Lenovo Yoga Pro 7 14 G8 notebook review: GeForce RTX 4050 laptop powers 3K display with 120 Hz
We recently examined the new Yoga Pro 7 14 with the AMD processor and iGPU as well as the AMD/GeForce RTX 3050 variant, both of which came with a 2.5K display. On the other hand, Lenovo also offers the compact 14-inch device with an Intel Raptor Lake processor, a dedicated GeForce RTX 4050 Laptop GPU, a higher-resolution 3K IPS panel with faster response times, 120 Hz, and a larger P3 color space. It is this variant that is the subject of today's review, which, in conjunction with 16 GB RAM and a 1 TB PCIe 4.0 SSD, has a RRP of EUR 1,699 (~US$1875).
The more powerful configuration has the same case, input devices and speakers as the previously reviewed AMD model, which is why we primarily focus on the new display and performance values in this review. Our previous articles are also available for all further information:

Differences to the AMD model
There are no differences in the case to the previously reviewed AMD variant, but the weight is slightly higher at 1,520 grams due to the additional Nvidia GPU. Design and stability as well as workmanship of the aluminum chassis are identical and thus on a very high level.
The ports are also identical, but the two USB-C sockets of the Intel version support the modern Thunderbolt 4 standard. Otherwise there are no differences in equipment between the two models.

Input Devices - Comfortable keyboard with 1.5 mm travel
In terms of input devices, there are no differences to the previously reviewed iGPU variant of the Yoga Pro 7 14. With a key travel of 1.5 mm, typing is very comfortable. Overall, there were no issues during operation. More details are available in our previous review.
Display - 14.5-inch with 3K resolution and 120 Hz
The optional 3K panel with a resolution of 3072x1920 pixels in an aspect ratio of 16:10 is installed in our test device. As with the base model, this is also a matte IPS screen, which is also optionally available as a touchscreen. The monitor also supports a higher frequency of 120 Hz, which you first have to activate in the Windows settings. The subjective image quality is very good. Colors look vivid and content is displayed very sharply. Furthermore, we did not observe any instances of grainy images on bright surfaces. PWM flickering does not occur here either and the response times are even a little faster than in the 2.5K variant.
Lenovo specifies a brightness of 400 cd/m², which our test device surpasses with an average of ~450 cd/m². However, the black value of 0.34 cd/m² is a little high, which is why the maximum contrast ratio is "only" ~1,300:1. Screen bleeding is practically non existent.

* ... smaller is better
Lenovo advertises the 3K panel with full P3 coverage and offers a choice between P3 and sRGB in the Vantage app if you wish to work in the smaller color space. We measured the panel using professional CalMAN software (X-Rite i1 Pro 2) and the display is already very well calibrated in factory state. Compared to the P3 reference color space, both the grayscale and the colors are well below important target values of 3. Hence, subsequent calibration is not necessary and together with the almost complete P3 coverage, the 3K panel is perfectly ideal for image-/video editing. We were unable to improve the display any further with our own calibration, which is why a color profile is not offered for download here.

In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 17900 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured. |
The outdoor suitability of the 3K panel is good because the combination of decent brightness and a matte surface allows for a good visibility of content. The viewing angle stability also leaves no room for criticism.
Performance - Raptor Lake & Ada Lovelace
For the Intel model, Lenovo installs the current Raptor-Lake processors from the H-series, either the Core i5-13500H or the Core i7-13700H of our test configuration. These are available either with the iGPU, or with a dedicated GeForce RTX 3050 or GeForce RTX 4050. The RAM size (LPDDR5-5200) is either 16 or 32 GB, but the user does not have the option of expanding the RAM here.
Testing Conditions
As usual, Lenovo offers three performance modes (Battery Saver, Intelligent Cooling & High Performance). While there was no real benefit in High Performance mode for the AMD modell with the iGPU, things are different here, because only in High Performance mode can users extract maximum performance out of the RTX 4050 and the performance is also better under combined loads. We have listed the different TDP/TGP values in the table below:
Performance mode | CPU load | GPU load | Stress test | Max. fan volume |
---|---|---|---|---|
Battery Saver | 50 -> 20 watts | 12 watts | CPU: 15 watts GPU: 12 watts |
30 dB(A) |
Intelligent Cooling | 64 -> 42 watts | 35 watts | CPU: 25 watts GPU: 25 watts |
37,7 dB(A) |
High Performance | 80 -> 53 watts | 55 watts | CPU: 30-64 watts GPU: 40 watts |
46,2 dB(A) |
High Performance mode was used by default for the following benchmarks and measurements. If you don't need full performance in everyday life, you can easily switch between the modes using the Fn+Q key combination, whereas Battery Saver mode reduces the performance massively.
Processor - Core i7-13700H
The Intel Core i7-13700H from the current Raptor-Lake generation is basically an old Core i7-12700H with a slightly higher turbo clock. It is still a very fast mobile processor with 6 performance cores (including hyperthreading) and 8 efficiency cores, which is why the CPU can process a maximum of 20 threads simultaneously. In principle, it is a 45-watt processor, but this has little to do with its real-world capabilities, since the processor is able to consume more than 120 watts. In the case of the Yoga Pro 7 14, the processor is allowed to consume up to 80 watts, which levels off at 55 watts after a few minutes. This means that the Intel processor can also consume more than its AMD counterpart (max. 60 watts), which is why there is a clear advantage over the Ryzen 7 7735HS at the beginning of our Cinebench R15 multi loop and in the benchmarks.
Cinebench R15 Multi Sustained Load
Overall, CPU performance is very good, both in the multi-core and in the single-core tests, but this also comes at the price of high power consumption. On the other hand, you can also use Intelligent Cooling mode in everyday use without issue.
In Battery Saver mode, the Core i7-13700H is limited to a maximum of 70 watts, which results in a small performance deficit of just 5% in multi-core scenarios. More CPU benchmarks are available here.

