GRID Legends in test: Notebook and desktop benchmarks

Moderate requirements. GRID Legends can boast a lot of gameplay variety thanks to the great number of vehicle classes. We analyze whether the technology is also convincing in our benchmark check.

Technology

Launch of GRID Legends, from developer Codemasters, is good news for racing fans. As usual for the series, the title offers a driving model that appears to be a successful mix of arcade and simulation.

Although GRID Legends does not visually match the level of the current most beautiful racing Forza Horizon 5 we would describe the graphics as good. Besides the effects (sparks, smoke, reflections, ...), the track details (balloons, spectators, flags, ...) are also pleasing. Other plus points are the high visibility, the dense landscape vegetation, and the fancy lighting - only the destruction model could be more extensive. The story campaign and the good sound together create a good racing atmosphere.

The title can also almost not be accused of anything technically: we did not experience any crashes or (except Intel's iGPU) graphics errors in the test. We also did not encounter any bugs.

If you open the video menu, which is much more responsive and comfortable than in other/older Codemasters games, you will find two tidy tabs. While Basic primarily takes care of the resolution and the picture mode, Advanced contains 16 individual settings and 5 presets, which partly require a restart when changing them. It is also a pity that explanatory texts and/or comparison pictures for the different settings are missing. The game size turns out to be completely acceptable with a download of around 29 GB. The start and loading times of the game are okay.

Benchmark

As expected, GRID Legends includes an integrated performance test. The benchmark is situated right at the beginning of the extended video menu. In contrast to F1 2021, there is no track and weather selection, but the results are representative, not least because of the high benchmark duration (over 2 minutes). As you can see from the video below, the game shows a race in San Francisco with changing camera angles and FPS numbers. A final evaluation including a performance graph appears at the end of the benchmark.

Results

For the benchmarks, we mainly use loan devices from our partners XMG (Schenker Technologies) and MSI.

FHD (1,920 x 1,080)

When using 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, even some low-end GPUs can cope with GRID Legends. The Iris Xe Graphics G7 (96 EUs) at least manages the low preset smoothly. Midrange models like the GeForce GTX 1650 (Ti) can even handle ultra details with just under 60 FPS. In case you are wondering about the somewhat strange ranking: with moderate resolutions and settings, the frame rate can be limited by the CPU instead of the GPU.

QHD (2,560 x 1,440)

For a mix of 2,560 x 1,440 pixels and maximum settings, performance should be ok from the upper mid-range. Besides the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, the RTX 3050 Ti among others, scratches at the 60 FPS mark.

UHD (3,840 x 2,160)

Only high-end GPUs can ensure normal performance in the 4K range. If you want to gamble with 3,840 x 2,160 pixels and all sliders set to maximum, you will need at least a GeForce RTX 3060 (or better yet an RTX 3070).
