Acer Swift Go 14 (2023) review: The 14-inch laptop with a 2.9k OLED panel for US$800
The Acer Swift Go 14 is a compact 14-inch laptop with a sleek aluminum case that won't cost you an arm and a leg, currently costing just under US$800. A Raptor Lake processor gives it enough steam for office use. Competitors include the Asus ZenBook 14 UM3402Y, HP ProBook 445 G10, Apple MacBook Air 2020 M1 Entry and the Lenovo Yoga Pro 7 14ARP G8.
If you need a bigger screen, then it might be worth taking a look at the Swift Go 16. The Go 14's sister model features a 16-inch OLED panel with a higher resolution.

Case & connectivity - The Swift features two Thunderbolt 4 ports
The laptop's angular case doesn't show any build faults. Acer has chosen a silver (Pure Silver) aluminum with a smooth, matte surface. It is a little hard to open the laptop with one hand due to its stiff hinge and low weight. Its battery (screwed in, not glued on), as well as the rest of the laptop's innards, can be accessed once you have removed the bottom part of the case.
Two USB-A ports (USB 3.2 Gen 1) and two USB-C ports (Thunderbolt 4/USB 4; Power Delivery, DisplayPort) are on board. In total, the laptop offers up to three video outputs (1x HDMI, 2x DP). The installed SD card reader (MicroSD) takes things very slowly. A QHD webcam (3.7 MP, max. 2,560 x 1,440 pixels) achieves quite decent results. We don't quite understand why it doesn't feature a cover.
Under optimum conditions (no WiFi devices in close vicinity, short distance between laptop and server PC), it achieves very good WiFi data rates. The laptop uses a WiFi 6E chip (Intel AX211).

Input devices - The Acer laptop with a backlit keyboard
The chiclet keyboard's illuminated keys (2 brightness settings) feature a short lift and a clear pressure point. Their resistance could do with being a little better. The keyboard warps ever so slightly when you type, however, this isn't particularly annoying. All-in-all, Acer has delivered a keyboard fit for everyday use — even so, it certainly doesn't count as one of the best input devices on the market. A multi-touch enabled clickpad (around 10.5 x 6.5 cm) replaces the need for a mouse. It features a short lift and a clear pressure point.
Display - OLED with DCI-P3 coverage
Typical of OLED devices, the Acer laptop's 14-inch screen (2,880 x 1,800 pixels), which has a 16:10 aspect ratio, delivers an excellent black value and quick reaction speeds. With a pixel density of 242 ppi, the individual pixels can't be seen with the naked eye. The display is Vesa-certified (DisplayHDR 500 True Black).
The panel's weaknesses include its reflective surface, low brightness and some flickering (357 Hz) at brightness levels ≤ 100 per cent. The latter has to do with how the panel regulates its brightness.

Color accuracy is given: The sRGB and DCI-P3 color spaces are covered entirely, while the Adobe RGB space is almost completely covered. Its color depiction shows some room for improvement: With a deviation of 3.06, its target has been narrowly missed (DeltaE < 3). Calibrating doesn't lead to any improvements but it does enable more balanced gray tones.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)
Screen flickering / PWM detected | 357 Hz | ≤ 100 % brightness setting
The display backlight flickers at 357 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 100 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting. The frequency of 357 Hz is relatively high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering. However, there are reports that some users are still sensitive to PWM at 500 Hz and above, so be aware. In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 17900 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured. |
The viewing-angle stable panel remains legible from every angle. Outside, it is quite hard to read from the display due to its reflective surface and low maximum brightness.
Performance - Raptor Lake brings the power
Acer's Swift Go 14 is a portable 14-inch laptop with an OLED screen and an aluminum case. Raptor Lake (U or H) delivers enough power for office and internet uses, as well as simple games. At the time of writing, the present test device is the cheapest device of the series, costing around US$800.
Testing conditions
You can switch between three manufacturer-specific performance profiles (see table) using the key combination Fn + F — or alternatively via the pre-installed Quick Access app. The profiles "performance mode" (benchmarks) and "silent mode" (battery test) were used.
The performance and normal modes delivered almost identical results in all the tests we carried out. Normal mode is therefore ideal for everyday use — especially as the fans are used more discreetly. This may be different with more powerful Raptor Lake H variants of the Swift.
Performance mode | Normal mode | Silent mode

Processor
The Core i5-1335U's 10 CPU cores (2P, 8E) achieve maximum clock speeds of 4.6 GHz (P) and 3.4 GHz (E). Permanent multi-thread load (CB15 Loop) results in the clock rates sinking slightly from the first to the second run. After this, they remain constant.
The processor achieved below-average benchmark results compared to the previous CPU average (when connected to the mains). In battery use, its more relevant single-core performance (139 points; CB15) sinks to a larger extent than its multi-thread performance (1,087 points; CB15).