DPC Latency
Our Yoga Pro 7 14 test variant reveals slight limitations in the standardized latency test (web browsing, 4K YouTube playback, CPU load) with the present BIOS version and is therefore only suitable for using real-time audio applications to a limited extent.

Storage Devices
Lenovo equips the Yoga Pro 7 with a fast PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD, which comes from Samsung in our test device. The PM9A1 (OEM version of the 980 Pro) offers a storage capacity of 1 TB, of which 890 GB is available when starting up for the first time. The transfer rates are very good, but performance cannot be maintained under sustained load due to temperature problems and drops by around 50% after a few minutes. However, the rates are still around 3 GB/s, so there is no real disadvantage in everyday use. More SSD benchmarks are listed here.

Graphics Card
In addition to the integrated Iris Xe Graphics G7 GPU, which takes care of the graphics output in undemanding tasks, the Yoga Pro 7 14 is also equipped with the dedicated Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050 Laptop graphics card. With a maximum power consumption of 55 watts, it is by no means the fastest variant of the GPU, which consumes around 90-95 watts when gaming (higher TGP specifications are irrelevant for the RTX 4050 laptop when gaming, as we saw in our review of the new GPUs). On the other hand, the power rating is still perfectly fine for a compact 14-inch device.
We have already reviewed the Yoga Pro 7 14 with the Ryzen 7 7735HS and the GeForce RTX 3050 (max. 58 watts), which conveniently enables us to draw direct comparisons in performance. In the synthetic tests, the new RTX 4050 is between 30-40% faster, which is a very good result for comparable power consumption. However, the GPU is also around 25% slower than the fastest variant of the RTX 4050 that we tested in the 15-inch MSI Katana 15, for example.
The graphics performance does not remain completely stable under sustained load, because the Time Spy stress test just fails at 95%. In Battery Saver, the graphics card is allowed to consume a maximum of 45 watts, which is why the graphics performance only drops by about 8%. More GPU benchmarks are available in our tech section.

Even current titles such as Cyberpunk 2077, F1 2022 or Hogwarts Legacy can be played on the Yoga without problems, but you should limit yourself to 1080p, where maximum details are possible. In QHD resolution, FPS numbers drop into the 30 FPS range in demanding titles. Gaming performance remains almost completely stable in longer sessions.

Noise
In everyday use, the Yoga Pro 7 14 is a very quiet companion without any annoying electronic noise. However, if you use High Performance mode all the time, the fans start up quickly, even during short load peaks (which is intentional), which can be somewhat annoying during simple tasks. Under load, there is a clearly audible difference between the Intelligent Cooling and High Performance modes, which can also be seen in the following table:
Application | Battery Saver | Intelligent Cooling | High Performance |
---|---|---|---|
3DMark 06 | 30 dB(A) | 37,7 dB(A) | 43,7 dB(A) |
Witcher 3 | 30 dB(A) | 37,7 dB(A) | 46,2 dB(A) |
Stress test | 30 dB(A) | 37,7 dB(A) | 46,2 dB(A) |
Regarding gaming, it is worth testing Intelligent Cooling mode if the game runs properly. This can make a big difference, particularly without headphones. However, even in High Performance mode, the Yoga is the quietest device in our comparison group (even though the differences are not big). The device is much quieter in Battery Saver mode, but performance is simply too low for games to run properly.

Temperature
Surface temperatures are always an interesting topic in view of the powerful components and compact chassis, but Lenovo does a good job here overall. During undemanding tasks, the notebook does not heat up at all and there are only two hot spots on the underside, each in the upper middle area of the base unit. The keyboard never gets uncomfortably warm at a maximum of 41 °C in the stress test and around 39 °C during gaming. However, the hotspot on the bottom is much warmer with a maximum of almost 56 °C in the stress test and 49 °C during gaming and so direct skin contact should be avoided in this case.
In stress testing, the CPU levels off at just under 35 and the GPU levels off at 40 watts, which remain the same throughout the test. No drop in power directly after the stress test was observed.
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 41.6 °C / 107 F, compared to the average of 36.9 °C / 98 F, ranging from 21.1 to 71 °C for the class Multimedia.
(-) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 55.7 °C / 132 F, compared to the average of 39.1 °C / 102 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 24.9 °C / 77 F, compared to the device average of 31.2 °C / 88 F.
(±) Playing The Witcher 3, the average temperature for the upper side is 33 °C / 91 F, compared to the device average of 31.2 °C / 88 F.

