The i9 7980XE CPU manages to keep a 30% lead against AMD’s Threadripper 1950X throughout synthetic and gaming benchmarks. The Intel CPU has 2 more cores that yield 4 more threads, so it's not really that surprising it performs better, but is the US1000 price difference really worth it?

Pimax 8K VR headsets coming in February 2018 for as low as US$449

The Kickstarter campaign initiated by Pimax raised the US$200,000 funding goal in less then 2 hours, so the company is now expected to ship the first models in February 2018. The 8K headset comes with dual 4K displays and can be pre-ordered for US$449, while the 5K version integrates dual 2560x1440 displays and costs US$349.

Scientists envision the optical computer - light and sound waves transformed into data

A group of researchers from the University of Sydney in Australia have developed a "photonic microchip" that converts light pulses into data, via sound waves. The chip does not produce any heat, it is immune to electromagnetic interference, and it's supposed to be 20 times faster than current CPUs.

The 16 extra cores found on Threadripper are "basically rocks"

A couple of days ago, de8auer posted a video showing the four dies in the Threadripper 1950X sanded down to reveal the silicon printing. This proved that the two "dummy dies" did contain proper Zen cores. Over the weekend a senior AMD staff member responded with what could be expected of the extra dies and why they were present.

AMD Ryzen 5 'Raven Ridge' APU benchmark shows major performance benefits over last gen 'Excavator'

Benchmark scores of the Zen-based AMD Ryzen 5 2500U APU are out on Geekbench and they seem promising. While the results seem to somewhat corroborate AMD's claims of a close to 50% performance increase over Bristol Ridge APUs, details are still scarce with respect to specifics of the on-die components.

Zotac adds GTX 1060/1070 GPUs and Ryzen CPUs to its Magnus gaming mini PC lineup

The Magnus EK51060 and EK51070 are both powered by Intel’s quad-core i5-7300HQ CPU and integrate the GTX 1060/1070 GPUs, respectively. AMD 35 W Bristol Ridge A-Series APUs now available

The 35 W APUs from AMD are available now, after more than a month of shortage. These low TDP APUs still retain the core count, stream processors and integrated GPUs from the 65 W models, but the CPU / GPU clocks were reduced. Prices range between US$58 and US$112.95.

AMD says Ryzen was "a worst case scenario," reveals details on Ryzen 2

Regarding the arguably low CPU frequencies, AMD states that Ryzen was a brand new architecture on a brand new node, making it a worst case scenario. But it still turned out well, since the Ryzen Threadrippers can go above 4 GHz. As for the upcoming Ryzen 2, AMD promises increased clocks, more instructions per cycle, and better game optimization.

AMD processor sales surpass Intel sales at Germany's largest online PC component retailer

Data collected from Germany's largest online PC component retailer shows that sales of Ryzen CPUs are now higher than Intel's core series, giving AMD the leading market share in the performance space. AMD also holds the leading market revenue, and has 60 percent of the top ten highest selling processor models.

AOC announces two new monitors in Agon 3 series with 0.5 ms response time

AOC is bringing a G-Sync monitor and a FreeSync 2 monitor to their Agon 3 series which both feature curved panels, high refresh rate up to 165 Hz, and response times as low as 0.5 ms. These 27-inch 1440p monitors are expected in Q2 2018.

Lenovo has announced the Legion Y520 Tower, Y720 Tower, and Y920 Tower gaming PC's which feature Kaby Lake processors and a choice of Pascal or Polaris graphics cards. Asus' new 27-inch monitor brings curves and 144 Hz refresh rate to PCs with mid-range GPUs

Pre-orders have started for the Asus ROG Strix XG27VQ, which combines a curved display, 144 Hz refresh rate, and a blue light filter with a FullHD resolution. The lower resolution means that users with mid-range graphics cards can use this screen without having to deal with blur from running at below native resolution.

Threadripper 1950X benchmarked at 5.2 GHz on all cores using liquid nitrogen

The AMD Threadripper 1950X has been successfully overclocked to 5.2 GHz on all 16-cores using LN2. This represents a 40.5 percent increase over the base turbo clock speed and gives a Cinebench R15 multi-core score of 4122.

Nvidia announces US$2.2 billion earnings for Q2 2018 fiscal year, due in part to cryptocurrency mining

Nvidia's earnings for Q2 2018 seem to have been boosted in part by the cryptominers who hog GPUs to increase the profitability of the Ethereum miners. Revenues for Nvidia are up 56% from Q2 2017, cumulating US$2.23.

Intel unveils the rest of the Core i9 X-series family

The top of the line 18-core / 36 thread i9-7980XE is priced at US$1,999, then follows the 16-core / 32-thread i9-7960X, priced at US$1,699. The 14-core / 28 threads i9-7940X is priced at US$1,399. These 3 CPUs will be launched on September 25, while the 12-core / 24-thread i9-7920X priced at US$1,199 will be released on August 28.
