Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5-15 laptop review - Great value for money with an AMD SoC and an aluminum case
How much laptop do you really need?
Lenovo's IdeaPad Slim 5-15 is an affordable everyday laptop. For just over $600, buyers get an attractive aluminum case, an AMD SoC, a matte IPS display, and super long runtimes.Andreas Osthoff, 👁 Andreas Osthoff (translated by Daisy Dickson) Published 🇩🇪 🇫🇷 ...
Verdict - The IdeaPad impresses with a high-quality case and long runtimes
The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5 15 is an affordable everyday laptop that offers users a good total package. Its high-quality case and long battery life were particularly impressive during our test. Boasting a runtime of more than 14 hours in our WLAN test, the IdeaPad clearly set itself apart from its competitors and its matte IPS display features accurate colors as well as full sRGB coverage, making editing images no problem at all. Its brightness of 300 nits is sufficient for indoor use, but there will be some limitations outside.
The performance of the Ryzen 7 processor and the Radeon 680M GPU is perfectly fine and 16 GB of RAM should be enough for most everyday tasks. Unfortunately, the device's RAM can't be expanded, but you can install two M.2 2280 SSDs.
In addition to the soldered-on RAM, the somewhat high-frequency fan is one of the IdeaPad's weak points. It should also be noted that no operating system is pre-installed, which will in many cases result in additional costs. Even so, the IdeaPad Slim 5 15 is a great choice for just over $600, especially for students who have access to Windows via their university.

For this price, you get an aluminum case, an AMD Ryzen 7 7735HS, 16 GB RAM, a 512 GB SSD and a matte IPS display with full sRGB coverage. Specifications
Case & connectivity
Our first contact with the IdeaPad Slim 5 15 left us pleasantly surprised, as the design of the flat device reminds us somewhat of the Apple MacBook Air 15. Despite its low price, it uses aluminum (lid & base plate), but the palm rest is made of plastic. Its silver-colored surfaces are not particularly susceptible to fingerprints and its overall design looks super high-quality. We noted no problems with its stability or build quality—except the hinges can't entirely prevent the display from rocking ever so slightly. On the other hand, the lid can be opened easily with one hand and its maximum opening angle is around 170 degrees.
With a weight of just over 1.5 kg and a thickness of 15.6 mm, the IdeaPad is easy to transport. The bottom cover can be easily removed and there are two slots for M.2 2280 SSDs next to the WLAN module, so you can easily upgrade its storage capacity. The RAM (LPDDR5x-6400) is soldered on and cannot be expanded.
Its connectivity options include all the most important ports for everyday use, but you'll have to do without USB 4.0. The laptop's microSD card reader (no spring mechanism, cards stick out by 0.5 cm) achieves decent transfer rates, but its WLAN module (Wi-Fi 6 at 80 MHz) is limited to around 1 Gbit/s. The 1080p webcam fulfills its purpose and also features a cover and an IR module for facial recognition; Microsoft's Studio Effects are not supported.

Sustainability
Lenovo hasn't provided any information on the CO2 footprint produced during the laptop's production, but 0.5 tons of CO2 is offset. The device also fulfills various environmental certifications (Energy Star 8.0, EPEAT Gold). The packaging is made entirely from recyclable materials and 50% recycled aluminum is used for the laptop itself. Lenovo has provided a maintenance/repair manual.
Input devices - Backlit keyboard
The IdeaPad Slim 5 15 is fitted with a backlit keyboard that can be activated automatically in dark lighting conditions. The light gray keyboard with white lettering is very easy to see and its layout is clear. The keys' travel is 1.3 mm and overall, they feel good to type on, but the keyboards of more expensive Lenovo laptops are better. The ClickPad (13 x 8.5 cm) is nice and smooth to operate, but the mechanical clicks in the lower area are loud and feel a little cheap.
Display - IPS with 100% sRGB coverage
Our test device has a matte IPS panel with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 pixels (16:10) and a 60 Hz refresh rate. Of course, its subjective picture quality can't keep up with OLED panels and displays with a higher frequency show smoother movements, but the laptop's picture is still decent and even bright surfaces only appear minimally grainy (which is only visible at a very close distance). No PWM is used and its response times are fine, although some slight backlight bleeding can be seen along the edges of dark content. Its viewing angle stability is good.
Its brightness is stated to be 300 nits and our test device achieved this at all measuring points. Its contrast ratio benefits from its low black level, and the screen's brightness is sufficient for indoor use in combination with the matte surface. Outside, on the other hand, things may get a little problematic. We analyzed the panel using the professional CalMAN software and the factory profile showed a slight color cast (green/blue), but the color deviations were small. Our calibrated profile (available to download for free in the box on the right) improves the display, but also reduces its maximum brightness by around 25 cd/m². Together with its full sRGB coverage, the panel is also suitable for editing images/videos.

