The game engine known as Glacier Engine leaves a rather ambiguous impression. Visually, the game looks very impressive. Hitman 2 scores some major points with its sharp textures, good lighting and great shadows. The game world is also very well detailed. No matter whether you are indoors or outdoors, everything seems like a lot of time and effort was put into it. The sheer number of passers-by is very impressive as well. We are not aware of any other game that has this many people on the streets. This is why the game world feels cramped and atmospheric.

Speaking of menus: The number of graphics settings is well within reasonable bounds. Besides the resolution, the display mode, the vertical synchronization and the gamma correction, there are also a few other settings that can be adjusted. Once again, applying new graphics settings does not require a restart, which would have been annoying because of the unskippable introductory videos. Positive: Hitman 2 can be played in HDR mode on certain monitors. The edges of the objects can be smoothed with the help of super sampling, which we disabled during our benchmarks by setting the super sampling slider to 1. The DirectX 12 mode of the predecessor, which was rather hit and miss, was not included by the developers in Hitman 2.

Attention: On weaker systems that do not have enough video memory, certain graphics settings are locked. However, this behavior can be overridden in the options menu of the game launcher (Override Memory Safeguards). Anyhow, there are only very slight differences between the medium, high and ultra presets. The game starts to look noticeably worse only when you set the details to low and disable SSAO. The shadows and textures also look considerably worse when set to low.
With the help of our benchmarks chart, you can see that the main bottleneck even in very powerful systems is frequently not the GPU, but the CPU. This can be seen in the unfortunate case of the Alienware 17 R4; its Core i7-7820HK throttles down due to a poorly designed cooling solution, which makes the otherwise very fast GTX 1080 seem rather slow.
Benchmarks
For our benchmarks, we use the beginning of the story mission called "The Finish Line," which is set at a racetrack. Right after the game is loaded, we use Fraps to record a 45-second long frame-rate graph. In order to clear the security at the racetrack we start the mission without a weapon (see video).
Because there is quite a lot of variation between the benchmark runs on account of the constantly changing number of passers-by, the results are not 100% accurate, but nevertheless they are still good enough to compare and rank the performance of different graphics cards.

HD (1280x720)
Those who can live with the lowest settings and 720p resolution will need at least a current mid-range or an older high-end GPU to run Hitman 2. Entry-level graphics solutions such as the Intel HD Graphics 630 are hopelessly overwhelmed even on the lowest settings.

FHD (1920x1080)
If you want to run Hitman 2 at 1080p, then you will need a genuine gaming notebook. You will need at the very least a GeForce GTX 970M or GTX 1050 Ti to run the game at 1920x1080 on medium to maximum settings.

QHD (2560x1440) & UHD (3840x2160)
Things get serious at higher resolutions. If you want to run the game at 1440p on ultra settings, you will need at least a GeForce GTX 1060. Even the GeForce GTX 1080 can barely handle running Hitman 2 in 4K.
