Acer Aspire Vero 15 review: The impressive eco laptop with almost no compromises
A surprisingly good eco laptop: Acer's Aspire Vero 15 is no cheap laptop that's simply made from plastic but is sold for a high markup — instead, its total concept sets itself apart from the rest of the Acer Aspire series and as a result, it can be classed a mid-range device.
Sustainability is playing an increasingly large part in society, leading to more and more laptop manufacturers inching towards environmentally friendly design and recycling — however, this is still often limited to just the devices' packaging (with the exception of Apple's MacBooks, for example, which already use 100 % recycled aluminum). Subsequently, we will be taking a close look at whether the laptop's visuals, feel, stability, performance and other aspects suffer as a result of the focus on sustainability or whether they even profit from this.
Our test device is fitted with an Intel Core i7-1355U, 16 GB LPDDR5-RAM, a 512-GB SSD and a FHD IPS display with 100 % sRGB coverage. In addition, this is a prototype model with a US keyboard layout in Cypress Green. Within the EMEA region, this color variant can only be had as a cheaper Core-i5 model, while the i7 version can only be found in gray and with a 1-TB SSD. We already tested the smaller Aspire Vero 14 last year but lots has changed on this year's model.
The laptop barely faces any direct competition — however, it is interesting to compare it directly to the Framework Laptop, whose AMD base configuration costs a similar amount to the Vero with the Core-i7 CPU. It also makes sense to compare it with similarly priced consumer laptops, such as Lenovo's IdeaPad Pro 5 and HP's Envy series.

Eco case: 30 % less CO² during production
The Vero 15's case is truly one-of-a-kind and while this isn't for everyone, it certainly impressed our tester. Our prototype model has the colorway Cypress Green which, depending on the lighting, sometimes looks almost blue. Alternatively, you can get it in gray, while its 14-inch predecessor could be had in dark blue and the Vero 15 from 2022 also came in black. All variants feature some light color particles which give it an organic look and our model's rubber feet are mint green. Its nice surface structure, together with its color, is a little reminiscent of denim fabric (see pictures). No varnishes have been used on the laptop.
Its design has been kept very clean without the use of any stickers — however, logos are dotted about the device. Although its bezels are now narrower, they still feel a bit outdated due to the laptop's 16:9 aspect ratio.
The manufacturer has chosen to rely entirely on plastic which consists of 40 % PCR materials (post-consumer recycled) — 10 % more than its predecessor. In total, it supposedly generates 30 % less CO² during production compared to other similarly sized plastic cases. Even its conductor surface area is said to have been reduced by 52 % compared to its predecessor and any production waste occurring during the manufacturing process is recycled.
All-in-all, the laptop's case seems quite high-quality, which also has a positive effect on its stability: The base unit barely has any give and can't be twisted — the lid is also very stable and can only be twisted ever so slightly. Moreover, you can open the device up to ~150° with only one hand, while the hinges are still set firmly enough.
With a weight of 1.78 kg and a thickness of 17.8 mm, the 15.6-inch laptop's values are average in this field — only the Acer TravelMate P4 (which has the same screen size) is lighter, weighing 1.6 kg. The smaller 13.5-inch Framework Laptop weighs only 1.3 kg and has a smaller footprint, measuring only 296 mm wide.
Connectivity: The Acer Vero 15 surprises with a QHD webcam
Acer's eco laptop features 2x USB-A 3.2 (10 GBit/s), 2x Thunderbolt 4 incl. DisplayPort 1.4 and Power Delivery (65 watts), true HDMI 2.1, a 3.5 mm audio jack, a Kensington lock and a round charging port, while our test sample comes with a USB-C power supply.
It doesn't have an Ethernet connection or an SD card reader but in turn, it has been given a Thunderbolt 4 port.
Communication
Intel's Killer AX1675i is the WiFi 6E module installed into this device — it includes Bluetooth 5.1 and performs similarly to the laptop's competitors, with transfer rates up to ~1.6 GBit/s.
Webcam
A surprising new feature is its QHD webcam which boasts decent (although not amazing) picture quality. Even so, it delivers comparatively good pictures even in bad lighting conditions, making it more than suitable for video conference calls.
Adding to this are useful features such as Acer Purified View, Auto Framing, Gaze Correction and Advanced Background Blur. Unfortunately, it doesn't have an infrared sensor for Windows Hello or a physical cover.
Accessories
Aside from the 65-watt USB-C power supply, whose case is made from 50 % PCR (post-consumer recycled plastic), the laptop doesn't come with any additional accessories. As a result of this sustainable concept, up to 100 % of its packaging can be recycled and it is already made from up to 90 % recycled paper and polyester. You can also fold the inner separating wall into a laptop stand.
Maintenance
After removing 11 Phillips screws, you can access the inside of the laptop's case quite easily with the help of a spudger tool or a plastic chip. It's disappointing to see that the RAM is completely soldered on, while the 2022 model of the 15.6-inch Acer laptop has a second RAM slot. We would see this as being rather essential when you take into account the topic of sustainability. At least the M.2-2280 SSD can be swapped out, as can the WLAN module, the screwed-in battery and the BIOS battery. A second M.2-2280 slot is also hidden under the connection cable to the daughterboard.
Warranty
Acer gives this laptop a standard 12-month warranty in the US, which can be extended to up to 5 years via Acer Care Plus.
Input devices: Much better than expected for Acer's Aspire series
Keyboard
The laptop's six-row chiclet keyboard features normal-sized keys (16 x 16 mm), a low key lift of 1.3 mm, a noticeable pressure point and comfortable key resistance. All-in-all, it allows for fast typing and is a lot more comfortable than on the Acer Aspire 5, for example.
Its layout is good in total, with the exception of its halved vertical arrow keys, densely arranged numerical keypad and the usual double assignments. The keyboard is backlit and features two brightness settings.
Our prototype was sent with a US keyboard layout. The "Ǝ" and "Я" keys are mirrored, which is reminiscent of the slogan "reduce, reuse, recycle". The key caps are made from up to 50 % PCR plastic.
Touchpad
The device's "OceanGlass" touchpad (12.6 x 7.8 cm) is nice and smooth with a precision not much different to real glass. Compared to last year's OceanGlass touchpad on the Acer Swift X Serie, this is a massive improvement. Its Ocean-Bound certification means that it is made from plastic found within 50 km of the coast — plastic that, otherwise, would very likely have ended up in the ocean.
Multi-touch gestures and scrolling work flawlessly. The integrated click buttons have a very short lift and a satisfying click. On the top left is an integrated fingerprint scanner which works very fast and precisely.
Display: The eco laptop with a bright and colourful FHD panel
The Acer Aspire Vero 15 is fitted with a matte FHD IPS panel with a 60-Hz refresh rate and an aspect ratio of 16:9. There are no alternative options available. Pretty standard up until now, but the display offers two unique features that can't be found on the Aspire 5 or the TravelMate P4, for example: An average brightness of 373 cd/m² and an sRGB color space coverage of 100 %, leading to very colorful depiction.
Unfortunately, its contrast of 791:1 is a little low, as is its illumination level of 84%. Still, the laptop doesn't rely on PWM which possibly increases the likelihood of suffering from eye strain or headaches.
Thanks to its smaller 13.5" display with a 2.3K resolution, the Framework Notebook's picture is sharper and its disadvantage of having a smaller screen is somewhat mitigated by the fact it has an office-friendly aspect ratio of 3:2. The HP Envy x360 15 and the Asus VivoBook S15, on the other hand, offer the best contrast values and almost complete AdobeRGB coverage thanks to their OLED technology.

