Monster Hunter World Notebook and Desktop Benchmarks

Hardware Torture. While Monster Hunter World receives mostly praise from the press, the action role-playing title fares in parts significantly worse with gamers. Find out in our benchmark test whether the PC port was really unsuccessful or whether the gaming community is exaggerating.
Monster Hunter World

Technology

In contrast to Resident Evil 7, which also comes from Capcom and is based on the modern RE engine, Monster Hunter World has to be content with the slightly aged MT Framework graphics engine. Despite various improvements, the age of the engine has become noticeable at this point. The main problem is the texture quality, in our opinion. Even at the highest settings, many object surfaces appear muddy.

On the other hand, Monster Hunter World scores with unique design art, expansive environments, an atmospheric day-night shift, and ample distance viewing that results in great panoramic views. The game atmosphere also profits from the successful and first-rate production of the intro. Taking all these aspects together, we would consider the looks of Monster Hunter World to be decent, even though the hardware requirements do not quite correspond to the offered graphics quality.

In our experience, it is quite justified that the PC port receives some complaints from the gaming community even beyond the graphics and its resource hunger. The problems begin with the control, which feels extremely spongy (keyword: mouse pointer) and reach up to the menus, where you can really see the console origin because they look so antiquated and are not really arranged sensibly from a PC point of view, as well as not being well-suited for mouse and keyboard operation.

The developers could also improve on the system of progression, since you are not allowed to save during missions and expeditions, and the game continues without pausing while opening menus. At least we have to give credit to Monster Hunter World for running stably (no crashes at all during our test runs) and being surprisingly compact in terms of storage space for a 2018 game. The steam download is barely 17 GB. The load times are also pleasantly short – at least on an SSD.

The graphics settings leave us with mixed feelings. On the positive side, we have the practical presets that are implemented directly and enable fast adjustment of the overall quality. Be careful, however: With the exception of the maximum level, Monster Hunter World uses upscaling in some circumstances in order to increase the performance. Those wanting to game in the maximum resolution have to make sure that the Image Quality option, which is unfortunately missing an exact explanation, is set to High. Low, Medium, and Variable may decrease the image sharpness noticeably.  You also have to be similarly careful with the Volume Rendering Quality and LOD Bias options in some presets, due to the Variable setting. For our benchmarks, we adjusted these Settings accordingly.

Starting from medium details, the gaming world of Monster Hunter World will begin to be effective, but you should not expect too much even in the two highest levels. It's only in minimal settings that the game doesn't look very pretty. Without edge smoothing (FXAA and TAA are supported), various objects flicker strongly. It is unfortunate that you can only adjust a few settings from inside the game, requiring you to visit the main menu instead. Even more annoying is that Monster Hunter World must be completely restarted in order to change the resolution. The vertical synchronization and the optional FPS limit can only make up for this to a limited extent.

Benchmark

As benchmark sequence we use an almost 30-second run through the Astera settlement, which the gamer reaches shortly after the tutorial and which contains numerous buildings and people. You can see the exact route in the video below.

HD (1280x720)

For the action RPG to run smoothly, the PC or laptop should offer a dedicated graphics chip. Processor GPUs such as the widely spread HD Graphics 630 already appear extremely overtaxed at 1280x720 pixels and minimum details. In these settings you only get playable frame rates starting from a GeForce 940M.

FHD (1920x1080)

On a Full HD display, you need considerably more graphics power. For the Medium preset, it has to be at least a GeForce GTX 970M, and the High preset screams for a GeForce GTX 980M or better. Those who want to play at full details will only begin to be happy with at least a GeForce GTX 1060.

QHD (2560x1440) and UHD (3840x2160)

In the QHD range, you cannot get around without a current high-end model. A combination of 2560x1440 pixels and the highest preset can only be handled at more than 40 FPS by a GeForce GTX 1070. There is currently no notebook GPU that is able to power 3840x2160 pixels smoothly. Even the GeForce GTX 1080 remains below the 30-FPS mark when using the maximum settings.

Legend
5Stutters – This game is very likely to stutter and have poor frame rates. Based on all known benchmarks using the specified graphical settings, average frame rates are expected to fall below 25fps
May Stutter – This graphics card has not been explicitly tested on this game. Based on interpolated information from surrounding graphics cards of similar performance levels, stutters and poor frame rates are expected.
30Fluent – Based on all known benchmarks using the specified graphical settings, this game should run at or above 25fps
40Fluent – Based on all known benchmarks using the specified graphical settings, this game should run at or above 35fps
60Fluent – Based on all known benchmarks using the specified graphical settings, this game should run at or above 58fps
May Run Fluently – This graphics card has not been explicitly tested on this game. Based on interpolated information from surrounding graphics cards of similar performance levels, fluent frame rates are expected.
?Uncertain – This graphics card experienced unexpected performance issues during testing for this game. A slower card may be able to achieve better and more consistent frame rates than this particular GPU running the same benchmark scene.
Uncertain – This graphics card has not been explicitly tested on this game and no reliable interpolation can be made based on the performances of surrounding cards of the same class or family.
The value in the fields displays the average frame rate of all values in the database. Move your cursor over the value to see individual results.
