Once you have launched the game it quickly becomes apparent that the latest title in the beloved Anno series looks absolutely gorgeous. When you zoom out you will see high-quality shadows, sharp textures, superb effects (such as water reflections) and very dense vegetation. When you zoom in, you will see plenty of fine detail. All of this attests to the fact that the game had a big production budget.
We find both the game engine and the graphics settings menu to be quite praiseworthy. There are almost 20 options in the settings menu, which is more than usual for a PC title. Users can change the resolution, adjust the anti-aliasing, switch between different display modes, lower or raise the gamma, and select the preferred DirectX mode (DX11 or DX12). Moreover, there are also many graphics settings, which can be adjusted in a quick fashion through 5 built-in presets.
The fact that certain changes in the graphics settings require a restart to take effect does not prove to be very bothersome, because the loading times are not very long and introductory videos can be skipped. The game crashed on some of the systems that we used for this performance analysis. Crashes primarily occurred when starting the game, during loading or when going from one menu screen to another in the settings menu.
But back to the graphics: Anno 1800 looks great even on medium settings and it does not turn into an ugly mess on low settings either. Attention: The performance varies a lot from preset to preset, which can be attributed in large part to the anti-aliasing. The ultra preset sets the anti-aliasing to 8x, which is significantly more demanding than the 4x that you get on the high preset. According to our measurements, the game runs 50% smoother on the high preset than on the ultra preset. The very high preset is a good compromise, if you run into performance problems on the ultra preset.
In general, it is very hard to measure the performance of Anno 1800, because the frame rate fluctuates greatly depending on the zoom level and population density (small settlements vs. big cities). Here’s an example: At 1080p on the highest settings, the frame rates that we got with the GTX 1080 on our first, large campaign map fluctuated between 30 and 120 FPS. Just like with many other 3D titles, the GPU is the main limiting factor for Anno 1800 on high settings and at high resolutions. However, when gaming on medium settings and at modest resolutions, the performance can become limited by the CPU.
Benchmarks
Our benchmark run consists of very demanding scenes. As you can see in the video below, in the benchmark we press F10 to auto-rotate the camera over the enemy’s city in the first campaign mission. The camera rotates once over the city center, which takes about 40 seconds.
Results
HD (1280x720)
At 720p, the low preset does not require a whole lot of horsepower. While integrated GPUs such as the Intel HD Graphics 630 fail to keep their heads above water most of the time, the dedicated graphics solutions such as the GeForce MX150 manage to run the game fairly smoothly (because of the aerial view, 30 FPS is sufficient).

FHD (1920x1080)
At 1080p, you will need a gaming or powerful multimedia notebook. The GeForce GTX 1050 is good enough for the medium preset and the GTX 1050 Ti can reach playable frame rates on the high preset. The ultra preset requires a GTX 1070 or better.

QHD (2560x1440) & UHD (3840x2160)
Things get real when you try to game at resolutions higher than Full HD. Here, you will need something like a GeForce GTX 1080 to achieve playable frame rates on the highest settings at 1440p. Almost all GPUs fail to stay above 30 FPS at 2160p. In the world of notebooks, only the RTX 2080 is powerful enough for gaming on ultra settings.

Note
Because gaming benchmarks require a lot of time and are further constrained by installation limits, we can only provide you with a part of the benchmarks when we first put this article online. More graphics cards will be added in the coming days and weeks.
