Like its predecessors (Far Cry 4, Far Cry Primal, etc.) the latest release in the series uses the Dunia Engine, which was originally based on the CryEngine. This still does a good job in 2018, although the rather subtle improvements no longer inspire rave reviews.
Compared to other ego shooters from the past 1-2 years such as Star Wars Battlefront 2 and Wolfenstein 2, the textures in Far Cry 5 do not appear particularly sharp. However, the game scores several points for its smart lighting and great draw distance. Overall, it is very atmospheric and sets the scene nicely - at least at the beginning.

We must congratulate the developers for their broad and nice-looking graphics menu that is strongly reminiscent of the Ubisoft siblings Assassin's Creed Origins and Ghost Recon Wildlands. The neatly-organized tabs offer exactly the right amount of options that are well explained in text or sometimes through symbols.
The competition would do well from copying the included video memory usage meter. The actual VRAM usage is fine. A mixture of 1920x1080 pixels and the Ultra preset requires about 2.7 GB and even 3840x2160 pixels only just reaches 4 GB. Great news: Far Cry 5 can implement all changes to the settings without a restart, which encourages experimenting and saves users from long, patience-testing waiting times.

Gamers who prefer jumping right in and do not want to spend time adjusting the settings can use one of the presets. In fact, the game automatically tries to adjust its settings to the performance capacities of the graphics card when it is first started. This works surprisingly well on most systems. However, we should mention that without a magnifying glass, you will find hardly any noticeable differences between the various levels of detail - both visually and when looking at the frame rate.
Thanks to the game engine, which has been improved over the course of several years, the title runs very smoothly. We did not encounter any crashes or major hiccups in the graphics department during our tests. By the way, Far Cry 5 does not take up that much space for a game produced in 2018. A download of 24 GB (27 GB on the storage device) seems moderate considering the size of the current gaming giant Final Fantasy XV (more than 140 GB including hi-res texture pack).
Benchmark
Although Ubisoft's download platform UPlay still cannot keep up with the main competitor from Valve (Steam offers significantly more variety and features), there is one thing that we would like to highlight: Almost all the publisher's triple-A titles offer an integrated benchmark - from For Honor and The Division to Rainbow Six Siege. Far Cry 5 is no exception. The 60-second test, which is characterized by a fast tracking shot, checks the system's performance capacity.
The changes in frame rate are displayed on a graph, and the minimum, average and maximum FPS are also highlighted. Based on our experience, the benchmark performance is very similar to the "real" gameplay, so these results should be quite realistic. In order to play Far Cry 5 properly, your device should manage at least 40 FPS, but the game requires an average score of about 60 FPS to be displayed really smoothly. This is the same with most other first-person shooters.
Results
Although Far Cry 5 does not consume too many resources, the title still requires a certain amount of computing power, particularly from the graphics card. Unfortunately, the HD Graphics chips that are integrated into the Intel CPUs are overwhelmed at all settings and cannot even display 1280x720 pixels at a Low preset. You will need a GeForce MX150 at the very least to display the game at these settings.
Mid-range models will allow the game to be displayed in Full HD. 1920x1080 pixels and the Medium preset requires at least a GeForce GTX 1050. Only real gaming GPUs such as the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti or the slightly older GeForce GTX 970M can manage high and maximum details.
Owners of notebooks/desktop PCs with (W)QHD/4K displays will not get around using high-end graphics chips. To display the game at 2560x1440 pixels, we would recommend at least a GeForce GTX 1060 or GTX 980. 3840x2160 pixels at the Ultra preset even requires a GeForce GTX 1080.
