AMD Ryzen 7 5825U debut: HP Envy x360 15 2022 convertible review
The 2022 Envy x360 15 is an evolution of the 2021 model in several ways. The most obvious is its new selection of AMD Zen 3 "Barcelo" CPUs to replace the Zen 2 "Lucienne" options on last year's model. However, there are many more minor changes both inside and out that we will detail in the review below.
Our configuration in review comes equipped with the Ryzen 7 5825U CPU and FHD IPS touchscreen for approximately $900 USD. Lesser options with the Ryzen 5 5625U are available for as low as $650 USD. Intel versions with the Core i5-1235U, i7-1255U, 1440p 120 Hz display, or RTX 2050 graphics also exist all of which are not available on the AMD SKUs.
Competitors include other budget to midrange 15.6-inch convertible laptops like the Dell Inspiron 15 7506 2-in-1, Lenovo Flex series, and the Asus VivoBook Flip series. Users can move up to the pricier Spectre x360 15 for a more luxurious model or move down to the more budget-conscious Pavilion x360 15.

Case — Small Changes
Visually, the chassis is largely the same as on the 2021 model. The easiest way to distinguish between the older and newer models is to look closely at the ports and keyboard. HP has smartly removed the proprietary barrel AC adapter port for USB-C charging only on the 2022 model. Even so, we would have loved to see additional color options.
In terms of dimensions and weight, the model is nearly identical to the Pavilion x360 15 despite its higher quality materials and build. Alternatives like the Samsung Galaxy Book Pro 360 15 or LG Gram 15 are significantly lighter but more expensive.
Connectivity — No More Proprietary Barrel AC Adapter
The model includes all the data ports from the 2021 Envy x360 15 plus one additional USB-A port for a total of four. Indeed, the system has more USB ports than most other 15.6-inch convertibles.
The two USB-C ports are along the right edge meaning charging must be done on this side of the laptop. Splitting the two USB-C ports along the left and righthand sides of the laptop would have been preferable.
SD Card Reader
SD card performance has not changed from last year's model. Moving 1 GB of pictures from our UHS-II test card to desktop takes about 14 seconds.

Communication — Now With Wi-Fi 6E
WLAN has been upgraded from the AX200 Wi-Fi 6 to the newer AX211 for Wi-Fi 6E connectivity. We experienced stable transfer rates when paired to our 6 GHz network. However, keep in mind that Wi-Fi 6E isn't necessarily faster than regular Wi-Fi 6 when it comes to real-world transfer rates.

Webcam — 5 MP Standard
HP has upgraded the webcam from 1 MP to 5 MP on this latest 2022 revision for a massive boost in picture quality. In fact, most newer HP models from the Envy, Spectre, and Elite families are beginning to sport the same 5 MP camera while most other OEMs are still using 1 or 2 MP sensors.
Both IR and a webcam shutter are present for Hello support and privacy, respectively, whereas the older model would lack IR support.
Maintenance — More User-Friendly
The bottom panel is now easier to remove as there are no more screws hidden underneath the rubber feet as demonstrated by the official HP disassembly video here. Users have access to the single M.2 2280 SSD slot and two SODIMM slots underneath the aluminum shielding. There are several other changes to the motherboard and positioning of the modules between the 2021 and 2022 models as shown by the images below.
Accessories and Warranty
There are no extras in the retail box beyond the AC adapter and paperwork which is a shame because many of the product shots show the active stylus with the laptop. The pen costs an extra $35 to $50 USD online.
The standard one-year limited warranty applies if purchased in the US.
Input Devices — New Emoji Key
Keyboard and Touchpad
There are no physical changes to the keyboard or clickpad despite all the changes to the motherboard, port positioning, and display options. Key feedback is generally firmer than on competing models like the Lenovo IdeaPad while being softer than the keys on the LG Gram 15 or Spectre series.
Two relatively minor changes worth mentioning are the new emoji and System Event Utility hotkeys on the first row of the keyboard. The former launches an emoji and GIF popup window while the latter is a quick launch button for HP Command Center, Omen Gaming Hub, myHP, and Palette. These keys are also being implemented on most newer HP models including the latest Envy 16 and Pavilion models.
Display — Limited Color Reproduction
Four display options are available:
- 1080p touchscreen IPS, 60 Hz, 60% sRGB, 250 nits
- 1080p touchscreen IPS, 60 Hz, 100% sRGB, 400 nits
- 1080p touchscreen OLED, 60 Hz, 100% DCI-P3, 400 nits
- 1440p touchscreen IPS, 120 Hz, 100% sRGB, 300 nits
Our measurements below reflect only the bold IPS configuration while the 1440p120 panel is a new addition that was not available on last year's Envy x360 15. Unfortunately, the IPS panel on the 2022 model is a downgrade from the IPS panel on the 2021 model in terms of color reproduction (100% vs. 59% sRGB coverage). You'll have to pay up for the pricier OLED or IPS panels if you want full sRGB coverage.
Image quality is otherwise good with minimal graininess issues for a clean picture. It's just too bad that our base display option is closer in quality to what you'd see on a cheaper Pavilion 15 than a more expensive Spectre model.

