Asus Zenbook 14 UM3402Y laptop review: New Ryzen 7 7730U name, old Zen 3 performance
The ZenBook 14 UM3402Y is the latest model in Asus' increasingly crowded Zenbook family. It's a new design yet again that's distinct from the existing 2022 Zenbook 14 UM425 or Zenbook 14X OLED.
Our unit in review is a higher-end SKU with the Ryzen 7 7730U CPU, 16 GB LPDDR4X RAM, and 14-inch 2.8K 90 Hz OLED touchscreen for $870 USD. Lesser SKUs are available with the Ryzen 7 5825U, Ryzen 5 7530U, or Ryzen 5 5625U instead, but all options otherwise come with the same OLED display and integrated Radeon RX graphics.
Competitors to the Zenbook 14 include other high-end 14-inch subnotebooks like the LG Gram 14, Lenovo Yoga Slim 9 14, Huawei MateBook X Pro, or the HP Dragonfly Pro. The Asus VivoBook 14 series can be considered a more budget-friendly alternative tot the Zenbook 14.

Case — NanoEdge In Jade Black
The most notable physical changes when compared to last year's ZenBook 14 UM425U are the repositioned ports and redesigned rear. More specifically, the hinges have new silver trims and the rear of the lid is now flatter with no hooked design. The ErgoLift effect remains and so the base still rises at a slight angle when the lid is opened.
Chassis rigidity is about the same as before despite the aesthetic changes. Attempting to flex the base or lid would result in slightly more creaking and warping than on the stiffer HP Spectre x360 13.5 or Dell XPS 13 9300. The flexing is thankfully not nearly as bad as on the Framework Laptop or an older VivoBook 14, however.
The model is both heavier and thicker than the 2022 Zenbook 14 UM425U which is disappointing. It's still smaller and lighter than the competing Yoga Pro 7 14 or Inspiron 14 Plus 7420, but these alternatives offer faster performance than our Asus.
Connectivity — No USB4
Port options include everything from the older Zenbook 14 UM425U plus the return of the 3.5 mm audio jack. The HDMI 2.1 port is great to see as some subnotebooks like the Spectre x360 13.5 lack the option.
Unfortunately, the two USB-C ports are only 3.2 instead of 4.0 meaning eGPUs are not supported. In contrast, the USB-C ports on the Lenovo Yoga Pro 7 14 are 4.0.
SD Card Reader
Strangely, AS SSD claims a transfer rate of almost 205 MB/s with our AV PRO V60 MicroSD card while real-world transfer rates with our 1 GB test files would be much slower at 68 MB/s. Multiple retests would result in no changes. When considering that the SD card readers on all Zenbook 14 model thus far have been limited to just ~70 MB/s, users are more likely to experience a similar speed with the Zenbook 14 UM3402Y.

Communication
A MediaTek MediaTek MT7922 comes standard for Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2 support. We experienced no performance issues when paired to our Wi-Fi 6E 6 GHz network. When paired to our Wi-Fi 6 5 GHz network, however, transmit rates would be unusually slow at only ~350 Mbps even after multiple retests.

A 2 MP webcam comes standard with no IR. An electronic kill switch is supported in lieu of a sliding shutter.
Maintenance
The bottom panel is secured by nine Phillips screws two of which are hidden underneath the rear rubber feet. Users have direct access to the removable WLAN module and M.2 2280 SSD while the RAM modules are soldered.
Accessories and Warranty
The retail box includes a handy USB-A to RJ-45 adapter in addition to the AC adapter and paperwork. The usual one-year limited manufacturer warranty applies if purchased in the US.
Input Devices — ErgoSense With Low-Friction Coating
Keyboard
The keyboard keys offer 1.4 mm of travel which is typical of many Ultrabooks. Key feedback is average if not slightly on the softer side when compared to the firmer keys on the HP Spectre x360 13.5. The Enter key in particular could have benefited from stronger and more satisfying feedback when pressed.
Touchpad
The clickpad (13 x 7.4 cm) is slightly longer and narrower than the clickpads on the Spectre x360 13.5 (12.5 x 8 cm) or Inspiron 14 Plus 7420 (11.5 x 8 cm), but it is spacious nonetheless. Traction is super smooth with just a bit of sticking at slower speeds for more accurate inputs.
Clicking on the clickpad is noticeably firmer and louder than on most other Ultrabook clickpads including on the aforementioned HP and Dell models. The Zenbook clickpad is therefore more satisfying to use even if travel is still in the shallow side.
Display — 16:10, OLED, 1800p, 90 Hz, HDR
The new Zenbook utilizes a similar Samsung ATNA40YK07 OLED panel as found on the Acer Predator Triton 300 SE or Swift 3 SF314. Thus, the viewing experience between all three models is essentially identical with their 1800p resolution, full DCI-P3 colors, and 90 Hz refresh rate.
Asus advertises a peak brightness of 550 nits which we can confirm only when displaying HDR content. When running this HDR test, for example, we're able to record a maximum brightness of 542 nits on our test unit. Otherwise, maximum brightness is limited to just ~340 nits when displaying SDR content which is still in line with most IPS-based subnotebooks.
Flickering is present on all brightness much like on most other OLED displays. We're able to measure a flickering frequency of 362 Hz on our particular unit.

