Apex Legends Laptop and Desktop Benchmarks

Through the roof. In a very short time the free-to-play game Apex Legends has attracted millions of players - a good reason for us to have a look at the first-person shooter and put its system requirements under the magnifying glass.
Apex Legends

Technical

Those who thought that the battle-royale market was saturated, what with PUBG, Fortnite and Call of Duty 4: Black Ops, were quickly disabused of that notion in early February 2019. Apex Legends, from the makers of Titanfall - Respawn Entertainment, has been so successful that it has managed to overshadow the releases of highly anticipated games such as Metro: Exodus.

The level of hype achieved by this game surprised us too. At first glance, it appears to be just "another" multiplayer first-person shooter that has a highly colourful style that is not dissimilar to other games in the genre such as Borderlands and Overwatch. As Fortnite managed to do in 2018, Apex Legends marries familiar elements with its own individual flair in order to achieve a well-rounded package which, despite a bit of a learning curve due to content and gameplay (multiple classes with different skills), is very approachable and quickly becomes familiar.

One reason for the positive first impression is the well thought-out control scheme. Due to its combination of smooth movement (reminiscent of id Software's games) and the clear animations, Apex Legends feels very fast and full of action. The satisfying weapon feedback in terms of sound also adds to the atmosphere.

Graphically it is above-average for a free-to-play title, but of course it cannot be compared to giants of the genre such as Battlefield V - the textures are not sharp enough. However, it gets plus points for its long draw distance.

Players will be happy to see a comprehensive video-settings menu that is logically laid out with short explanations of each individual setting. As is typical with most FPS games, it is possible alongside the usual aspect ratio and image options to change the resolution as well as field of view (plus there is an optional colour-blind mode).

You can go even deeper into detail in the advanced options. Whilst the options for V-Sync and "adaptive resolution target" were disabled for our tests, we modified all other settings for the different graphical detail levels. Due to indicators under each option you can see straight away where in the range your selected level for the option is. The fact that settings are also immediately applied and don't require a restart also earns praise.

Apex Legends

In terms of criticism, we'd only like to see predefined presets to set the overall graphics quality with a single click. It's also somewhat disappointing that the VRAM requirement as per "Texture Streaming Budget" doesn't deliver, as whilst one would expect 8 GB of VRAM to be used, in reality it is much less and the game is not heavy on VRAM. The system requirements can be described overall as "moderate".

Otherwise, the game left a good first impression technically. Apart from a few incidents with connection problems ("Server out of sync") we didn't experience any significant issues or crashes during our testing. The loading times were also acceptable. The same goes for the install size - about 20 GB is reasonably small for a 2019 title.

Benchmark

Due to the fact that battle-royale games don't allow running performance measurements, we did our testing in the training mission. This results in a frame rate somewhat higher than in the "actual" game but - from what we were able to determine - not excessively so. Because this is a game with fast gameplay, and a first-person shooter, the ideal minimum FPS is 60. Someone playing casually may be able to tolerate frame rates around 40 FPS if necessary. More than 144 FPS is not possible due to a built-in frame-rate limiter.

HD (1280x720)

Whilst notebooks with integrated GPUs such as the Intel HD Graphics 630 will tend to be overwhelmed, dedicated low-end GPUs on the level of the GeForce MX130 with minimum settings and 1280x720 will be playable.

FHD (1920x1080)

Moving up to 1920x1080, we recommend a GPU from the mid-range options. Medium details are playable from a GeForce GTX 1050 upwards and high to maximum settings starting from a GeForce GTX 1050 Ti.

QHD (2560x1440) & UHD (3840x2160)

Those with QHD displays will need a high-end GPU under the hood. At a resolution of 2560x1440 with full details we recommend a minimum of a GeForce GTX 1060. However, UHD displays with 3840x2160 will demand more and a GeForce GTX 1080 or better will be needed here.

Note

Due to the fact that gaming tests are very time intensive and also sometimes hindered by installation and activation limits, we're only able to provide a portion of the benchmarks at the time of publishing this article. Further graphics cards will be tested in the coming days and weeks.

Legend
5Stutters – This game is very likely to stutter and have poor frame rates. Based on all known benchmarks using the specified graphical settings, average frame rates are expected to fall below 25fps
May Stutter – This graphics card has not been explicitly tested on this game. Based on interpolated information from surrounding graphics cards of similar performance levels, stutters and poor frame rates are expected.
30Fluent – Based on all known benchmarks using the specified graphical settings, this game should run at or above 25fps
40Fluent – Based on all known benchmarks using the specified graphical settings, this game should run at or above 35fps
60Fluent – Based on all known benchmarks using the specified graphical settings, this game should run at or above 58fps
May Run Fluently – This graphics card has not been explicitly tested on this game. Based on interpolated information from surrounding graphics cards of similar performance levels, fluent frame rates are expected.
?Uncertain – This graphics card experienced unexpected performance issues during testing for this game. A slower card may be able to achieve better and more consistent frame rates than this particular GPU running the same benchmark scene.
Uncertain – This graphics card has not been explicitly tested on this game and no reliable interpolation can be made based on the performances of surrounding cards of the same class or family.
The value in the fields displays the average frame rate of all values in the database. Move your cursor over the value to see individual results.