The display is not calibrated out of the box unlike on most pricier Spectre or EliteBook models. Nonetheless, average grayscale and color DeltaE values are still decent at 2.2 and 5.16, respectively. Colors improve after calibration as shown by our CalMAN screenshots below, but colors at higher saturation levels are stuck at their respective levels due to the narrow sRGB color space reproduction mentioned above.

The 300-nit maximum brightness is about average for most midrange 15.6-inch multimedia laptops. Pricier models like the XPS 15 or MacBook Pro series can reach 500 nits or greater for better outdoor visibility. Expect a lot of glare from the glossy display if using the Envy x360 15 outdoors.
Performance — Zen 3 Standard
Testing Conditions
We set our unit to Performance mode via both Windows and HP Command Center prior to running any benchmarks below. Owners should become familiar with the Radeon and HP Command Center applications as they control key aspects of the laptop. For example, AMD Vari-Bright is enabled by default which reduces maximum brightness if running on battery power. We recommend disabling Vari-Bright to improve outdoor visibility.
Processor
The Ryzen 7 5825U carries the same number of cores as on the older Ryzen 7 5700U, but it benefits from all the optimizations of the Zen 3 platform. Raw performance is approximately 15 to 25 percent faster in both single- and multi-threaded loads while targeting the same 37 to 48 W range. Multi-thread performance is comparable to the 12th gen Core i7-1260P while single-thread performance is closer to the last generation Core i7-1165G7. The Intel Core i5-1235U or i7-1255U configurations are slower than our Ryzen 7 5825U, but users get Thunderbolt, faster integrated graphics, and discrete Nvidia graphics options in return.
Performance sustainability is good even if the initial Boost clock rates are very short.

A midrange Samsung PM991 PCIe3 x4 NVMe SSD is included with our test unit. Sequential read rates are decent at about 2600 MB/s, but write rates are only about half as fast. The drive in our unit would exhibit slight performance throttling when running DiskSpd in a loop as shown by our graph below where read rates would drop from 2600 MB/s to about 2200 MB/s.

GPU Performance — Radeon RX Vega Is Getting Old
While there are notable CPU gains between the Ryzen 7 5700U and 5825U, their integrated GPUs are remain identical. Graphics performance is faster than the old UHD Graphics 620 but well behind the Iris Xe series. It's too bad that the model doesn't offer any Ryzen 7 6800U SKUs as the the newer Radeon 680M can offer over two times the performance of our aging Radeon RX Vega 8.

System Noise — Quiet Most Of The Time
The system is very quiet under most low to medium loads. When running the first benchmark scene of 3DMark 06, for example, fan noise would top out at just 23.3 dB(A) against a silent background of 22.7 dB(A) to be barely audible in most conditions. The noise hovers around the 24 dB(A) range when browsing or video streaming to be quieter than many competitors.
If under heavier loads, however, fan noise increases quickly to as high as 43 dB(A) which is close to the maximums we recorded on the Asus ZenBook Flip 15 Q539ZD or Samsung Galaxy Book Pro 360 15.