Processor
The AMD Ryzen 7 7735HS features 8 cores (Zen3+) with 16 threads and a maximum clock speed of 4.75 GHz. The processor is of course no longer brand new, but its multi-core performance in particular is still good, coming ahead of the comparison devices. To provide a better comparison, we have also included the Dell XPS 13 with its current Lunar Lake processor Core Ultra 7 256V, which was slower in multi-core tests, but had a head start in the single-core tests. All in all, however, the performance of the 7735HS is perfectly adequate for everyday tasks. Its performance also stays stable both under prolonged load and in battery mode. Further CPU benchmarks are available in our tech section.

System performance
Despite its low price, the IdeaPad is a responsive device during everyday use, which is of course in part due to the installed SSD. Its benchmark results were decent and there were no problems with system stability during the test.

Storage device
A 512 GB PCIe 4.0 SSD from Western Digital is installed in our test device, which managed very good transfer rates during our test and delivers constant performance even under long-term load. It is an M.2-2242 SSD, but there are two M.2-2280 slots available (both PCIe 4.0 x4), so the laptop's storage capacity can be expanded very easily and cost-effectively if required. Further SSD benchmarks can be found here.

Graphics card
The Ryzen 7 7735HS is equipped with the integrated Radeon 680M GPU (RDNA2), which runs at a maximum of 2.4 GHz. The Radeon 680M is very well suited for everyday tasks, including playing back high-resolution videos, and the GPU's performance is additionally better than that of the comparison devices. You can also play games on the IdeaPad, but you'll have to limit yourself to older or less demanding titles. Current games such as Baldur's Gate 3 or Cyberpunk 2077 don't run smoothly. The GPU's performance remains stable both under constant load and in battery mode. Further graphics benchmarks are available in our tech section.

Emissions & energy
Noise emissions
The laptop's single fan copes well with the power limits of the Ryzen processor and it is generally a very quiet device during everyday use. We measured between 33-40 dB(A) when the SoC was put under a little more strain, which is acceptable. However, the fan noise is quite high-pitched, making it a little more annoying than the pure values would suggest. A solution with two fans would have been the better choice in this respect. However, you can limit the noise emissions to around 30 dB(A) using battery-saving mode, even under high load. No other electronic noises were coming from our test device.

Temperature
The case temperatures aren't a problem at all even under full load, and the surface temperatures always stay nice and pleasant. Even during the stress test, we didn't measure more than 38 °C at any point. The processor quickly stabilized at 30 watts and then remained stable at this level.
(+) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 38.1 °C / 101 F, compared to the average of 34.3 °C / 94 F, ranging from 21.2 to 62.5 °C for the class Office.
(+) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 36.6 °C / 98 F, compared to the average of 36.8 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 23.9 °C / 75 F, compared to the device average of 29.5 °C / 85 F.
(+) 3: The average temperature for the upper side is 29.9 °C / 86 F, compared to the average of 29.5 °C / 85 F for the class Office.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 27.2 °C / 81 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(±) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 27.6 °C / 81.7 F (+0.4 °C / 0.7 F).

Speakers
The two stereo speakers (2x 2 watts) get loud enough, but there isn't much bass at all. This makes music or videos in particular sound rather poor, but we noted no problems with voice reproduction (e.g. conferences). Within our comparison group and in view of the laptop's price, its results are still okay and there are certainly significantly worse sound systems on the market.

Power consumption
The laptop's consumption measurements are fine. Its idle values are low for a 15-inch device and we only measured a consumption of more than 60 watts for a few seconds at the start of load phases, after which it leveled off at around 50 watts. The supplied power supply (186 grams) is therefore perfectly adequate in size.

Runtimes
The combination of low power consumption and the 70 Wh battery enables significantly better runtimes than the direct competition. In the WLAN test at 150 cd/m² (corresponds to 72% of our test device's maximum brightness), the IdeaPad achieved just under 14.5 hours, and more than 11 hours at full brightness. One complete charging process with the device switched on takes 2 hours; 80% of its capacity is available again after just over an hour.
