The ThinkPad E series may be the bottom of the barrel for the ThinkPad line, but that does not make them bad machines. For the newest version, Lenovo is returning the line back to fully upgradable RAM with two SO-DIMM slots.

For the ThinkPad series, the ThinkPad E is the runt of the litter. This series originally started out as the ThinkPad Edge and had a poor build quality compared to the more expensive ThinkPad models for many years which has improved with the recent versions. Also, the E series lacks all features needed to make them suitable for big enterprise customers, like WWAN, relegating the ThinkPad E series to the small-business section.

That being said, for many users, the E series provides a good entry world into the ThinkPad world, and they do provide one of the few affordable options for a laptop with the TrackPoint.

Lenovo has recently released the newest versions into the world, ThinkPad E14 G6 and ThinkPad E16 G2. The two novel additions to the line are not earth-shattering updates, as Lenovo keeps the old design of the previous ThinkPad E14 G5 (available from Amazon) and ThinkPad E16 G1 intact. The new Intel versions adopt Intel Core Ultra with the Core Ultra 7 155H as the fastest version. There will be AMD models as well, though those are not public yet.

Unlike the previous models, the new E ThinkPads feature DDR5 memory. A bigger change than the upgrade of the memory type is the fact that the memory is no longer partially soldered: E14 G6 and E16 G1 have two SO-DIMM slots now for up to 64 GB of completely upgradeable memory. This continues the trend of Lenovo returning to modular memory, which was started with this years ThinkPad T series. Also, the E series gains the new Windows co-pilot key.

Since the new ThinkPad E14 G6 and ThinkPad E16 G2 with Intel CPUs are already in Lenovo's PSREF specification database, it probably will not take long until these new models are available for purchase.
