F1 22 in test: Notebook and desktop benchmarks
Technology
EA has released the second Formula 1 game since it bought out developer Codemasters. One of the biggest differences to the 2021 edition is the extended ray tracing, which is now represented with 5 settings, but with a significant performance cost.
Visually, the developer once again delivers a good product. Thanks to the numerous spectators and other decorative elements along the track, the races look quite atmospheric. Not to mention the detailed vehicles.
As known from the predecessors, F1 22 also has a very extensive graphics menu. Almost 20 advanced options are available in the Graphics Settings, which can be adjusted in one go via Detail Preset (usually no restart is necessary).
If you open the Video Mode submenu, you will find numerous other settings that primarily deal with the screen (resolution to refresh rate). There ,ou'll also discover an optional frame rate limit and the possibility of dynamic resolution. TAA (used for the benchmarks), DLSS (Nvidia) and FSR (AMD) are available as edge smoothing.
Unfortunately, F1 22 doesn't look quite technically mature yet. We had one or two crashes, especially with AMD systems. The title did not start at all on Intel's iGPU Iris Xe Graphics G7 despite using the latest driver.
The fact that the FPS is sometimes half as high as in F1 2021 when using the Ultra preset is probably primarily due to the stronger ray tracing. Analogous to the predecessors, the processor's performance is very relevant in lower resolutions and settings, which manifests itself here and there in a CPU limitation.
Benchmark
F1 22 once again offers an integrated benchmark that includes multiple tracks, weather conditions and camera modes. Our measurements are based on a race in Australia with clear skies and changing camera perspectives - see video.
FHD (1,920 x 1,080)
As long as you don't use ray tracing, F1 22's system requirements are very moderate. Mid-range GPUs like the GeForce RTX 3050 (Ti) can easily handle high settings. However, it gets really demanding in the ultra preset when the game activates all RT features. This requires a "real" gaming graphics card on the level of the GeForce RTX 3060.
The fact that AMD currently does not offer particularly good ray tracing performance can be seen very well in the Radeon RX 6800M and 6600M, where the performance drop is especially high in resolutions beyond Full HD.

QHD (2,560 x 1,440)
Owners of a QHD display inevitably need a high-end system for maximum settings. 2,560 x 1,440 pixels and the Ultra preset only run smoothly with a GeForce RTX 3070.

UHD (3,840 x 2,160)
A combination of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels and full details currently overtaxes even the fastest laptops. You can hardly avoid a desktop PC with a GeForce RTX 3080 or better.

Note
Since gaming tests are very time-consuming and often restricted by installation or activation limits, we can only provide you with a part of the benchmarks for the publication of the articles. More graphics cards will be installed in the coming days and weeks.
