HP Omen 17 (2022) gaming laptop in review: Stylish case and hardware with lots of potential
For several years, HP has been successfully marketing the Omen series as strong gaming laptops with an appealing design and excellent build quality. However, the manufacturer also charges quite high prices. Buyers currently have to fork out over 2,000 Euros (~US$ 2000) for the current Omen 17.
A selection of strong hardware components in the HP Omen 17 ensures very strong performance in the processor benchmarks. The 2022 version of the gaming laptop now makes use of an Intel Core i7-12700H from the latest processor generation, which is accompanied by 16 GB DDR5 RAM and a 1 TB NVMe SSD from Western Digital. The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Ti in our second review sample also performs well. Our first review sample had to be replaced by HP due to a graphics card defect. Overall, the 17-inch Omen often outperforms the strong HP Omen 16 with the same hardware.
Other comparable gamers are the MSI Vector GP76 12UGS, the Asus TUF Gaming F17 and the much cheaper Acer Nitro 5 with an AMD processor.

Case - Unchanged in design
Black plastic and some black-painted metal are used for the case of the HP Omen. The Omen logo on the display lid is the only eye-catching spot of color. Otherwise, the laptop's design has been kept simple. Straight lines with few decorations make up the exterior of the gaming notebook. Nothing has changed in the design since last year. Even the otherwise typical large openings for fans are inconspicuous here. HP manages to make the laptop look much less larger than it is thanks to Swiss edges and other optical tricks. In return, it almost seems to hover above the surface.
When opened, a decent keyboard with switchable RGB lighting is revealed. Above this is an interesting triangle pattern, which seems to have no function at all. Otherwise, a large O17 lettering catches our attention. The laptop stands securely on large rubber feet on the underside.
The display lid and base underside are made of plastic. The upper side of the notebook with the keyboard and touchpad is made of metal. A positive aspect here is that the palm rests remain cool even under heavy load. Despite its size, the screen can be opened up to 150° with one hand. HP has done a good job with the hinges because the screen position remains stable, even when the laptop is subject to shaking.
The size and weight of the HP notebook are typical for gaming laptops. Together, the laptop and power adapter weigh more than 4 kg. At best, it looks a little slimmer than many of its rivals.
Equipment - All connections on the sides
The connectivity on HP's gaming laptop is relatively normal for gamers, although an SD card reader with good speed surprised us here. All ports are located on the sides of the notebook. However, if you connect a wired mouse or other hardware on the right side, you should be careful not to block the ventilation slot.
SD Card Reader
The AV PRO microSD 128 GB V60 reference card reaches significantly higher transfer speeds on many laptops. But it is nonetheless possible to work with a read rate of more than 100 MB/s.

Communication
The HP Omen 17 uses the MediaTek MT7921 for wireless communication. This module supports WLAN 6 and Bluetooth 5.2. In combination with the Netgear Nighthawk AX12, the rates for data transmission are unfortunately not as high as those of other laptops. Then again, above 880 MBit/s in receive and transmit direction is not a bad rate either. The positioning of the WLAN module may become problematic in the long run, as it is located under the heatpipes between the cooler and the graphics chip. It is even fixed there with an adhesive pad, so it could get quite warm during use. In the long run, this may also cause connection problems.
Webcam
Even though the image quality of the built-in camera is sharp and rich in contrast in good ambient light, the webcam is hardly suitable for streamers. In darker rooms, it hardly stands a chance of delivering reasonably good image quality.
Security
Users won't find anything more than the security features of the Intel Core i7, such as TPM 2.0 and SecureBoot, in this gaming notebook.
Accessories
Scope of delivery only includes the usual documents and the large 350 W power adapter.
Maintenance
The HP Omen 17 is relatively easy to open and there are many modular components inside. A free NVMe SSD slot is available here. A corresponding heat spreader and a thermal pad have already been pre-installed. However, the replacement of the WLAN module may be problematic. As previously mentioned, it is located underneath the heatpipes and is held in place by an adhesive pad.
Warranty
HP offers a 24-month warranty for the HP Omen 17 in Europe. This may differ in other regions, so you should check with your supplier before buying.
Input Devices - RGB keyboard
Keyboard
While a 17-inch laptop has room for a full keyboard, HP has omitted the Numpad here to make more room for the arrow keys and some macro keys (P1 to P6) and to give the key blocks good spacing. The RGB-illuminated keyboard is very haptically pleasing thanks to a clear key travel of over one millimeter and crisp feedback. For Europeans, who are used to the ISO layout, the ANSI layout of the keyboard might be quite unusual. On the other hand, gamers who mainly use mechanical keyboards should quickly feel at home here.
The WASD keys, among others, can be visually highlighted with the four controllable areas of the RGB lighting. Gamers are likely to be pleased about this. The keyboard's illumination and the assignment of the macro keys can be controlled via the Omen Center. Static and dynamic modes are available for the lighting. Another interesting aspect is that the color and brightness of the keyboard illumination can be adjusted to the screen content. This results in an effect that is somewhat reminiscent of the Ambilight system. This function is only available in Light Studio.
Touchpad
The clickpad responds to every input with a rich clicking sound. It is precise and responsive. The size and position of the clickpad are also pleasing.
Display - 144 Hz but not particularly responsive
The IPS-grade display of the HP Omen 17, with Full HD resolution and a brightness level of just 302 cd/m², falls more in the middle class. Thanks to the matte surface, there are at least no reflections that would otherwise disturb the gaming experience. We determined the contrast ratio to be only 892:1. The black value is relatively high at 0.36 cd/m².
No brightness differences on the display are visible to the naked eye. Only the camera can detect clear halos on the screen, albeit only after long exposure.
The screen's response times do not quite correspond to what we expect from a gaming laptop. Demanding gamers in particular are likely to notice clear streaks during rapid image changes.
However, competing gaming laptops do not fare any better here. Both the Asus TUF Gaming and the Acer Nitro 5 use screens in their 17-inch variants that mostly have significantly worse rates.

