HP Envy x360 Intel i7-1355U Convertible Review: Intel superior to AMD

We tested the HP Envy x360 15 in its AMD version just last year, but Intel processors were already available for the convertible last year. Dell has replaced the i7-1260P Alder Lake processor with the Intel Raptor Lake i7-1355U for this year. The chassis is almost identical to the predecessor and identical to this year's AMD-version of the HP Envy x360 15. Our test device does not offer a dedicated graphics card and therefore relies on the Intel Iris Xe G7 96EUs iGPU.
The focus of the promotion for the new HP Envy x360 15 is the IMAX Enhanced certification. This certificate is only awarded if a system's display and speakers meet the strict quality standards of IMAX and DTS. IMAX Enhanced films, which are available via streaming services such as Prime Video and Netflix, can thus replicate the IMAX cinema experience as best as possible. The starting price of the Intel variants is 1,099 US dollars in the basic version.
In order to assess the performance of the HP Envy x360 15 Intel, we compared the AMD variant model with the identical chassis and display. Furthermore, the model from the previous year, also featuring an AMD processor, was used for the comparison. The Lenovo ThinkBook Plus Gen4 IRU is also a possible competitor, as it has the same i7-1355U processor. Other competitors are the Lenovo Yoga 7-14ARB G7, the Dell Latitude 9440 2-in-1 and the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 14IRU8.

Case - High quality and without real weaknesses
The Intel variant of the HP Envy x360 15 uses the same chassis as the variant with the AMD processor. Since we already dealt with the chassis in detail in our review of the AMD model, we refer to our HP Envy x360 15 AMD (2023) review for more information. However, our HP Envy x360 15 test device with Intel processor came in the Natural Silver Aluminum color. Compared to the Nightfall Black Aluminum of the AMD test device, fingerprints are even less noticeable here.
I/O - Better connectivity with the Intel model
The HP Envy x360 15 Intel offers almost the identical ports as the AMD variant, but has a clear advantage: The two USB-C ports on the right side are also capable of Thunderbolt 4. They are therefore also suitable for charging, but are much more flexible for connecting to different displays and offer significantly higher transfer rates of up to 40 Gbit/s.
SD Card Reader
The SD card reader of the HP Envy x360 15 Intel isn't slow, but unfortunately cannot keep up with the very good result of the HP Envy x360 15 AMD (2023).

Communication
The Intel version also uses a WiFi 6E chip. Instead of the MediaTek chip, an Intel chip is installed here, but the performance of the two WiFi modules is almost identical. The performance is therefore still slightly below average compared to other convertibles.
Webcam
The built-in webcam delivers a minimally worse image than that of the AMD variant. However, the 5 MP sensor still provides a picture quality that is superior to most competitors. IR and Windows Hello are also on board and so are the other additional functions of the HP software.

Accessories and warranty - Pen is also missing from the Intel variant
Packaging and accessories for the HP Envy x360 15 Intel are identical to the AMD version. The input pen, which can be seen in many product photos, is thus not available here either. An alternative, such as the HP Active Pen, is available for 33 dollars on Amazon.
The environmental strategy for the packaging is also questionable for the Intel model. Instead of using environmentally friendly packaging everywhere, the cable organizer is made of cardboard, but the power supply unit is shrink-wrapped in foil.
In the US, HP offers a 1-year warranty for the convertible.
Maintenance - base plate fixed with only 4 screws
The base plate of the HP Envy x360 15 Intel (2023) is attached with only four screws and is therefore very easy to loosen. However, picks and suction cups are recommended to get under the panel and loosen the fastening clips. We had significantly more problems removing the bottom panel of the AMD version of the convertible. Since the chassis is basically identical, accessibility seems to differ from device to device. Inside, the M.2-2280 PCIe slot and the WiFi module can be replaced. The battery can also be removed with only 5 screws.
Input devices - Very good overall package
Keyboard and trackpad do not differ compared to the AMD variant. More details can be found in our review of the HP Envy x360 15 AMD (2023).
Display - OLED with minor problems
Both the HP Envy x360 15 (2023) with Intel processor and the variant with AMD processor have the same OLED display from Samsung. However, the comparison with the HP Envy x360 15 AMD shows differences between the models. The average brightness of just under 380 nits is very similar and more than solid.
However, it turns out that the OLED panel of the Intel variant delivers worse average DeltaE values both before and after calibration. The color values are 4.7 before calibration and 3.8 after calibration. For comparison: the AMD variant was already at a value of 3.1 before calibration and could be improved to 2.4 by calibration. The differences were similar for the average DeltaE values for the greyscales. The Intel model was 5.2 before calibration and 2.9 after calibration. The AMD model was 2.9 before calibration and improved to 0.6. It could be that the AMD iGPU can drive the display minimally better than the Intel iGPU.