Asus claims a Pantone-validated display which we can confirm with our own X-Rite colorimeter measurements. However, the display is set to sRGB by default even though it supports the DCI-P3 gamut. Grayscale and colors are otherwise accurate out-of-the-box with average DeltaE values of just 1.4 and 0.84, respectively.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)
Screen flickering / PWM detected | 362.3 Hz | ≤ 100 % brightness setting | |
The display backlight flickers at 362.3 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 100 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting. The frequency of 362.3 Hz is relatively high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering. However, there are reports that some users are still sensitive to PWM at 500 Hz and above, so be aware. In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 17900 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured. |
Outdoor visibility is average at best even when under shade due to the glossy glass overlay. Glare is difficult to avoid and colors can look washed out as a result.

Testing Conditions
We set our unit to Performance mode via Windows and the MyAsus software. Unfortunately, the Asus-specific power profiles are not synced with the Windows power profiles and so it is possible to have Windows set to Power Saver and MyAsus set to Performance simultaneously. Some OEMs like Dell sync their power profiles with Windows for easier operation.
Processor — Zen 3 Ryzen 7 7730U
Though the Ryzen 7 7730U is a 7000 series CPU, its underlying architecture is based on the Zen 3 platform instead of the newer Zen 3+ or Zen 4. Thus, the CPU can be considered a rebrand of the older Ryzen 7 5800U as both carry the same number of cores, threads, and L1/L2/L3 cache sizes. Nonetheless, the Ryzen 7 7730U still outperforms the Ryzen 7 5800U by at least 10 to 15 percent due to clock rate optimizations.
Downgrading to the Ryzen 7 5825U configuration from our Ryzen 7 7730U is expected to decrease multi-thread CPU performance by just 5 to 10 percent.

Storage Devices — PCIe3 Speeds Only
Our test unit ships with a midrange 512 GB Micron 2400 PCIe4 x4 NVMe SSD. When compared to pricier PCIe4 x4 NVMe SSDs like the Samsung PM9A1 that can offer transfer rates of over 7000 MB/s, our Micron drive is rated for a theoretical maximum of just 4200 MB/s. A real-world test on our Zenbook unit shows an even slower throughout of just 3200 MB/s since the Asus model supports up to PCIe3 speeds only. For the target audience, however, the drive balances well with this particular Ryzen U-series CPU.

GPU Performance — Older Radeon RX Vega 8
The Ryzen 7 7730U utilizes the older integrated Radeon RX Vega 8 instead of the much more impressive Radeon 680M. Thus, overall graphics performance lies in between the competing Iris Xe 80 EUs and Iris Xe 96 EUs. It's unfortunate that there is no Radeon 680M option as that would have improved performance by as much as 1.5x to 2x.
The latest games are generally unplayable unless if on the lowest 720p settings. Furthermore, frame rates may occasionally dip over time as shown by our unsteady Witcher 3 frame rates below when idling on the world map.

System Noise — High-Pitched When Running Demanding Loads
The internal fan is quiet during low loads like browsing or video streaming. It generally hovers at or below 28.8 dB(A) against a silent background of 22.6 dB(A) which is low enough to be almost inaudible in classrooms or office environments.
Unfortunately, fan noise is high-pitched and more noticeable when running more demanding loads like games. Witcher 3, for example, would induce a fan noise of 46.6 dB(A) and a sharper noise graph compared to just 36 dB(A) and a shallower graph on the HP Spectre x360 13.5. Fan noise can be even louder at over 52 dB(A) if the CPU is at 100 percent utilization to be louder than most other subnotebooks.

