Enshrouded review: Laptop and desktop benchmarks

We currently run our gaming benchmarks using these devices. Clicking on the photos will take you to the respective manufacturer's website. Further details on their specifications are listed at the end of the article.
Tech
The role-playing game Enshrouded has very quickly fought its way to the top amongst Steam users, competing with the recently released Palworld which has amassed an even larger following. No wonder, as it features a very interesting gameplay, combining lots of aspects from different genres into a very interesting whole concept. Aside from an interesting story, Enshrouded also boasts impressive graphics. The game world looks very nice thanks to its mostly sharp textures, great effects, dense vegetation as well as its wide field of view. At the same time, this makes the game's hardware requirements quite high, which we will be discussing shortly. The developer could do with improving the animations a little, as they appear a bit choppy at times. In general, however, Enshrouded can be controlled pretty smoothly.
Tech-wise, we never had any larger issues during our test—apart from a slightly rough performance (Palworld makes a generally "smoother" impression). This isn't always the case in an early-access game. Although the shaders have to first be compiled when booting up the game, this process doesn't take as long as in other games (such as The Last of Us).
Most users should be content with the game's graphics menu. Within "Monitor", you can change the picture mode, resolution (including scaling), V-Sync and the field of view. If you select "Quality", you can choose between five practical presets which affect more than ten individual options. Explanations help users to understand each setting. Another positive: Changes are adopted without having to restart the game.
On the other hand, it's a bit of a shame that some presets have upscaling automatically selected. Although we made use of these presets for our measurements, we deactivated DLSS and FSR (apart from during the dedicated 4K tests). FXAA and DLAA (on Nvidia systems) are also available to help with edge smoothing.
Benchmark
We used the beginning of the game for the benchmark, where the main character enters into the open world through a sort of temple. We recorded a 30-second run using CapFrameX which included about 50 % inside space and 50 % outside space, in order to capture as many different scenarios as possible. We would class Enshrouded as playable from an average of 40 fps.
Results
FHD (1,920 x 1,080)
In terms of graphics, this game is a lot more demanding than Palworld. While a Radeon 780M is enough to play the latter at 1,920 x 1,080 pixels and low details, the iGPU fails to run Enshrouded even at 1,280 x 720 pixels—not even managing 30 fps. This means you will need at least a mid-range component for the RPG. Current models such as the GeForce RTX 4050 or the Radeon RX 7600S manage Full HD with high settings. For the maximum preset, we would recommend a GeForce RTX 4060 or better.

QHD (2,560 x 1,440)
For QHD, you almost already require a high-end GPU. 2,560 x 1,440 pixels and the preset "maximum quality" only runs well using a GeForce RTX 4070 or better.

UHD (3,840 x 2,160)
A combination of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels and full details pretty much overwhelms all laptop chips. Even Nvidia's current top-of-the-range model, the GeForce RTX 4090, doesn't manage 40 fps on average. As usual, upscaling could prove to help with this. With DLSS activated (we used the "quality" setting), you can play Enshrouded in 4K from a GeForce RTX 4080 onwards.
