Tested: Quiet AMD gaming notebook for €599 - HP Victus 15
The HP Victus 15-fb0354ng is a 15.6-inch budget gaming laptop that can be had for as low as €599 (around US$645) right now – with Windows included. Though you won’t find the latest hardware on board, the Ryzen 5 5600H and Radeon RX 6500M under the hood are still rather capable. We have taken a quick look at the device.
More information on the chassis, features and input devices can be found in our review of the identically built HP Victus 15-fa1057ng.
Ho-hum display and plastic chassis
HP doesn't use any high-quality material on the laptop: the entire chassis is made of matt plastic in “Mica Silver” – a sort of dark grey-anthracite-black shade. There’s nothing exceptional about its dimensions and weight. The laptop offers neither Thunderbolt 4 nor USB4, but the usual ports are present. The matt FHD display (60Hz) fails to impress; HP has given the Victus a screen (SVA) with poor viewing angle and low colour coverage. Windows 11 is included in the package, which isn't a matter of course in the budget market.
FHD gaming with AMD hardware
The Ryzen 5 5600H (Cezanne, 6 cores, 12 threads), Radeon RX 6500M (4 GB of GDDR6 RAM) and 8 GB of DDR4-3200 RAM (single-channel mode, two slots) form a largely well-rounded package. That said, 16 GB of RAM is recommended or even necessary for a gaming notebook. Dual-channel mode, which is required to make full use of the hardware, also can only be enabled if the laptop is fitted with a second memory module. It’s possible to pick up an 8 GB module right now for slightly less than €20 (US$21.50). The meagre amount of storage (512 GB) can only be expanded by replacing the built-in PCIe 4.0 M.2-2280 SSD.
Office and Internet applications and FHD gaming don’t pose a huge challenge to the laptop. At FHD, the HP Victus is generally able to run games at medium to sometimes high settings. Performance-intensive titles, such as Alan Wake 2, may require you to tone down settings.

Power management & emissions
The noise level generated by the laptop is tolerable without headphones. The two fans don't produce too much noise even under full load. The HP Victus doesn’t get especially warm either. Power requirement is covered by a 150-watt charger. The built-in 52.5 Wh battery provides the laptop with enough juice to last nearly eight hours in our realistic Wi-Fi test.
Verdict
The Victus does what it’s supposed to: run games smoothly on the display. And it accomplishes this without becoming too hot or noisy. The 15.6-inch device is also suitable for day-to-day use considering it only generates a low to moderate amount of noise overall.
However, the low price tag of €599 (US$645) comes at a cost: the laptop offers neither Thunderbolt 4 nor USB4, and is equipped with only 8 GB of RAM, a modest amount of storage, a display with poor viewing angle and no room for additional storage media. The last point in particular is no longer acceptable nowadays even in the budget segment.