Temperature
Surface temperatures are always warmer on the right half than the left of the chassis due to the positioning of the processor inside. Hot spots can reach up to 38 C on the top and bottom which is cooler than what we recorded on the thinner Galaxy Book Pro 360 15 where hot sptos can reach over 46 C under similar loads. The HP model never becomes uncomfortably warm to the touch.
(+) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 36.2 °C / 97 F, compared to the average of 35.3 °C / 96 F, ranging from 19.6 to 55.7 °C for the class Convertible.
(+) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 37.8 °C / 100 F, compared to the average of 36.8 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 24.3 °C / 76 F, compared to the device average of 30.2 °C / 86 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 27.6 °C / 81.7 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(±) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 28.1 °C / 82.6 F (+0.5 °C / 0.9 F).

Stress Test
When running Prime95 to stress the CPU, clock rates and board power draw would spike to 4.1 GHz and 48 W, respectively, lasting for only a few seconds. Clock rates and power draw would eventually stabilize at 3.5 GHz and 37 W in order to maintain a reasonable core temperature of 77 C. Running this same test on last year's model with the Ryzen 7 5700U would result in slower stable clock rates and similar temperatures of 3.1 GHz and 78 C, respectively. Thus, the newer model is able to run faster without being hotter.
Running Witcher 3 would result in a stable GPU clock rate and temperature of 1994 MHz and 57 C, respectively, compared to 69 C on last year's model.
Running on battery power limits performance. A 3DMark 11 test on batteries would return Physics and Graphics scores 10037 and 5488 points, respectively, compared to 12620 and 5994 points when on mains.

Energy Management — Good CPU Performance-Per-Watt
Power Consumption
Idling on desktop consumes between 4 W and 8 W depending on the power profile and brightness setting. Higher loads like games would demand between 41 W and 47 W to be very similar to what we recorded on last year's model. The Iris Xe-powered LG Gram 15Z90P is able to consume less energy while providing more graphics performance than our AMD-powered Envy to show poorer performance-per-watt for Radeon.
We're able to record a maximum draw of 65 W from the small (~9.7 x 5.5 x 2.2 cm) 65 W AC adapter when the CPU is at 100 percent utilization. This draw is only temporary as shown in the screenshots below due to thermal limitations. The battery will still recharge when under such loads albeit at a slower rate.

Battery Life
Runtimes are very close to what we recorded on last year's Envy x360 15 at about 10 hours of real-world browsing from a full charge. Charging from empty to full capacity takes about 90 minutes. Battery capacity is relatively small for a 15-inch form factor, but battery life is still very good nonetheless.

Verdict — Get The Higher Display Option If Possible
For the 2022 refresh, HP could have just swapped out the Zen 2 CPU options for Zen 3 and then called it a day. However, the manufacturer went the extra mile by tweaking various parts of the design and internals that all add up to a much better refresh than originally anticipated. For example, HP didn't have to rework the screws on the bottom to make the system easier to service, but they took the feedback to heart and actually made it work. Fine details and fixes like that can mean all the difference between an indifference or a recommendation.
Though technically a refresh of last year's model, the 2022 Envy x360 15 brings a lot more to the table with its handful of under-the-hood upgrades and changes.
Other upgrades include a much sharper 5 MP webcam with IR, more USB ports, 6 GHz Wi-Fi, and a faster CPU without impacting temperatures or battery life. Graphics performance remains flat, but users have the option to upgrade to a GeForce RTX 2050 if they choose an Intel SKU.
Something to avoid on this year's model is the low-end 250-nit IPS display option like the one on our review unit. Its colors are significantly worse than the next step up which offers full sRGB coverage and a brighter backlight. The base IPS panel is more fit for cheaper models like the Pavilion rather than a midrange model like our Envy.
Price and Availability
The 2022 Envy x360 15 is now shipping at Best Buy and HP.com in both AMD and Intel SKUs starting at $650 USD. Our exact configuration retails for $900 while the highest-end Intel Core i7 version retails for $1280.
