Acer Aspire Vero AV14 laptop review: Striking chassis made of recycled materials

The Acer Aspire Vero AV14-51 is a 14-inch office laptop whose main focus is neither on specs nor performance – though it is not lacking in the latter thanks to the Core i7-1255U processor (Alder Lake) inside. Instead, Acer is putting the spotlight on sustainability: the laptop is partially made of recycled plastic, and its packaging of recycled paper. What's more, the company promises a product that is durable, serviceable and upgradable. The Vero AV14 is competing with devices such as the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 Pro 14ITL6, the HP Envy 14 and the Dell Inspiron 14 5425.

Case & specifications - Chassis made of recycled plastic
The somewhat angular shape looks great: you can definitely describe the laptop as stylish. The dark blue ("Mariana Blue") also suits the device very well. It is not simply a plain blue; there are many brighter particles mixed into the plastic, which resemble paint splatter and lend the laptop a more playful look.
Our review unit doesn't have any workmanship issues. The base section and lid can be twisted slightly, but the amount of flex is just acceptable. The bottom cover is pretty easy to remove. Once it is off, you'll have access to the battery (held in place with screws rather than adhesive) and the rest of the internals.
The laptop features two USB-A ports (2x USB 3.2 Gen 2) and a USB-C port (Thunderbolt 4, Power Delivery and DisplayPort). It supports up to two external monitors (1x DP, 1x HDMI), but lacks a memory card reader. The built-in webcam (2.1MP, max. resolution of 1,920 x 1,080) doesn't have a mechanical shutter.
Under optimal conditions (no other Wi-Fi devices nearby, short distance between laptop and server PC), the Aspire Vero AV14 delivered excellent Wi-Fi transfer speeds during our testing.

Input devices - The Aspire features a backlit keyboard
The keys on the backlit chiclet keyboard (two brightness levels) have short travel and a distinct actuation point. The keyboard flexes slightly when you're typing on it, but this didn't prove to be bothersome. Overall, the keyboard on the Acer Aspire Vero is fit for everyday use. The clickpad (approx. 10.5 x 6.5 cm, or 4.1 x 2.6") supports multi-touch, and its smooth surface allows fingers to slide across effortlessly. It has short travel and produces a crisp click.
Note: Acer was only able to send us a model with the US International keyboard layout.
Display - Featuring a great FHD panel
The matt 14-inch display (1,920 x 1,080) is quite impressive as a whole. Its max brightness (308.2 cd/m²) and contrast (1,935:1) are high enough to be considered good (>300 cd/m² and >1,000:1 respectively). Another positive thing is that the panel doesn't exhibit PWM flicker at any brightness settings. That said, competing laptops such as the IdeaPad 5 Pro and Envy 14 both have brighter screens on board.

The display is already very colour-accurate right out of the box. Its colour difference of 1.31 is clearly within the desirable range (Delta E lower than 3). After calibration, we managed to reduce the colour difference to 0.94 and make the greyscale look more balanced. The display is able to fully cover the sRGB gamut (99%), but not AdobeRGB (69%) and DCI-P3 (68%) – just like the screens on the IdeaPad 5 Pro and the Envy 14.

Performance - Alder Lake packs lots of oomph
The Acer Aspire Vero AV14-51 is a portable office laptop that has enough power to handle office and Internet applications as well as basic games. The models available currently are priced at around €1,000 (US$1,060). The variant right here is not yet listed at the time of writing this review. But based on its specification, the device is expected to cost between €1,000 and €1,100 (US$1,060 and US$1,167).
Test conditions
The laptop offers four performance profiles specified by the manufacturer: Performance, Balanced, Eco and Eco+ modes. You can switch between them using the preinstalled VeroSense software. Performance-wise, the only differences between the profiles lie with the CPU – even then, the changes are very minute. We used "Performance mode" for our benchmarks and "Eco mode" for our battery life test. For some reason, "Eco+ mode" wasn't usable on our review unit.

Power Limit 1 | 30 watts | 28 watts | 25 watts |
Power Limit 2 | 55 watts | 55 watts | 55 watts |
Processor
The Core i7-1255U processor (Alder Lake) consists of two performance cores (hyperthreading, 1.7 to 4.7 GHz) and eight efficiency cores (no hyperthreading, 1.2 to 3.5 GHz), giving a total of ten logical CPU cores.
The CPU ran at high clock speeds during the multi-thread test in Cinebench R15 (P-cores: 4.1 GHz, E-cores: 3.1 GHz). The same also applies to the single-thread test (P-cores: 4.1 to 4.7 GHz, E-cores: 1.5 to 3.5 GHz). But the clock speeds are lower on battery power. In general, the Core i7 delivered above average benchmark results.
The CPU was only able to maintain high clock speeds in the first run of the CB15 loop test. Subsequently, the CPU core speeds dropped down to the middle of the Turbo frequency range.

