Mafia Definitive Edition Notebook and Desktop Benchmarks
Technology
To get straight to the point: Apart from some minor details, the Definitive Edition of Mafia I is a surprisingly good remake. Its style is very much based on the original and therefore transfers the flair of the 1930s. Thanks to its detailed world and the story focus, developer Hangar 13 creates a dense atmosphere that other studios should take as an example for their own (open world) action games. In every corner of the virtual world you can observe the devotion and effort the developers used to create the environments. For example, there are lots of passers-by and vehicles on the streets, which sometimes react credibly and sometimes amusingly to the player's influences.
Even if the graphics don't reach reference level, the title leaves a very good visual impression. For example, there are lovingly designed cars, the chic lighting, the well-made effects (smoke, sparks, etc.) or the numerous reflections. A further advantage is the physics system with its destructible level elements, from which especially car rides benefit. Speaking of cars: We also liked the driving model - in contrast to other action competitors such as Watch Dogs.
The same applies to the graphics menu, which - like the other menus - is very tidy and offers close to 20 options. In the upper area, you can adjust the resolution, the picture mode, the field of view and the brightness, whereas the lower area contains several detailed settings, which can be adjusted globally via quality presets.
As can be seen in the screenshots above, the presets have hardly any visual effect and the same applies to the performance. Positive: Changes in the settings don't require a restart (there is a graphics menu outside the game that is somewhat limited and uncomfortable). In general, the engine leaves a stable and well-optimized impression.
Benchmarks
We use the Free Ride mode, which is accessible or can be unlocked shortly after the start of the campaign. Our benchmark consists of a car ride for 30 seconds. From the starting point we go into the garage to organize a (rather lame) Bolt Ace, with which we line up on the main street and speed up as straight as possible. To capture the frame rate we use the tool CapFrameX. The exact sequence can be viewed in the video below.
Since Mafia is played in third-person perspective and does not require extremely fast reaction times in most situations, 35 fps upwards should be sufficient for decent gameplay.

FHD (1920x1080)
While entry-level GPUs can only handle minimal settings and resolutions below FHD, current mid-range graphics cards, such as the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, can handle at least 1920x1080 pixels and the medium preset.

UHD (3840x2160)
For 4K gaming you will need a real high-end chip. For a mixture of 3840x2160 pixels and maximum settings, you should own at least a GeForce RTX 2070.

Since gaming tests are very time intensive and often hindered by installation or activation limits, we can only provide a portion of the benchmarks at the time of publishing. Further graphics cards will be added in the coming days and weeks.
