it makes sense to bump the RTX 2070 SUPER up to the TU104.

In short, the RTX 2070 SUPER is a lesser version of the RTX 2080 rather than a direct successor to the RTX 2070, the differences between which we have included in the table below. NVIDIA has also based the RTX 2070 SUPER on the same PCB as the RTX 2080, which undoubtedly saved on R&D costs.

The RTX 2070 SUPER Founders Edition is slightly longer than its predecessor, with NVIDIA adding a brushed aluminium plate between the two fans and "super" in NVIDIA green lettering. The RTX 2070 SUPER FE sports an additional 6-pin power connector too. Unsurprisingly, NVIDIA has kept the 6-pin connector in the same place as it is on the RTX 2080.

All RTX SUPER FE GPUs come with 8 GB of GDDR6 VRAM, meaning that the RTX 2070 SUPER has the same volume of VRAM as its namesake predecessor. The RTX 2070 SUPER has higher clock speeds, shader units, texture units, tensor cores, RT cores and a 40 W boosted TDP than the RTX 2070, giving it a 10 to 15% performance boost depending on the game or program being used. NVIDIA claims that these improvements put the RTX 2070 SUPER on par with a GTX 1080 Ti, the validity of which you can check by looking at our GPU comparison page. Technically, ray tracing and DLSS make the RTX 2070 SUPER superior to the GTX 1080 Ti, although that does not necessarily mean that the former will have better performance than the latter in games and programs.

The RTX 2070 SUPER has a 35 W lower TDP than the GTX 1080 Ti though, underlining the extent to which NVIDIA has improved the power efficiency of its GPUs between architectures. Conversely, the RTX 2070 SUPER can consume up to 40 W more than the RTX 2070. The RTX 2070 SUPER currently costs US$499, for reference.

The Test System

Our test system is based on the Gigabyte X470 Aorus Gaming 7 WiFi motherboard. We have paired the board with the AMD Ryzen 7 2700X, which delivers excellent performance on a budget, and a Be Quiet Silent Loop 280 mm AIO. We have also equipped the system with 16 GB RAM of G-Skill RAM that clocks at 3,400 MHz, all of which we have housed in a Corsair Carbide Air 540 ATX Cube case. Moreover, we have run all our tests on the Acer Predator XB321HK, a 4K monitor that also allows us to conduct UHD gaming benchmarks.

In Detail


The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super (RTX 2070S) is a high-end desktop graphics card and refresh of the 2018 RTX 2070. The card is now behind the RTX 2080 Ti and RTX 2080 Super (upcoming) as the third-fastest graphics card in the Nvidia lineup of consumer cards. It uses the big TU104 chip instead of the TU106 of the RTX 2070 and offers more cores (2,560 versus 2,304).

Features

NVIDIA manufactures the TU104 chip on a 12 nm FinFET process and includes features like Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) and Real-Time Ray Tracing (RTRT), which should combine to create more realistic lighting effects than older GPUs based on the company's Pascal architecture can (if the games supports it). The RTX 2070S is DisplayPort 1.4 ready, while there is also support for HDMI 2.0b, HDR, Simultaneous Multi-Projection (SMP) and H.265 video en/decoding (PlayReady 3.0).

Performance

The performance of the RTX 2070S is slightly better than the old GeForce GTX 1080 Ti. With the new ray-tracing and tensor cores, the RTX 2070S is clearly the better choice. The RTX 2070 Super is positioned in the high-end segment and therefore most current games should run fluently in 4k and high detail settings (but without ray tracing). Compared to AMD offerings, the RTX 2070 Super is aimed against the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT (Navi).

Power Requirements

NVIDIA estimates that the RTX 2070S should consume a maximum of 215 W (RTX 2070 - 175 Watt). In our gaming tests, the RTX 2070 Super was more power-efficient than the old GeForce GTX 1080 Ti (339 versus 296 Watt for the test system running The Witcher 3).

