LG Gram 16-inch 2-in-1 review - Weight is no longer a unique selling point
LG Gram is a byword for super light laptops like no other brand. After all, this was the manufacturer who was the first to slim down a fully-fledged 14-inch laptop to under a kilogram. However, the Gram range no longer just covers typical laptops but also 2-in-1 devices such as the LG Gram 2-in-1. But, at 1,476 g, this 2-in-1 laptop is considerably heavier than its 16-inch counterpart without the 360° hinge. We reviewed that device with a 12th-generation Intel processor. As well as the increased weight of around 200 grams, some users could find the 2-in-1 machine's reflective display surface annoying.
However, on the plus side, there is an accurate touchscreen and a Wacom AES 2.0 stylus, neither of which come with the normal LG Gram laptops. Our review device is equipped with an Intel Core i7-1360P. This can be considered more of a refresh than a true update to its predecessor which means we should only expect a marginal increase in performance due to, among other things, the slightly higher PL1 and PL2 values.
We can find some interesting 16-inch devices among the 2-in-1 laptops in our database. But, none are as light as the LG Gram 2-in-1. At around 1.7 kg, only the Samsung Galaxy Book3 Pro 360 is well under the 2 kg limit and has the best display in the comparison. However, the Lenovo Yoga 7i Gen 8 and Dell Inspiron 16 7635 stand out with their high-end Intel and AMD U-series processors. Another comparison model is the 2021 Gram 2-in-1.

Case & features - As you were
LG has put the cosmetics to one side and has delivered an unchanged LG Gram 2-in-1. The port locations also remain as they were in 2021. The review of the predecessor provides nearly every bit of important information concerning the case.
The Gram only weighs 1.5 kg but this also means not much material is left to give the 2-in-1 some stability. You quickly notice that the base can be twisted and bent slightly and that this could result in accidental touchpad inputs. This makes it difficult to use the 2-in-1 on your lap or when lying on the sofa. Placed on a solid surface, the base unit also yields somewhat and, in addition, the display hardly seems stable. Having said that, the low weight shows its positive side as soon as you use the 2-in-1 as a tablet. Then is considerably easier to handle than the heavy competition. Ultimately, the device doesn't come across as delicate meaning you can trust it to cope with the rigours of everyday life.
The performance of the Intel AX 211 Wi-Fi module and the integrated face recognition-capable FullHD webcam is good, if not outstanding. The installed microSD card reader is only connected to the system via USB 2.0 with which our Angelbird AV Pro SD microSD was unable to achieve any transfer speeds worth mentioning.

Maintenance is a touchy subject because the eight screws which secure the base are hidden by either the glued stand or covers. In addition, two different lengths of PH0 screws have been used. Beneath the base cover, which is also secured by numerous plastic clips, we are confronted with a slightly less than maintenance-friendly mainboard. The Wi-Fi module and the 16 GB RAM chips are soldered. A ray of hope is provided by the availability of a second M.2 SSD slot.
Input devices - With a stylus
Compared to other LG laptops, we did not find any noticeable differences when it came to the LG Gram 2-in-1's backlit keyboard. At around 1.1 mm, the key travel is short and the haptic feedback is rather subtle. The 13 x 8 cm touchpad works wonderfully well on firm surfaces but encounters difficulties when the device is placed on a soft surface. At times, the touchscreen is better suited to input with the touchpad switched off via the key combination Fn+F5. The display responds to up to ten fingers and offers low latencies. What is nice to see is that the display's coating is very smudge-resistant meaning fingerprints don't quickly multiply on the high-resolution display.
The 2-in-1 also comes with a stylus which is powered by a AAAA battery and offers 4,096 pressure sensitivity levels and a similarly finely graduated tilt detection. We observed that the display is relatively well-calibrated for stylus input and that the input point is mostly located directly beneath the stylus tip.
Display - High resolution and DisplayP3 coverage like its predecessor
LG hasn't made any noticeable changes to the display in the last two years. We're still dealing with an LP160WQ1 panel which offers almost full DisplayP3 coverage but only a maximum brightness of around 330 cd/m². The IPS panel isn't especially bright with the OLED-equipped Galaxy Book3 Pro 360 and ExpertBook B5 Flip cutting a significantly better figure.

