F1 2020 Laptop and Desktop Benchmarks

Without a mask. While the official Formula 1 season suffered and still suffers from the coronavirus pandemic, racing fans will have to accept virtually no restrictions with the game. Codemasters offers gamers the real deal with F1 2020. We took a closer look at the hardware requirements.

Technology

After the dusty graphics of the F1 Series was criticized many times, F1 2020 is visually up to date. In addition to the detailed vehicles, the (formerly quite sterile) routes can finally convince. So now you can discover significantly more decorative objects, which in combination with the spectators and the race marshals etc. create a harmonious atmosphere. There is also little to complain about when it comes to the textures, although of course there is still some room for improvement. We particularly liked the weather system. In the rain you want to literally clear the screen of drops.

If you exclude the fact that some settings require a restart (fortunately the intro videos can be skipped), the graphics settings also deserve praise. Because of the sheer amount, Codemasters has divided the options into two menus - as with its predecessors. While the video tab takes care of things like resolution (optionally dynamic), VSync, anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering and HDR, various quality settings are waiting in the advanced tab. If desired, these can be conveniently controlled using a preset.

However, we would recommend that the developers revise the general menu structure. To reach some functions, an unnecessarily large number of clicks are necessary. Other racing games like Dirt Rally 2.0 and Grid prove that Codemasters can do better.

F1 2020 ran very stable in the test without a single crash. Only when using non-native resolutions did the title mess about (only window mode possible). A restart often helped here. Positive: With a download size of around 26 GB, F1 2020 takes up very little space for a current game.

As you can see in the pictures below, the graphics are sufficiently sharp and detailed from medium details. A further increase in the settings has hardly any visual impact.

Benchmark

Like F1 2019 and F1 2018, there is a special benchmark menu that allows many adjustments. So not only can you choose the route, but also the weather, the camera mode and the number of laps. An FPS counter and a loop function are also nice to have. At the end of the benchmark, a relatively extensive evaluation with minimum, average and maximum FPS and the frame times appears (see screenshot).

Our measurements were all carried out on the Australia course in dry weather and with variable camera angles.

Results

FHD (1920x1080)

F1 2020 inherits the low system hunger and CPU load of its predecessor versions (particularly easy to recognize with low resolutions and settings). Although we are using DirectX 12 instead of DirectX 11 mode this year, the performance is very much based on F1 2019.

A low-end GPU on the level of a GeForce MX350 is sufficient to play the title at 1920x1080 and medium details. A midrange representative is only necessary at higher quality levels. The "High" preset runs smoothly from a GeForce GTX 1050 (Ti), and the "Ultra High" preset from a GeForce GTX 1650

Growing up with MS-DOS and Windows 3.1 in the early 90s, I discovered my interest in computers in my childhood. Especially computer games radiated a great fascination for me even then. From Monkey Island to Lands of Lore to Doom, everything was gambled that you could get your hands on. I have been working for Notebookcheck since 2009 with focus on high-performance gaming notebooks.

Because of my interest in computer games I started studying computer science, became a psychologist, but stayed true to the games and the hardware. For example during my year abroad in London as a games tester at Sega. In my spare time I find a balance between PC games and sports (meanwhile mainly indoor soccer and running after my toddler), playing guitar and building bamboo bikes (well, so far only one under guidance).