Clock Speeds

As we covered in the table above, the RTX 2070 SUPER FE has a 1,605 MHz base clock, which it can turbo up to 1,770 MHz when needed. However, NVIDIA only gives the latter as a guideline, with the GPU able to consistently maintain 1,800 MHz during our tests. NVIDIA also allows the TDP to be manually increased by 20% or reduced by 42%. The 8 GB of VRAM is clocked at 14 GHz, just like it is in the RTX 2080.

Synthetic Benchmarks

Synthetic benchmarks demonstrate that the RTX 2070 SUPER FE is superior to the RTX 2070 Gaming Z 8G, despite the latter being an overclocked version of the original RTX 2070. Hence, the RTX 2070 SUPER FE should extend an even larger lead over its direct predecessor. The Radeon RX 5700 XT should not be underestimated though, with it outperforming the RTX 2070 SUPER FE in some 3DMark and 3DMark 11 benchmarks. However, Unigine Heaven 4.0 and Valley 1.0 still massively favour NVIDIA GPUs over AMD ones.

Synthetic benchmarks have demonstrated that the RTX 2070 SUPER FE is an improvement even upon its overclocked predecessors, but the jump in gaming performance is stark. Our review unit can play practically every modern triple-A title in QHD at maximum graphics, with only Anno 1800 dipping below an average of 50 FPS. Most games remain above 60 FPS in 4K too, although we recommend dropping the quality level down for the likes of Anno 1800, Metro Exodus, Monster Hunter World and a few other titles. You can see the full list of games we tested below.

Generally, the RTX 2070 SUPER FE outperforms the Radeon RX 5700 XT in games, but keep in mind that some are better optimised for NVIDIA than they are AMD and vice versa. While AMD advertises the Radeon RX 5700 XT as being specifically designed for 1440p gaming, the RTX 2070 SUPER FE gets its nose in front.

We also measured frame times and frame rates while playing The Witcher 3 at 1080p on the ultra preset. There were a few outliers in our tests, but nothing that was overly concerning. Our system averaged 96.8 FPS during this test, emphasising not only the power of the RTX 2070 SUPER FE but also the effectiveness of its cooler.

Compute Performance

The RTX 2070 SUPER FE has better compute performance than its predecessor, mainly because of its higher clock speeds. Expectedly, our review unit falls short of the MSI RTX 2080 Gaming X Trio, but the RTX 2070 SUPER FE generally outperforms our other comparison GPUs, including the Radeon RX 5700 XT. The RTX 2070 Gaming Z 8G, for instance, is up to 30% slower than our review unit in compute benchmarks. Performance varies considerably depending on the benchmark though, with the Radeon RX 5700 XT scoring up to 196% higher frame rates in SPECviewperf 13. Overall, the RTX 2070 SUPER FE generally outscores the Radeon RX 5700 series by a few percent.

As mentioned earlier, the RTX 2070 SUPER FE has a 215 W TDP, 40 W higher than the product spec of the RTX 2070 and 30 W higher than the RTX 2070 FE. The RTX 2070 SUPER FE still consumes 35 W less than the GTX 1080 Ti though, making the former about 16% more efficient than the latter.

Our test system consumed just under 80 W when idling, which is about what we expected for the RTX 2070 SUPER FE. It is worth keeping in mind that our power consumption measurements discount that which a monitor would consume. The system peaked at 326 W during our stress tests, making it slightly more efficient than an RTX 2070 Gaming Z 8G and on par with the Radeon RX 5700 XT. However, the latter offers better value per watt, considering its cheaper MSRP.

Raising the power target to 120% allows the RTX 2070 SUPER FE to consume a maximum of 258 W. Rerunning our stress test resulted in an average system power draw of 374 W too.

We also left The Witcher 3 running for an hour to see how our system managed its power consumption under sustained load. We set the game to Full HD on the ultra preset, during which our system averaged 344 W with occasional peaks of 370 W. Incidentally, the Radeon RX 5700 XT consumed slightly more in this test.

