With Borderlands 3, even if the story falls slightly short of expectations or possibilities, Gearbox delivers exactly the experience that a large number of players hoped for and wanted. In a post-apocalyptic world, you fight against all kinds of bandits and beasts, either alone or in a team with several friends.
The developers achieved a particularly good sense of movement once again. Similar to Doom, for example, from the shooter expert id Software, the title runs extremely smoothly and is no trouble to play, provided there is enough graphics power. The high game speed coupled with the insane action, the rich effects, and the hunt for better and better equipment, has real addictive potential.

Unfortunately, the whole grandiloquence can only partially make up for some technical weaknesses. Although the graphics in the cel-shading look quite good at first glance, Borderlands 3 reveals a rather poor texture quality on closer inspection. For a shooter from 2019, most object surfaces make a quite sloppy impression. The lighting is no longer up to date either. The underlying Unreal Engine 4 seems a bit dusty now – at least when Borderlands 3 is taken as a basis.
There's less to complain about in terms of graphics options. Due to the sheer volume, Gearbox has divided the settings into two menus, starting with the basic tab. This handles the resolution and its scaling, the image mode or format, the field of view, the HUD size and the vertical synchronization. Here you will also find an optional frame-rate lock, which was of course deactivated for our tests.
The advanced menu is even more extensive since it contains a generous 16 individual settings, which can be adjusted globally in one go by overall quality. A total of six presets are available, ranging from very low to Badass.

As can be seen from the screenshots below, the game becomes perceivably less attractive on minimal settings. Starting from medium details, we would speak of an acceptable look, whereby the higher levels, with the exception of the shadow quality and the vegetation density, hardly provide any improvement.
Nice: Changes are applied directly so that you don't have to restart the game. The explanatory texts for the various options also deserve praise. The DirectX 12 mode performs less well, according to various reports. For this reason, we constantly used the classic DirectX 11.
Currently, however, Borderlands 3 also has to deal with certain difficulties in DX11 mode. When it comes to our tests, there's some short occasional choppiness and rare performance fluctuations, regardless of the hardware installed and the settings chosen. However, we didn't experience any crashes, which many buyers report.
Generally speaking, the hardware requirements seem a bit heavy in relationship to the graphics quality. With a little more optimization work, a more decent and mature game could have been presented upon release. Nonetheless, it's assumed that Gearbox will improve performance with upcoming patches.
Benchmarks
Respect is due to the developers for the built-in benchmark, which significantly facilitates speed measurements and guarantees fair comparison conditions. In the nearly two-minute sequence (see video) we experience a fancy camera ride through the partly densely wooded wasteland, which is combined with some figures and gunfights.
Based on the experience we've had so far, the frame-rate is slightly lower in the benchmark (probably due to the anomalous camera angle) than in the "normal" game. The latter runs about 10-20% faster, which is why a benchmark result of 40+ FPS would indicate sufficient performance. Positive: If you want, you can get a simple or detailed benchmark report from the game. The frame rate is displayed during the benchmark either way.
Results
HD (1280x720)
As already indicated, Borderlands 3 is quite demanding in terms of hardware. Even when reducing the resolution to 1280x720 and using minimal settings, entry-level chips at the level of the Radeon RX Vega 8 tend to be overstrained. An older mid-range GPU (the GTX 950M, for example) is required at least for these settings. In case you're wondering about the ranking in the HD table: Above a certain graphics power, Borderlands 3 runs into the CPU limit.

For 1920x1080 pixels and medium details, a real gaming model is ultimately required. While a GeForce GTX 1050 Ti is still sufficient for the medium preset, we recommend at least a GeForce GTX 1060 or GTX 1650 for high details. Maximum details, meanwhile, require a GeForce GTX 1070, a GTX 1660 Ti, or something faster.

The game's visuals become properly crisp with a combination of 2560x1440 pixels and the Badass preset. You can't go around having an expensive high-end representative at the level of the GeForce GTX 1080 or the RTX 2070 here. 3840x2160 pixels at maximum settings is currently too much for any laptop chip.
