The Asus ExpertBook P1 with the Intel Core i7-13700H promises powerful performance for demanding everyday work. But how does it perform in practice? Is the ExpertBook P1 a good choice for price-conscious business users and students? In our test, we examined its strengths and weaknesses to find out whether Asus has managed to deliver a good total package.Sebastian Bade, 👁 Sebastian Bade (translated by Daisy Dickson) Published 🇩🇪 🇫🇷 ...
Verdict - Work device at a fair price
The Asus ExpertBook P1 is a solid entry-level laptop that is particularly suitable for office applications, web browsing and simple multimedia use. With its slim design and good energy efficiency, it offers reliable performance for everyday use. This is exactly what the device proved during our test, even if its Intel Core i7-13700H couldn't exploit its full potential due to the laptop's small cooling unit and lowered TDP.
Asus has shot itself in the foot a bit when it comes to the laptop's features, giving away some performance due to its single RAM module. Its connectivity options are simple, without standing out from the broad mass of office laptops. However, its support option, which keeps the user up to date via the MyAsus software, is good. Its three performance modes can also be conveniently selected via a key combination.
The Asus ExpertBook P1's display fits well when we consider its price. For professional use, however, the panel lacks some essential points, such as sufficient color space coverage. On the other hand, the ExpertBook P1 scores with its many different options for restricting access to third parties.

The Asus ExpertBook P1 is an inexpensive business laptop that still offers plenty of computing power based on an Intel Core i7-13700H. Asus advertizes its office laptop as a reliable solution for productive work—whether in the office, working from home, or on the go.
The device costs less than $900, which is a good offer. But you'll have to take into account a few compromises.
Specifications
Case & connectivity - Solid standard
The Asus ExpertBook P1 has a simple, functional design that is intended for business use. Its case is made of high-quality plastic with a matte surface that reduces fingerprint marks. Despite the lightweight material, the laptop has a solid finish and good stability. The hinge allows a generous opening angle of up to 180 degrees.
You can generally carry out maintenance on the Asus ExpertBook P1, but you shouldn't try to open it without using special tools. Although only four screws need to be loosened to remove the base plate, it is very firmly attached to the case thanks to numerous plastic clips. There is also another bracket in the middle, which initially suggests the use of another screw. The edges must first be loosened and then the underside separated from the base with a gentle tug. You should be extremely careful not to break off the small holders.
Security features haven't been neglected by Asus—even on this budget laptop. In addition to the device featuring a fingerprint scanner, the Asus ExpertBook P1's webcam also has manual privacy protection and other options to protect the system against unauthorized access.

Sustainability
Asus hasn't provided any specific information on the CO2 footprint of the ExpertBook P1's production. Its packaging is mainly made of cardboard, but also contains plastic materials that are used to protect the laptop and the power supply unit. According to Asus, the Asus ExpertBook P1 uses 26.1 percent sustainable materials.
Input devices - Needs getting used to and without backlighting
The Asus ExpertBook P1 is equipped with a comfortable keyboard with good key travel and a precise pressure point—ideal for longer typing sessions. Its layout is clearly arranged, including a separate numeric keypad for productive work. However, it takes some getting used to if you frequently use the arrow keys. Backlighting is missing on some models, which may be a disadvantage in poor lighting conditions.
Its touchpad is generously sized and responds precisely to inputs. Multi-touch gestures are reliably recognized, which makes operation easier. An integrated fingerprint scanner reduces its usable surface a little. Subjectively, however, this didn't limit us too much during our everyday testing. Overall, the ExpertBook P1's input devices are comfortable and efficient during everyday work.
Display - Simple IPS display
The installed IPS display is a 15.6-inch panel with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. Still, you shouldn't place high demands on the screen. It at least achieves the specified brightness, although its illumination is by no means perfect. In combination with its black level, this results in an adequate contrast ratio. Alternatively, the Asus ExpertBook P1 can also be equipped with a slightly less bright TN panel. Its maximum brightness is then only 250 cd/m². Even so, you should opt for the device with an IPS display if you can, as its viewing angle stability and better brightness are clear plusses. Backlight bleeding becomes slightly visible when the display is completely black, but this doesn't get in the way during everyday use. We were unable to detect PWM across all brightness levels, which is a positive aspect to emphasize.