We also measured any changes in temperatures, which revealed that NVIDIA has done a good job at cooling the RTX 2070 SUPER FE. We conducted our sustained load performance tests with our GPU in a closed case to replicate how it would be typically used. Core temperatures stayed around 72 °C and peaked at 77 °C, with both being well below the GPU’s critical operating temperature.

The only drawback of the RTX 2070 SUPER FE is its fans, despite their effectiveness. There is currently no way to disable them, with the fans spinning away even at idle. The fans are noisy under load too, although not disturbingly so. However, the fan noise is compounded by coil whine, which is louder at higher frame rates.

Overclocking

The RTX 2070 SUPER has enough headroom for some mild overclocking. However, the GPU will consume more power per watt than when it is running at stock settings, which may concern some people. Moreover, no two GPUs are identical, so the degree to which you will be able to overclock your RTX 2070 SUPER will vary from our results. Our review unit could represent the best or worst overclocking potential that the GPU has, but there is no way to know this without testing hundreds or thousands of cards.

Our test device can stably maintain an overclock of 150 MHz on its GPU and 1,000 MHz on its VRAM. These boosts also increase the memory bandwidth from 448 GB/S to 512 GB/s.

Overall, our overclocks achieved about 10% improved performance in games and programs. However, the RTX 2070 SUPER could only maintain our changes with a 20% increased power limit. In short, 10% better frame rates will cost you 20% more power consumption.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER Founders Edition sees off the onslaught of AMD and its new Navi GPUs before they are even released. In short, the RTX 2070 SUPER outperforms the Radeon RX 5700 XT in almost every game we benchmarked, albeit sometimes the margins were fine.

The RTX 2070 SUPER is effectively a cut-down RTX 2080, with the two GPUs sharing everything down to the PCB. This is not necessarily a criticism though as it reduces R&D costs, which NVIDIA can pass onto the consumer as a cheaper GPU. 8 GB of GDDR6 VRAM remains enough to play all modern triple-A games in QHD at maximum details, although the RTX 2070 SUPER occasionally runs out of steam on the same graphics settings in 4K.

The GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER Founders Edition looks and performs like a high-end desktop GPU. NVIDIA has seen off AMD before it has brought its Navi cards to market while also offering DLSS and ray tracing, of which no Radeon GPUs are currently capable.

The degree of similarities between the RTX 2070 SUPER and RTX 2080 raises the question of who it is suited for. The RTX 2060 SUPER further complicates matters, as NVIDIA has also equipped this with 8 GB of GDDR6 VRAM, making it powerful enough to play games in UHD at maximum graphics too. The RTX 2070 SUPER is about 10 to 15% faster than the RTX 2060 SUPER, while also being 25% more expensive. The RTX 2070 SUPER consumes 40 W more power than the RTX 2060 SUPER too, although the former is more economic than the Radeon RX 5700 XT despite being manufactured on a technically inferior FinFET process.

Ultimately, the choice between the RTX 2070 SUPER and RTX 2060 SUPER comes down to what you value in a GPU. If you would rather keep US$100 in your pocket then buy the RTX 2060 SUPER. By contrast, if you want a GPU that achieves between 10% to 15% better frame rates at the same resolution and graphics settings, then go for the RTX 2070 SUPER.

Our main gripe about the RTX 2070 SUPER is its fan control. NVIDIA has opted to keep the fans running even at idle, which may irritate some people. This cannot be overridden either. Worse still, our review unit suffers from coil whine that we can hear while playing games even when the GPU is housed in a closed case.

Overall, the RTX 2070 SUPER FE is a good choice if you are in the market for a US$500 desktop graphics card. However, you may be able to find a discontinued original RTX 2080 for cheaper, while you could save US$100 by purchasing the RTX 2060 SUPER instead if you can put up with between 10% and 15% worse performance.