Temperature
Surface temperatures will always be warmer on the right half of the laptop than the left due to the positioning of the processor inside. The hot spot on the keyboard can reach up to 40 C as shown by the temperature map below which is comparable to the faster Yoga Pro 7 14ARP G8 under similar loads. However, the Lenovo model can be much warmer on its bottom side by almost 7 C.
(+) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 39.4 °C / 103 F, compared to the average of 36.9 °C / 98 F, ranging from 21.1 to 71 °C for the class Multimedia.
(±) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 43.2 °C / 110 F, compared to the average of 39.1 °C / 102 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 27.3 °C / 81 F, compared to the device average of 31.2 °C / 88 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 28.2 °C / 82.8 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(±) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 28.8 °C / 83.8 F (+0.6 °C / 1 F).

Stress Test
The CPU would spike to 3.6 GHz and 42 W when initiating Prime95 stress. When core temperature reaches 85 C a few seconds later, however, clock rate and board power draw would fall and stabilize at 3.0 to 3.1 GHz and 30 W, respectively. Turbo Boost potential is therefore short-lived at best which is to be expected from a U-series processor.
Core temperature would stabilize in the low 70 C to 75 C range compared to the mid-to-high 80 C range on the Framework Laptop when running demanding loads like games.
Running on battery power impacts performance slightly. A 3DMark 11 test on batteries would return Physics and Graphics scores of 12676 and 5878 points, respectively, compared to 13922 and 6627 points when on mains.

Power Consumption — The OLED Factor
The system demands as low as 8 W when idling on desktop up to almost 15 W when on the maximum brightness setting with a completely white screen. OLED power consumption depends on the colors shown and it is generally more demanding than IPS as demonstrated here. 14-inch laptops with IPS panels like the ZenBook 14 UM425U or Yoga Pro 7 14ARP G8, for example, would each draw a few watts less even when on the maximum brightness setting.
Power consumption when under heavier loads is very close to the Yoga 7-14ARB G7 powered by the faster Ryzen 7 6800U. Any year-over-year gains in performance-per-watt are therefore minimal at best.
We're able to record a temporary maximum draw of 65 W from the small (~6.3 x 6.3 x 2.8 cm) 65 W AC adapter when the CPU is at 100 percent utilization. The charging rate slows if running very demanding loads.

Battery Life — Larger Capacity Battery
Runtime is excellent at over 12 hours of real-world WLAN usage to be comparable to the LG Gram 14Z90Q or Yoga Pro 7 14ARP G8. When compared to last year's Zenbook 14 UM425, the Zenbook 14 UM3402 carries a slightly larger battery pack to compensate for the more demanding OLED panel.
Charging from empty to full capacity takes about 90 minutes with the included AC adapter.

Verdict — High-end Display With Mid-range Looks At An Affordable Price
For under $900 USD, the Zenbook 14 UM3402Y is compelling especially for its 90 Hz OLED touchscreen and generally higher build quality than a typical Asus VivoBook, HP Pavilion, or Lenovo IdeaPad alternative. If you do a lot of on-the-go photo editing and can exploit the wide color gamut of OLED, then this particular Zenbook can fill the niche without breaking the bank.
The 90 Hz OLED touchscreen continues to be the highlight for the relatively affordable Zenbook 14. If you don't care for OLED, then other options exist with faster CPUs and GPUs.
The drawbacks and disadvantages to the Zenbook 14 UM3402Y are more internal than external. The new Ryzen 7 7730U processor, for example, performs so similarly to the two-year old Ryzen 7 5800U that performance hunters may be left disappointed. In this case, users may have to consider the larger and more powerful Zenbook Pro 14, Yoga Pro 7 14, or Inspiron 14 Plus 7420 instead all of which offer H-series CPUs. The high-pitched fan noise when under load, relatively slow MicroSD card reader, and lack of USB4 support can also irk power users and photographers. These cut corners can make the Zenbook 14 feel more like a cheaper VivoBook 14 at times.
Price and Availability
Our review configuration is now shipping at Walmart for $870 USD. The lesser Ryzen 5 7530U SKU with half the RAM and storage is also shipping for $700.
