Heat's graphics are based on the versatile engine from DICE, the developers behind the Battlefield franchise. The company's powerful Frostbite 3 engine cuts a fine figure not only in first- and third-person shooters (Battlefront 2, Anthem, Mirror's Edge Catalyst, etc.) but also in RPGs (Dragon Age Inquisition, Mass Effect Andromeda, etc.), sport simulations (FIFA 20), and racing games.

The same goes for the new Need for Speed, which does not have to hide behind the likes of GRID 2019. To be sure, visually there is still room for improvement in some parts, but all in all Heat's graphics can convince. The good effects and the really detailed vehicles are especially great. The implementation of destructible environments is one of the strong points of the engine as well. Nearly every object on the street can be destroyed with one's sport car, be it road signs, lights, or trees.
But the atmosphere of Heat leaves an ambiguous impression. Indeed, the opulent view and the huge vegetation create a fitting ambience but at the same time the world seems lifeless due to missing pedestrians. Furthermore, the developers should revise the far from perfect driving behavior, the limited damage model, the AI (other cars cause too many accidents) and the overall balance (police cheats). The same goes for the loading times, which are especially long when combined with old HDDs.

We cannot criticize the graphics menu, though. Changes are kept without needing to restart the game and the custom mode allows for 13 separate options that can be quickly adjusted by presets. Notwithstanding the above, Vertical Synchronization, HDR, and Motion Blur can be switched on and off easily. Moreover, an optional Resolution Scaling (our scores are based on the standard option of 100%) completes the picture. The download size is about 31 GB.
Benchmark
Gaming speed scores can be easily measured by the Fraps tool since the game allows only DirectX 11 and doesn't offer DirectX 12. The video below shows that we don't use a preset race for benchmarking but an individually built route through the city. First, we fast travel to the Part Shop, which can be unlocked early in the game. After that, we open the map again and set a waypoint to the Tornado circuit track, which should have been unlocked at the start of the campaign as well.
The ride along the yellow navigation line is about a minute long and offers a good assessment of the anticipated overall performance within the game (it's not a worst-case scenario). One should aim for at least 40 fps to smoothly play the game. Serious gamers will prefer a frame rate of at least 60 fps, though.

HD (1280x720)
Even though the system requirements are moderate we recommend a dedicated graphics card. Accordingly, a Radeon RX Vega 8 failed to deliver a smooth performance even in 1280x720 resolution and a low preset. But you should be safe to play in these options if you own at least a midrange GPU like the GeForce GTX 950M.

FHD (1920x1080)
We recommend a GPU of the upper midrange class to play Heat smoothly on an FHD screen. While a GeForce GTX 1050 Ti should be sufficient for medium and high presets, your gaming device should sport at least a GeForce GTX 1650 for the ultra preset.

QHD (2560x1440) & UHD (3840x2160)
All higher resolutions demand a high-end chip. GPUs like the GeForce GTX 1070 or GTX 1660 Ti should be able to master 2560x1440 resolution and maximum details. If you want to play in 4K and ultra preset then you should own Nvidia's top model GeForce RTX 2080.

Note
Game-benchmarking is very time consuming and often further impeded by activation limits and the like. Hence, we only offer a part of our benchmark scores at this time but we will deliver scores with additional graphics cards in the upcoming days and weeks.