System performance
The smooth-running system copes with office and internet applications as well as the odd frugal game. The RAM's data rates are on a normal level for LPDDR5-4800 RAM. It isn't possible to expand the memory in the future: it is permanently soldered on and there are no memory banks.

Intel's iGPU is able to work at full power (1,250 MHz) all the time — as the Witcher 3 test shows. The hardware meets the requirements of many modest games — but the Swift is not a gaming laptop. Both the 3D Mark results and the frame rates are above the average of this iGPU.

Emissions & power - The Acer laptop produces little noise
Noise emissions
The laptop is one of the quietest of its kind. Its installed cooling unit is often silent in everyday use (office, internet), and the two fans run discreetly under medium load. It gets louder under full load: We measured sound pressure levels of 43.2 dB(A). This already low noise level can be further reduced by using the "silent mode" — at the expense of some computing power.
Negative: The fans emit a subtle whistling noise that becomes more intense as the speed increases. There is also a rattling noise inside the laptop (only noticeable in absolute silence).

Temperature
The laptop doesn't get all too warm under full load (stress test). In everyday use (office, internet), these values always remain in the green zone.
The stress test (Prime95 and Furmark in continuous use) simulates an extreme scenario in order to analyze how stable the system remains under full load. After beginning the test, the CPU clock rate sank considerably (P: 1.6 to 1.8 GHz, E: 1.4 to 1.5 GHz). The graphics card ran with values around 1,000 MHz.
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 44.8 °C / 113 F, compared to the average of 34.2 °C / 94 F, ranging from 21.2 to 62.5 °C for the class Office.
(+) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 34.8 °C / 95 F, compared to the average of 36.7 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 28.3 °C / 83 F, compared to the device average of 29.5 °C / 85 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are reaching skin temperature as a maximum (33.1 °C / 91.6 F) and are therefore not hot.
(-) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 27.7 °C / 81.9 F (-5.4 °C / -9.7 F).

Power consumption
We noted no anomalies in terms of the Acer laptop's power consumption. Its values are on a normal level for the hardware installed. The stress test and Witcher 3 test were run with constant power consumption. The supplied USB-C power supply (65 watts) is sufficiently sized.

Runtimes
The Swift achieved a runtime of 7:33 h in our practical WLAN test (mapping the load when accessing websites using a script) — a reasonable value. By activating the system-wide dark mode, this runtime can be extended by a good 40 minutes to a total of 8:14 h. Its competitors all perform better, as they have more frugal processors and/or larger-capacity batteries on board.
Pros
Cons
Verdict - A successful office allrounder with quite a few weaknesses
A low weight (about 1.3 kg), decent runtimes, Power Delivery and a robust metal case all make the Swift Go a good mobile companion. Two USB-C ports (TB4) make it easy to integrate the laptop into existing workplace setups.
Sleek appearance, enough power, affordable — the Acer Swift Go 14 could find its place in schools, universities and offices.
Its portable capabilities are slightly undermined by its colorful (DCI-P3), contrast-rich OLED panel (2,880 x 1,800 pixels, 90 Hz) with a 16:10 aspect ratio: Its reflective surface with low maximum brightness makes the laptop only suitable for indoor use. Positive: A QHD webcam (3.7 MP) is situated above the screen.
A Core i5-1335U, 16 GB RAM (dual-channel) and a PCIe 4 SSD (512 GB) equip the device for office and internet use. Its emissions pose no reason for concern: The laptop usually runs quietly and barely gets warm.
An alternative could be the Asus ZenBook 14 UM340. It offers better CPU performance and longer runtimes. However, it doesn't feature any USB 4 or Thunderbolt 4 ports.
