Cyberpunk 2077 1.5 in test: Notebook and desktop benchmarks

Now with integrated benchmark, but still very demanding. More than a year after the official PC release, a comprehensive update for Cyberpunk 2077 is here with patch 1.5. Let's analyze the graphics requirements and performance of the game again.

Technology

Apart from a few new features (e.g. ray-traced local shadows), hardly anything has changed graphically compared to previous patches. But that's not necessary because even more than a year after release Cyberpunk 2077 is still one of the most beautiful games on the PC.

The stability and optimization of the title are more of a problem. Even with patch 1.5, we had crashes here and there during the test. In addition, there were strange jerks on some systems that could sometimes (but not always) be solved by restarting the game. For example, Cyberpunk 2077 did not run smoothly on our RTX 3080 notebook, which is why we only entered the ray-tracing results.

There are still bugs in the options menu. For example, certain settings (including texture quality and DLSS) were not changed correctly on some test systems after switching. In this case, deleting the Cyberpunk files in the Windows "Saved games" folder often helped. Apart from that, the graphics menu is mostly pleasing. As we already know before patch 1.5, there are a lot of settings in the Video and especially Graphics tabs, which are usually applied directly. Cyberpunk 2077 now occupies around 64 GB on the hard drive. Especially nice: If you want, you can download the game DRM-free from gog.com and install or play it offline.

Benchmark

In our opinion, the biggest highlight of patch 1.5 is the added benchmark. While we had to use a separate benchmark scene in the original Cyberpunk 2077, performance measurements are now very comfortable. In the roughly one-minute sequence, the benchmark presents a fancy tracking shot that includes both indoor and outdoor areas with various characters (see video). After the measurement, which only shows the frames per second, a more detailed evaluation including minimum, average, and maximum FPS appears.

Results

For the benchmarks, we mainly use rental devices from our partners at XMG (Schenker Technologies) and MSI are used.

FHD (1,920 x 1,080)

Although the GPU hunger has improved a bit since the release, Cyberpunk 2077 turns out to be quite computationally intensive even with patch 1.5. Entry-level chips like the Intel Iris Xe are too weak for the RPG even when using minimum options. It has to be a graphics card from the lower mid-range in Full HD (GeForce GTX 1650 upwards) for the Low and Medium presets to run reasonably smoothly (40 FPS+). Meanwhile, the presets High and Ultra require a representative from the upper midrange, such as the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti or the RTX 3050 Ti.

QHD (2,560 x 1,440)

A high-end accelerator should be under the hood for QHD displays - at least when using higher details. 2,560 x 1,440 pixels and the Ultra-Preset are only available starting from a GeForce RTX 3070.

UHD (3,840 x 2,160)

Even the strongest notebook and desktop models reach their limits in the 4K range. 3,840 x 2,160 pixels in combination with the Ultra Preset could only be handled by the GeForce RTX 3080 and the RTX 3090 decently.

Ray Tracing

It looks similarly steep or even worse when ray tracing is enabled. Only a few GPUs can achieve more than 40 FPS in Full HD, provided that the Ray Tracing Ultra preset is selected. You can currently forget about a combination of UHD and Ray Tracing Ultra without DLSS on all available graphics cards.
