HP announces new OMEN 17 gaming laptop with switch to AMD Ryzen after almost a decade of Intel
HP has overhauled the OMEN 17, a gaming laptop that it has been selling for almost a decade. On the one hand, the company has given the OMEN 17 a new design with rounded corners and a wedge-shaped look that appears to taper towards its front edges. Still, the laptop peaks at 29.9 mm thickness and weighs in at 2.95 kg.
Additionally, the OMEN 17 2024 contains most of its ports on its rear, as shown below. Nonetheless, HP has included a sole USB Type-A port on one side, plus a 3.5 mm jack and an Ethernet connection on the other. On the other hand, HP has compromised performance in some areas, with an AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS used instead of the Intel Core i9-13900HX that powered the last OMEN 17.
Likewise, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 has made way for a GeForce RTX 4070, the total graphics power (TGP) of which it has not confirmed yet. Furthermore, the OMEN 17 2024 contains a 17.3-inch IPS display that resolves at 2,560 x 1,440 pixels with a 240 Hz refresh rate and 300 nits peak brightness. Unsurprisingly, HP includes a relatively large battery capacity, 83 Wh, which can be recharged at up to 230 W.
According to Windows Central, HP will begin selling the new OMEN 17 later this week in the US, with orders opening on April 24. Supposedly, the laptop will be available from $1,350; HP has not confirmed pricing for specific SKUs yet, though. By contrast, the OMEN 17 2024 is not expected to reach the Eurozone until next month for a minimum €1,199 MSRP.