* ... smaller is better
Out of the box, the LG Gram 2-in-1 comes with a noticeable blue tint and an averagely-calibrated display. Our ICC profile reduces the color deviation significantly and eliminates the display's slight blue tint. With an average ΔΕ of 1.15 after calibration, cinephiles can enjoy movies in almost completely covered DisplayP3 color space.

While the display's color stability has an extremely positive effect on the device's use as a tablet, it's mainly the LG Gram panel's low brightness we have to criticise. Combined with its reflective surface, this makes outdoor use difficult. On top of that, a rainbow effect is present under direct sunlight.
Performance - Significantly more powerful thanks to the 13th generation Intel Core i7
The LG Gram 2-in-1 is currently only available in our review configuration with an Intel Core i7-1360P, 16 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 1 TB of NVMe nass storage. In addition, last year's version is still available and comes with an Intel Core i7-1260P. This model completely does without a dGPU meaning this 2-in-1 is only suitable for light gaming at best. Apart from that, the Core i7 is a powerful CPU that appears to be ideally suited to all types of media consumption as well as office applications.
Test conditions
The LG Smart Assistant offers four different cooling modes which do not affect the basic PL1 and PL2 settings but cause the TDP to more or less drop significantly in the long term. The boost is performed at a powerful 64 watts. In our benchmark tests, we applied the high-performance mode and although the target continuous performance sat at 28 watts, the 2-in-1's cooling performance quickly became insufficient. In our stress test with Prime95 and Furmark, the dynamic PL1 dropped to just 23 watts within six minutes. In the other cooling modes, it even drops to 10 watts.
Processor
The Intel Core i7-1360P houses four P and eight E cores meaning 16 threads are at work. The LG Gram has one of the most powerful boosts in the comparison field and this also makes itself noticeable in many processor benchmarks. In addition, the continuous output of 23 watts is quite high which means the processor also delivers comparatively high scores in our Cinebench R1 loop.
What is striking is that the 13th-generation Intel processor hardly has any advantages compared to its 12th-generation counterpart. In particular, in benchmarks, the Asus ExpertBook B5 Flip is at minimum on par with the LG Gram's newer processor. We were at least able to attest to lower power consumption since the i7-1260P in the ExpertBook operates at a PL1 of 32 watts and a PL2 of 64 watts. However, in our benchmarks, the processor's boost performance is tested multiple times.

System performance
The scores achieved by the LG Gram in PCMark 10 and CrossMark testify to a balanced system that is capable of handling modern, everyday digital tasks such as image editing and light video editing as well as a bit of gaming. Nevertheless, not too much should be asked of a 2-in-1 that comes without a dGPU.
The 2-in-1 laptop copes with surfing the internet as well as streaming in 4K, even in silent mode. If anything, it's actually the generous 16 GB of RAM that holds the laptop back because many open browser tabs or applications can fill it up surprisingly quickly.

DPC latencies
When it comes to the LG Gram 2-in-1's DPC latencies, in our test, LatencyMon detected very high values and issued a warning notification. Real-time audio processing or other inputs could be disrupted here. At the time of reviewing, we carried out the test multiple times using up-to-date drivers. Updates could lead to significant improvements but our results remained fairly stable.

Mass storage
The speedy Samsung PM9A1 NVMe SSD can also be found in this laptop and delivers high transfer speeds which are considerably better than those offered by the competition. In our DiskSpd loop, we observed small dips in the read speed. Despite this, it would be wrong to talk of thermal throttling. In addition, the LG Gram 2-in-1's storage can be expanded thanks to a second M.2 slot.