System performance
The system runs smoothly and can handle office and Internet applications as well as gaming at low settings. It also delivered excellent results in PCMark. The onboard RAM is capable of transfer rates on par with typical LPDDR4-4266 memory. Unfortunately, it can't be upgraded because there are no RAM slots.

Mass storage
Acer has equipped the Vero AV14 with a PCIe 4.0 SSD (M.2 2280) made by Micron. The drive has a capacity of 1 TB and delivers superb transfer speeds. However, its performance dropped sharply due to thermal throttling after running DiskSpd in a loop for some time.

Graphics card
As shown by our Witcher 3 test, the integrated Iris Xe Graphics G7 can run at full speed (1,250 MHz) under sustained load. Even though the hardware packs enough power to run quite a number of games smoothly at low to medium settings, the Aspire Vero is definitely not a gaming laptop. Both the 3DMark results and in-game frame rates are above what the Iris Xe iGPU is capable of on average.

Emissions & power usage - Vero AV14 provides excellent battery life
Noise emissions
In everyday use (office and Internet applications), the laptop's fan is often at a standstill, and the device is completely silent. The fan spins up at moderate to high load and can emit up to 44 dB(A) of noise. One downside is that the fan produces a whistling noise whose intensity increase with speed. There is also an electronic rattling sound coming from within the laptop, but it is only audible in an absolutely silent environment.

Temperature
On average, the notebook doesn't get especially warm under load. During our testing, chassis temperatures only exceeded 50°C (122°F) at one measuring point under max load. The device doesn't have any issues with heat in day-to-day use (office work, Internet).
Our stress test (running Prime95 and FurMark concurrently for a prolonged period) is designed to replicate an extreme scenario for assessing the system's stability. At the start of the test, the CPU ran at moderate clock speeds (P-cores: 3.2 GHz, E-cores: 2.2 GHz) while the GPU operated at 1,250 MHz. Both the GPU and CPU ran slower as the test went on.
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 43.1 °C / 110 F, compared to the average of 34.3 °C / 94 F, ranging from 21.2 to 62.5 °C for the class Office.
(-) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 54 °C / 129 F, compared to the average of 36.8 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 25.2 °C / 77 F, compared to the device average of 29.5 °C / 85 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 28.9 °C / 84 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(±) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 27.6 °C / 81.7 F (-1.3 °C / -2.3 F).

Power consumption
The laptop's power consumption is fairly normal for the hardware inside. Power usage decreased over the course of the stress test due to reduced CPU and GPU clock speeds. The included USB-C adapter (rated at 65 watts) delivers sufficient power to the laptop.

Battery life
Our Wi-Fi test simulates real-life use and involves visiting websites with the help of a script. The Vero AV14 manage to last a hugely impressive 15hr 47min during the test. None of the competitors can keep up with the Acer laptop despite having similar battery capacity.

Cons
Verdict - Ultrabook with a focus on recycling
Acer has drummed up a great deal of hype about the recycled plastic chassis, but the company isn’t quite consistent in the way it approaches the subject of sustainability by giving the laptop soldered RAM. Because there are no RAM slots, it is impossible to increase the amount of memory in the device. The price is also fairly high for a laptop made of used plastic. Setting these points aside, though, the 14-inch notebook is definitely an impressive piece of hardware.
The Aspire Vero AV14-51 illustrates Acer's inconsistent sustainability effort.
Thanks to the Core i7-1255U CPU and 16 GB of onboard memory (LPDDR4-4266), the laptop is able to handle office and internet applications as well as less-demanding games. The device generally doesn’t have any issues with heat and noise. It's a shame that the fan makes a soft but irritating whistling noise whose intensity increases with fan speed.
The Aspire Vero AV14 can last roughly 16 hours on a single charge when used to browse the web over Wi-Fi – an excellent showing. You can use a USB-C adapter to charge the device. Alternatively, there is also a power port for connecting a proprietary Acer power adapter. This way, users can free up the USB-C port (Thunderbolt 4) for other things, such as a docking station or an external GPU.
The matt 14-inch display (FHD, IPS) has exceptional contrast, brightness and colour reproduction. Its colour coverage (sRGB: 100%) rivals that of competing products. In addition, the laptop also has a backlit keyboard and comes with a two-year warranty in Europe (warranty conditions may vary by country).
An alternative to the Vero AV14 is the Dell Inspiron 14 5425. Despite offering a slightly shorter battery life, the Inspiron sports a display with a more work-friendly 16:10 aspect ratio.
Price and availability
The review unit sent to us isn't intended for the German market. However, you can still get a variant with a 512 GB SSD (but otherwise identical) from Notebooksbilliger.de at a price of €999. In the US, a model with the same specs can be found on Acer's website for US$899. As for the UK market, an AV14 model with 512 GB of storage will set you back around £899.
