NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 Mobile vs Intel Iris Xe Graphics G7 96EUs vs NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Mobile

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 Mobile

► remove from comparison

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 for laptops is a fast mid-range gaming graphics card for laptops. It is based on the desktop RTX 2060 chip but at reduced GPU clock rates (-30%) and reduces power consumption (80 - 90 Watt TGP versus 160 Watt for the desktop version).

In 2020 Nvidia also released a refreshed version with the same name. It is based on the TU106B chip and offers new voltage regulators and controllers. Furthermore, the maximum TGP was increased to 115 Watt and therefore the GPU can clock higher (1005 - 1560 MHz). The memory speed however was decreased to 11 Gbps leading to a slightly better overall performance compared to the old version.

NVIDIA manufacturers the Turing TU106 chip on a 12 nm FinFET process and includes features like Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) and Real-Time Ray Tracing (RTRT), which should combine to create more realistic lighting effects than older GPUs based on the company's Pascal architecture (if the games supports it). The RTX 2060 is also DisplayPort 1.4 ready, while there is also support for HDMI 2.0b, HDR, Simultaneous Multi-Projection (SMP) and H.265 video en/decoding (PlayReady 3.0).

The gaming performance of the mobile RTX 2060 is similar to an old Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 (Desktop) and clearly behind the desktop RTX 2060. The mobile GTX 1660 Ti is only a few percent behind in our gaming benhcmarks, but offers no raytracing features built in the GPU. For demanding games of 2019, the RTX 2060 is most suited for full HD (1080p) and high / ultra settings. However, there is not much headroom to activate the taxing raytracing features in most games.

The power consumption is rated at 80 - 90 Watt TGP by Nvidia and therefore similar to the Max-Q variants of the RTX 2070 and RTX 2080. In our real world laptop-tests the power draw of the whole systems running The Witcher 3 shows that the RTX 2060 slots in slightly below the Max-Q Variants and slightly above the GTX 1660 Ti mobile (as expected).

Intel Iris Xe Graphics G7 96EUs

► remove from comparison Intel Iris Xe G7 96EUs

The Intel Xe Graphics G7 (Tiger-Lake U GPU with 96 EUs) is a integrated graphics card in the high end Tiger-Lake U CPUs (15 - 28 Watt). It is using the new Xe architecture (Gen12) and was introduced in September 2020. The GPU clocks with a base clock speed (guaranteed) of 400 MHz in all CPUs and can boost up to 1340 MHz (i7-1185G7). The slowest variant offers only 1100 MHz boost (i5-1130G7, 12 Watt TDP).

The performance depends on the TDP settings of the laptop and the used cooling. First informations show that the chip can be configured at 12 and 28 Watt TDP default (as the Ice Lake-U chips) and the performance should be around a dedicated GeForce MX350 in 3DMark benchmarks. For gaming we are expecting a bit worse performance due to the missing dedicated graphics memory and driver support. Many games e.g. had problems when testing the various laptops (e.g. Horizon Zero Dawn or Cyberpunk 2077 did not start or were crashing - see list below). Less demanding games like the Mass Effect Legendary Edition ran in medium settings fine. Compared to the older Ice Lake Iris Plus G7 GPU, the new Tiger Lake GPU should be approximately twice as fast. Therefore, the iGPU is still only for lowest graphical settings and low resolutions in demanding games.

The Tiger Lake SoCs and therefore the integrated GPU are manufactured in the modern 10nm+ (10nm SuperFin) process (improved 10nm process) at Intel and therefore should offer a very good efficiency.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Mobile

► remove from comparison

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 for laptops is the second fastest mobile graphics card for notebooks in early 2019. It is based on the desktop RTX 2070 but with reduced core speeds (-11% Boost, -14% Base). The memory appears to be similar clocked and sized. Therefore, the RTX2070 offers 2,304 shaders and 8 GB GDDR6 memory connected by a 256 bit interface (14 GHz, 448 GB/s).

A more power efficient "Max-Q" version is also available with further reduced clock rates.

In April 2020 Nvidia refreshed the RTX 2070 with new "Super" cards. In addition to the RTX 2070 Super Mobile with 2560 shaders, Nvidia also introduced a slightly higher clocked RTX 2070 for laptops (N18E-G1R-A1, TU106-735-A1 chip) with a 1,305 base and 1,485 MHz boost clock.

Features

NVIDIA manufacturers the TU106 chip on a 12 nm FinFET process and includes features like Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) and Real-Time Ray Tracing (RTRT), which should combine to create more realistic lighting effects than older GPUs based on the company's Pascal architecture (if the games supports it). The RTX 2070 is also DisplayPort 1.4 ready, while there is also support for HDMI 2.0b, HDR, Simultaneous Multi-Projection (SMP) and H.265 video en/decoding (PlayReady 3.0).

Performance

The mobile RTX 2070 should perform a bit slower than the desktop RTX 2070 and therefore on par the old GTX 1080 for laptops. Therefore, it should be able to run all demanding games in 4k with high details. Raytracing features however may reduce framerates a lot.