* ... smaller is better
The displayable color space of the HP Omen 17 is not exactly high at only 87.46% sRGB. This may be sufficient for games and office applications, but artists might want more.
Calibrated, the screen of the HP Omen 17 shows a fairly small color deviation. If you have the same configuration, you can reduce the color deviations considerably using the color profile in the info box. The color deviation falls from a deltaE 6.41 to 1.93, which is below a perceptible value.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)
Screen flickering / PWM detected | 100 Hz | ≤ 50 % brightness setting | |
The display backlight flickers at 100 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 50 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting. The frequency of 100 Hz is very low, so the flickering may cause eyestrain and headaches after extended use. In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 17204 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured. |
The display's backlight is somewhat weak in direct sunlight. But it is still possible to work with the laptop in bright sunshine with the right viewing angle.
The screen of the gaming laptop is not particularly stable in terms of viewing angles. Although there are no significant color deviations at steeper viewing angles, there are strong changes in perceptible brightness.
Performance - HP laptop with slightly above-average graphics performance
The hardware of the HP Omen 17 is clearly designed for PC gaming. The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Ti and the Intel Core i7 12700H ensure strong performance here. The processor is supported by 16 GB of DDR5 working memory. The NVMe SSD from Western Digital is also large enough to hold a few games with 1 TB.
Testing Conditions
The power control of the HP Omen 17 has been kept relatively plain, but can also be strongly customized. the profile Balanced was selected for the benchmarks in the areas of system performance, CPU performance, DPC latencies and SSD performance. Tests on GPU performance and gaming were carried out in Performance mode. Different performance modes were also tested for the volume and energy measurements.
In Balanced- and Performance mode, the CPU's boost power is 100 watts and that of the GPU 135 watts. In Balanced mode, the processor operates constantly at around 45 watts, and in Performance mode at around 75 watts.
Processor
The Intel Core i7-12700H belongs to the high-end chips of the current Alder Lake generation, consisting of six performance and eight efficiency cores for a total of 20 threads. In Performance mode, PL1, at 75 watts, is well above the usual values of 45 watts. In testing, with 25 runs of the Cinebench R15 benchmark, the log analysis shows clearly different results for the various performance profiles and battery mode. The i7 manages four runs in a row on Boost power (as long as Performance mode is activated) before rapidly falling to 75 watts of continuous output. Balanced mode allows for a sustained output of 45 watts, meaning that Performance mode achieves 490 points more. PL1 and PL2 are severely restricted in battery mode. Here the processor only has 35 and 25 watts at its disposal, respectively.

Storage Devices
The WDC PC SN810 1TB is a very fast NVMe SSD. In the memory benchmarks, however, its performance is significantly behind the top models in our benchmark table for SSDs und HDDs. The SSDs of the comparison devices also perform better here. On the other hand, the access times and transfer rates of the NVMe SSD in the HP Omen 17 are excellent. Unfortunately, the data transfer rates of the NVMe SSD drop keep collapsing after a certain time under long-term load (without the SSD's sensors indicating overheating). We also observed the same behavior in the HP Omen 16.