* ... smaller is better
Since the sRGB color space is fully covered, professional image and video editing — where accurate colors are important — is certainly possible, provided the low FHD resolution for these applications does not stand in your way.
Ex works, the laptop only misses the critical goal of DeltaE 3 (up to which the human eye cannot perceive color deviations) by a small amount — we measured a value of 3.07.
By calibrating the screen, we were able to lower this down to a very accurate 1.03 and even individual outliers never overstepped this mark. We even managed to correct the slight cyan tint. Our calibrated color profile can be downloaded here.

Thanks to the matte display with a brightness of 373 cd/m², you can even read from it well outdoors — as long as you avoid direct sunlight.
As is typical for IPS panels, the display remains legible even from extreme viewing angles.
Performance: A Core i5-1335U is the better choice in Acer's eco laptop
Our prototype model of the Acer Aspire Vero 15 is fitted with an Intel Core i7-1355U (2 P cores + 8 E cores), 16 GB soldered-on LPDDR5-4800 RAM, a 512-GB SSD and an Intel iGPU Iris Xe G7 (96 EUs). Within the EMEA region, the installed SSD has a capacity of 1 TB and you can additionally find a variant with a Core i5-1335U.
This makes it easy to complete office tasks and surf the web using the environmentally friendly laptop. It also has no problems with demanding photo editing, as well as simple Full HD video editing and running the simplest of games.
Testing conditions
Acer offers three performance modes in its VeroSense app, but they actually only correspond to the three Windows energy modes. We performed our performance benchmarks using "performance" mode, while we selected "balanced" in battery mode.
The following table and graph show that hardly any performance is lost in balanced mode, while the two fans work much more quietly.
Performance | Balanced | Eco | Battery @performance / @eco+ | |
---|---|---|---|---|
CPU PL2 | 56 watts | 56 watts | 27 watts | 37 watts / 18 watts |
CPU PL1 | 29 watts | 29 watts | 15 watts | 15 watts |
Processor
The installed Intel Core i7-1355U is a mobile processor with a 15-watt TDP, 2 P cores, 8 E cores and 12 threads. The P cores began to clock at 4 GHz and at 55 watts, which then balanced out to 3 GHz and 29 watts after 18 seconds at the latest.
The Vero's multi-core performance was 11 % behind its 14-inch predecessor with a Core i7-1255U, while the Framework Laptop with an eight-core AMD processor almost doubled the average Cinebench R15 result. Price-wise, the alternatively available Core i5-1335U is the better choice — within the Acer Swift Go 14, which seemingly uses the same motherboard, it achieved similar performance values.
We already noticed throttling of ~16 % after the first run, while in battery mode, it suffered a further performance loss of ~22 %.

System performance
The Intel system seems to react very fast. Surfing the web while simultaneously playing our 4K YouTube video didn't use up a lot of the laptop's resources, however, we did note quite a few dropped frames.
While it achieved average PCMark 10 results, the Vero 15 came out nearly on top when it came to web browsing performance (represented by Octane V2 and WebXPRT 3). This is a result of its high single-core performance and powerful multi-core turbo.

Its 512-GB M.2-2280 SSD from Kingston supports the PCIe 4.0 standard and achieves transfer rates of up to 3,000 MB/s — this is more expected from the PCIe 3.0 standard. Its 4K values in particular are below average and they were a lot better in last year's Vero 14.
In our performance ranking, this was still enough to achieve 4th place, and the Vero 15 also performed relatively well in the copying benchmark. However, a thermally induced, cyclical throttling occurred after some time, which can be seen in our endurance performance test graph below. Up to two M.2-2280 SSDs can be installed into the Aspire Vero.