Graphics card
When it comes to the LG Gram 2-in-1's graphics output, we put our trust in the Intel Core i7-1360P's inner qualities. This one comes with an Iris Xe with 96 EUs. From the hardware side, the graphics chip hasn't had any updates since the Intel Tiger Lake but still manages quite decent 3D performance thanks to updated drivers. The chip has sufficient power to play most current games in FullHD and on the lowest quality settings.
Anyone on the hunt for additional 3D performance should take a look at the Asus ExpertBook B5 Flip. At least this device comes with an Intel Arc A350M. In the meantime, this card is better than its reputation, topping our benchmark results from the start of the year, in terms of gaming.

Noise emissions
The LG Gram 2-in-1 normally runs in either silent or normal cooling modes without any performance loss to speak of. The processor's powerful boost performance is sufficient in order to process tasks quickly. At just over 30 dB(A), the laptop is almost inaudible.
The 2-in-1's fan is only maxed out when gaming or undertaking long-term tasks. Even then, at 41 dB(A), the LG Gram still can't be considered unpleasantly loud.
We occasionally heard a clicking noise coming from our review unit as soon as the fan kicked in. However, since this is an IFA trade fair device, damage or contamination on or in the cooling system cannot be ruled out.

Temperature
For the best part, the LG Gram 2-in-1 also remains pleasantly cool, even under load. But, our heat imaging camera found surprisingly hot spots on both the top and bottom sides of the device. Something which was also confirmed by a thermometer. Although the area on the top was 56 °C in the stress test, it's smaller than a fingertip
During the stress test and related energy measurements, we noticed a small thing about the device that left us a touch annoyed. The included power adapter provides the 360°-hinged laptop with a maximum of 64 watts. However, this also corresponds to the processor's boost performance meaning the laptop has to use its battery to absorb the load peaks.
(-) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 55 °C / 131 F, compared to the average of 35.3 °C / 96 F, ranging from 19.6 to 55.7 °C for the class Convertible.
(-) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 55.4 °C / 132 F, compared to the average of 36.7 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 25.2 °C / 77 F, compared to the device average of 30.2 °C / 86 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 22.6 °C / 72.7 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(+) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 28.1 °C / 82.6 F (+5.5 °C / 9.9 F).

Speakers
You shouldn't expect amazing sound from the LG Gram's small speakers. The speakers are neither well-balanced nor are they particularly loud. Highs and lows are noticeably muted.

Battery life - A 80 Wh battery with a runtime of 12 hours
The LG Gram 2-in-1's energy efficiency has a positive effect on battery life. In our standardized Wi-Fi internet surfing test, the Gram's 80 Wh battery lasted 12 hours. Under load, it takes more than two hours before the 2-in-1 starts to seek out a wall socket.

Verdict - A performance plus, but no detail improvements
Apart from the processor, the LG Gram has had no significant changes compared to its predecessor from 2021. This means you could theoretically adopt our last review verdict, almost word for word. With its 16-inch (around 41 cm) display, the 2-in-1 is exceptionally light. Thanks to the new Intel Core i7-1360P, it delivers a balanced performance that can keep pace with many other current laptops. We no longer need to accuse the lightweight device of below-average performance. But, the LG Gram's slender build ought not to be the product's only trump card. The Samsung Galaxy Book3 Pro 360 just about shows that thin, light and stable are not mutually exclusive. Although it is thinner than the LG Gram 2-in-1, it appears to be considerably more robust, despite only coming in at 200 grams heavier.
In the meantime, LG has some strong competition in the super-light laptop arena. This makes the LG Gram 2-in-1 more of a mid-table device than a real game-changer. Nevertheless, the laptop still manages to be reasonably impressive with its display, stamina performance and 360° hinge.
The LG Gram 2-in-1 is primarily enhanced by things which should now be considered standard fare when it comes to 2-in-1 devices and laptops costing considerably more than $1,000. Face recognition, a vivid display, Thunderbolt 4 and good battery life should be the norm. On top of this, LG Gram's machine is one of the few 2-in-1 laptops that comes with a second NVMe slot. Disappointingly, the microSD card reader is so slow it could have been left out altogether. In its place, an additional USB 3.1 port would have been more desirable.
Price and availability
The list price for the LG Gram 2-in-1 sits at around $2,000. As part of Black Friday 2023, LG itself is offering the Gram 2-in-1 for only $1,299.