There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting. The frequency of 50 Hz is very low, so the flickering may cause eyestrain and headaches after extended use. In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 8549 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 343500) Hz was measured. |
Performance - Intel vs. AMD
With the 2023 model of the HP Envy x360 15 Intel, the manufacturer relies on a 13th generation processor that replaces the Intel Core i7-1260P of the previous year's model. The test device also does not have a dedicated graphics card and instead relies on the Intel Iris XE Graphics G7 96EUs iGPU.
Testing conditions
In addition to the Windows power modes, further settings for the TDP of the convertible can be made via the HP Command Center. For our test, the Performance mode was selected in the HP Command Center and the Windows performance settings. Without the HP Command Center, the device's maximum performance cannot be exploited.
As with the AMD variant of the convertible, the HP Command Center offers four different performance modes. Unlike the AMD model, however, the TDP only changes in three of the four modes. In Cooling and Quiet mode, the TDP remains the same.

Processor
The Intel version of the HP Envy x360 15 (2023) uses the Core i7-1355U, a high-end processor based on Raptor-Lake. The CPU performance is exactly on par with an average notebook in our database that is equipped with the same chip. Compared to the Lenovo ThinkBook Plus Gen4 IRU, which also uses this processor, the convertible performs two percent better. The AMD version performed almost four percent better overall.
However, the comparison also shows that the HP Envy x360 15 Intel performs significantly better in the single-core benchmarks than the Envy x360 15 with AMD processor. In the single-core benchmark Cinebench R20, for example, the Core i7-1355U delivers a 22 percent better result. The multicore performance of the model with the AMD chip is higher, as expected. For users who frequently use multi-threaded applications, the AMD variant is therefore recommended, while the Intel variant is better suited for single-threaded applications.
In the Cinebench R15 multi-thread test, the HP Envy x360 15 Intel struggles and drops sharply after the first run. From the thirteenth run, the performance drops slightly again, but then rises again. The Intel chip has a slightly higher temperature of 81 °C (177.8 °F). The AMD version of the model had an average temperature of just under 79 °C (174.2 °F). The average clock speed of the HP Envy x360 15 Intel is 2.6 GHz in the Cinebench R15 loop.

System performance
Compared to an average convertible, the HP Envy x360 15 Intel achieves solid results here. However, the HP Envy x360 15 with AMD processor is almost ten percent better in the PCMark 10 benchmark. The Crossmark benchmark once again shows the better single-core performance of the Intel chip, so that the convertible delivers a 17 percent better result than its AMD counterpart. However, the ThinkBook Plus Gen4 IRU with the identical processor performs better in both the PCMark 10 benchmark and the Crossmark benchmark, even though it is a 14-inch model that actually offers less space for heat dissipation due to the smaller case.
The convertible also does solidly in the AIDA64 benchmark and is able to achieve a 39 percent better result than the HP Envy x360 AMD. However, since the ThinkBook performs better here as well, the Core i7-1355U in the HP Envy x360 15 Intel (2023) cannot fully unleash itself.

DPC Latency
LatencyMon shows significantly fewer DPC problems with the HP Envy x360 15 Intel than with the AMD variant. However, the result is still not ideal and thus the Intel variant is also not well suited for the use of real-time audio software. However, the situation can change at any time with future BIOS and driver updates.

Storage Devices
The storage device installed in the HP Envy x360 15 Intel delivers below-average performance compared to other convertibles. Although the speed should be sufficient for most users and not noticeable in everyday use, the comparison with the AMD variant shows a speed difference of almost 48 percent. It is a pity that HP did not use the same PCIe 4.0 M.2 SSD from Western Digital. Instead, an Intel M.2 SSD is installed here.

Graphics card - Intel Iris Xe vs. Radeon RX Vega
In our HP Envy x360 15 AMD review, we criticized the manufacturer for not including a CPU with the new, more powerful AMD iGPUs. The comparison with this Intel test device shows why this criticism is justified. The Iris XE Graphics G7 96 EUs iGPU of the HP Envy x360 15 Intel Convertible performs a good eleven percent better than the AMD iGPU in the synthetic benchmarks.
However, those with higher demands on the graphics can also choose a version of the HP Envy x360 15 that combines the Intel Core i7-1355U with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050. The convertible will not be a real gamer even with this dedicated graphics card, but the performance is much higher than with the otherwise used iGPUs.

Gaming Performance
In most games, the HP Envy x360 15 Intel performs minimally better than its AMD counterpart. The performance difference is so small that the two devices do not differ noticeably here. However, the comparison with the Lenovo ThinkBook Plus Gen4 IRU, which also has the Core i7-1355U installed, again shows the limits of the Intel processor in the HP Envy x360. The ThinkBook achieves an eight percent better result.
A look at the competitor Lenovo Yoga 7-14ARB G7 also shows what a convertible with the stronger AMD Radeon 680M or 780M is capable of. The iGPU of the Lenovo convertible is 50 per cent better on average.