Although the panel comes with weak color space coverage, it surprised us with relatively good Delta-E-2000 color deviations in the sRGB color space in its delivered state. Our calibration could improve this even further, as you can see from the screenshots. The corresponding ICC profile can be found above the comparison table.

Performance - Intel Core i7-13700H with throttled TDP
Asus has gone for an Intel Core i7-13700H processor in the top configuration of its ExpertBook P1. With 16 GB DDR5 RAM, you'll be well equipped for the time being—although a second module would provide a little more performance.
Testing conditions
We carried out all performance tests using the energy profile Balanced. There are three different power profiles to choose from, which can be set via the MyAsus software or using a key combination and don't require you to restart the device. The default setting is the Standard mode, which we used for all our tests.
Processor
The Asus ExpertBook P1 is fitted with the powerful Intel Core i7-13700H, a 13th-generation processor with 14 cores and 20 threads. Thanks to its clock frequency of up to 5.0 GHz, it offers strong performance for demanding applications such as multitasking, data processing and content creation. In theory, the SoC delivers a lot of performance, provided its power limit is not throttled too much.
In the Asus ExpertBook P1, the Intel Core i7-13700H can't even come close to the performance that we have documented on average with other devices so far. Its combination of performance and efficiency cores ensures a good balance between performance and energy consumption. The limitation of its power consumption under continuous load to only 45 watts doesn't leave much room for more performance. In Performance mode, its power consumption is increased to up to 50 watts, but this doesn't lead to a noticeable difference. There are no differences between the performance profiles when it comes to their short-term power limits.

System performance
Subjectively, the Asus ExpertBook P1 delivers good system performance during everyday use. With regards to the benchmarks, however, our test system only achieved a midfield ranking. Its low power consumption and the fact that only one RAM module (single-channel operation) is installed ultimately resulted in no more points being achieved in the individual tests. A second DDR5 RAM module can be easily retrofitted and should definitely be considered.

Storage device
Asus equips its ExpertBook P1 with an SSD with 512 GB of storage space. The model from Western Digital delivered good results during our test, and the SSD didn't suffer any loss of performance in the stress test either. There is another M.2-2230 slot inside the device, which lets you install an additional data carrier. The pre-installed mass storage uses the M.2-2280 interface.

Emissions & power - Three modes for more flexibility
Noise emissions
The Asus ExpertBook P1 stays mostly quiet when idling and performing simple tasks, but it can get noticeable under load due to how audible the fan noise is. It produces a consistent, high-frequency sound that can be heard in quiet environments. Overall, however, the laptop remains a bit quieter than its competitors. If the device is operated in Whisper mode, its maximum noise level is reduced to 28.3 dB(A). In Performance mode, the fan generates a significantly higher noise level of up to 46.7 dB(A).

Temperature
The Asus ExpertBook P1 stays nice and cool during regular use, especially when carrying out simple office tasks or browsing the web. Under load, the temperature rises noticeably, with the area above the keyboard and the underside in particular becoming warmer. Heat is dissipated mainly via a fan, which supplies the relatively long heat pipe with fresh air. The processor itself briefly reached 91 °C during our test, which is within Intel's technical specifications.
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 42.3 °C / 108 F, compared to the average of 34.3 °C / 94 F, ranging from 21.2 to 62.5 °C for the class Office.
(±) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 44.8 °C / 113 F, compared to the average of 36.8 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 28.4 °C / 83 F, compared to the device average of 29.5 °C / 85 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 28.7 °C / 83.7 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(±) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 27.6 °C / 81.7 F (-1.1 °C / -2 F).

The Asus ExpertBook P1's speakers deliver solid sound quality for everyday applications such as video conferencing and media playback. The sound is clear, but rather treble-heavy and offers little bass, which makes music and movies sound less powerful. Their maximum volume is sufficient for small to medium-sized rooms. For a better sound experience, we recommend using external speakers or headphones.