Power Management - 3K panel with increased energy requirements
Power Consumption
Compared to the iGPU variant of the Yoga Pro 7 14 with the matte 2.5K panel, our test unit, with its higher resolution 3K display and higher frequency of 120 Hz, consumes more power when idling and we measured more than 13 watts at full brightness. Under load, the increased power consumption of the Intel processor and the GeForce GPU is of course noticeable, which is why Lenovo also ships this configuration with a stronger 140-watt power adapter.
In the stress test, we briefly see a maximum consumption of slightly more than 140 watts, which then quickly settles at around 100 watts. This dynamic should also be expected during gaming, so the 140 watt power supply is completely sufficient overall. The low standby consumption rates are also a positive point.

Battery Life
The battery runtimes are also slightly worse than those of the iGPU variant, namely three hours less in both the WLAN test and the video test (each run at 150 cd/m² - 76% of the maximum brightness in the test device). On the other hand, the results of just under 10 hours in the Wi-Fi test and ~12.5 hours in the video test are still competitive in themselves and within the comparison group. In the WLAN test at full display brightness, the runtime drops to just over 7 hours. When the 120 Hz mode is active (by default, the frequency is set to 60 Hz in Battery Saver), the runtime in the WLAN test amounts to around 2 hours at 150 cd/m² and around 1 hour less at full brightness.

Verdict - Yoga Pro 7 14 also cuts a very good figure with the RTX 4050
The iGPU model of the new Lenovo Yoga Pro 7 14 made a very good impression in our review a few weeks ago - an efficient CPU/iGPU combination, good chassis, very good keyboard, long battery life and a good IPS display with a matte surface. At the other end of the model series is our current review unit, which utilizes the Intel/Nvidia combination as well as the optional 3K display. Of course, the fundamentally good characteristics of the chassis and the input devices also apply to the Intel model, and Thunderbolt 4 support is also available here.
There are of course significant differences in performance. Thanks to the new GeForce RTX 4050 Laptop GPU, the Yoga is now more of a multimedia laptop and is also able to handle current titles in 1080p without issue. Of course, this is not the fastest version of the RTX 4050 with its maximum TGP of 55 watts, but in view of the compact 14-inch case, the performance values are absolutely fine. Compared to the old GeForce RTX 3050 Laptop GPU, you can expect a lead of more than 30%. The Intel processor also offers good performance, but it is also not quite as efficient as the AMD model.
The optional matte 3K panel offers very good image quality without PWM flickering, although the subjective difference to the standard 2.5K model isn't that large. In addition to higher resolution, it also offers slightly faster frequency, faster response times, greater color space coverage and excellent color accuracy ex works compared to the P3 reference, which is why you can start editing images right away. The 3K panel is also a little brighter, but also requires more power, which makes itself noticeable in the battery runtimes. In principle, you can't go wrong with either display variant, but those who are not into image editing or the fastest first-person shooters can also grab the normal 2.5K IPS display without hesitation.
Equipped with a GeForce RTX 4050 Laptop GPU and a 3K display with full P3 coverage, the Lenovo Yoga Pro 7 14 becomes a fantastic multimedia laptop. As expected, the battery runtimes and emissions are worse than in the iGPU variant, but current titles can be played smoothly in 1080p and at maximum details.
The louder fans are acceptable in view of the higher performance and the performance mode can be toggled at the push of a button. The performance is then still sufficient for most games, but at the same time you benefit from the significantly quieter fans (~38 vs. 46 dB(A)). The RAM cannot be expanded in the Intel version either, but the user can at least select 32 GB when buying it. Another drawback is the shorter battery life, as the 3K panel in particular requires more power. However, the Yoga Pro 7 14 is still competitive in a class comparison.
Gigabyte has created a direct competitor in the new Aero 14 OLED, which also utilizes the Core i7-13700H as well as the GeForce RTX 4050 Laptop GPU. However, performance is a little lower than that of the Lenovo and not every user wants an OLED screen, and the Aero 14 OLED is also EUR 300 (~US$330) more expensive. We will also review the current MSI Stealth 14 Studio soon, which not only comes with the 13700H/RTX 4050 combination, but also with a 240 Hz QHD panel. However, the price here is also just under US$2000. The Schenker Vision 14 remains an interesting choice with lower weight and better serviceability, but the components are yet to be updated to the current standard and the old RTX 3050 Ti is around 20-25% slower when gaming.