Emissions - Minimally quieter with Intel
Noise
Like the AMD variant, the HP Envy x360 15 Intel is also fairly quiet under low to medium load. Compared to other convertibles, the test device performs well and does not show any conspicuous noise. The average load noise of 27 dB(A) is even better than that of the AMD counterpart and is only beaten by the HP Envy x360 15 2022. The maximum noise development under load is also slightly lower with the Intel model than with the AMD variant and of the competitors we selected, only the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 14IRU8 is quieter.
This makes the HP Envy x360 15 Intel Convertible ideal for working in a library or office. Since the device does not get particularly loud even under load, even more demanding applications can be used comparatively quietly.
In the test, however, it was noticeable that the device automatically ramps up when placed on the lap and always becomes at least 35 dB(A) loud. Therefor, the usage recommendation applies only to tables or other hard surfaces.
We did not notice any coil whine or other electronic noises.

Temperature
The Intel processor of the HP Envy x360 15 produces a much higher temperature development than we measured in the AMD counterpart of the convertible. At its peak, the right upper side of the notebook heats up to 34 °C (93.2 °F) in idle mode. This means that the average temperature of the Intel variant is a good 4 °C higher than that of the AMD variant. Under load, however, the temperature differences become relatively minor. Here, the peak temperature on the underside is only just under 3 °C higher than on the HP Envy x360 AMD. The average temperature under load is only 0.7 °C higher at 37.8 °C (100 °F). The temperatures thus always remain within an acceptable range and should not be annoying.
(+) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 37.8 °C / 100 F, compared to the average of 35.4 °C / 96 F, ranging from 19.6 to 60 °C for the class Convertible.
(±) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 43.1 °C / 110 F, compared to the average of 36.8 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 29.5 °C / 85 F, compared to the device average of 30.3 °C / 87 F.

Power management - Intel more economical than AMD
Power consumption
The power consumption of the HP Envy x360 Intel averages 6.4 watts in idle mode and is thus a good 1.4 watts lower than that of the AMD variant. However, the Intel model's maximum power consumption of 12.5 watts is significantly higher. The Lenovo ThinkBook Plus Gen4 IRU, which uses the same processor and also has an OLED display, behaves strikingly similar here. Possibly the AMD processor can regulate the energy peaks of the OLED display better.
Under load, the HP Envy x360 Intel consumes an average of 41.7 watts, which is slightly less than the AMD variant. The differences are most obvious in the Witcher 3 Ultra test. Here, the Intel variant consumes only 28.2 watts, while the AMD model draws 41.7 watts. However, the AMD convertible also performs slightly better in the Witcher 3 Ultra test and achieves higher average FPS.
Under maximum load, the HP Envy x360 Intel consumes 64.3 watts, which means that the 65-watt power supply is completely sufficient and there is no discharge.

Battery life
The battery life of the HP Envy x360 Intel is significantly better than that of its AMD counterpart. On average, the battery life is 24 percent better and 16 percent better compared to the overall average of the convertibles. In our WLAN test with adjusted brightness, the battery lasted 9 hours and 36 minutes. At maximum brightness, 6 hours and 27 minutes were still possible. The AMD counterpart only managed 8 hours 47 minutes and 5 hours 43 minutes, respectively.
The HP Envy x360 Intel also achieved good results under load and lasted 2 hours and 53 minutes in our test with BattteryEater, over an hour longer than the AMD model. The value under load is also very good in comparison with the competitors we selected. No other convertible lasted anywhere near as long.

Pros
Cons
Conclusion - Intel variant offers better single-core performance, graphics and battery life, but weaknesses in the display
The HP Envy x360 15 Intel is in a neck-and-neck race with the otherwise identical AMD variant. The processor offers advantages in single-core applications, but lags somewhat behind in multi-core performance. The chassis is identical to the AMD counterpart, so an excellent case is used here that feels high-quality and does not give in at any point.
The display is also the same excellent OLED, but unfortunately the HP Envy x360 Intel does not achieve the very good color space coverage. We suspect that AMD's iGPU drives the screen slightly better than the Intel iGPU. Professional photographers and videographers should therefore go for the AMD variant. Nevertheless, the OLED display is ideal for films and series and the IMAX Enhanced certification shows that the picture is optimized for corresponding IMAX Enhanced films and can display them as intended.
The advantage of the Intel processor, on the other hand, is that two Thunderbolt 4 are installed, which makes the already very good equipment of the AMD model almost perfect. The Thunderbolt ports are both on the same side, but the dedicated full-size SD card reader and HDMI 2.1 port are a welcome compensation.
Probably the biggest advantage of the HP Envy x360 15 Intel is the battery life. The Intel model offers significantly longer runtimes than the AMD variant and very good results, especially under load. The test device with Intel iGPU also beats the HP Envy x360 15 AMD in both the synthetic tests and the gaming tests.
The HP Envy x360 15 Intel Convertible represents a really good overall package and can outperform the AMD variant in many aspects.
The decision for the HP Envy x360 with Intel or AMD processor thus depends entirely on the individual requirements. For a more accurate display and better multi-core performance, the AMD variant is recommended, while the Intel model scores in terms of single-core performance, battery life, power management, connectivity and graphics performance.
