Alienware-inspired mini PC review: Alliwava GH9 with Intel Core i9 and Thunderbolt 4 in comparison to Geekom, Minisforum & Co.
Sebastian Bade 👁 (translated by Sebastian Bade) Published 🇩🇪 🇫🇷 ...
Verdict - Alliwava is tripping itself up with the eye-catching housing
The Alliwava GH9 is a mini PC with an Intel Core i9-12900HK, 32 GB RAM, and 1 TB SSD. In everyday use, it impresses with solid processor performance and a wide range of features, including Thunderbolt 4, several USB ports, dual 2.5 Gigabit LAN, and Wi-Fi 6. Weaknesses can be seen in the plastic casing, the less than optimal cooling, the sometimes hard-to-reach connections, and the aging integrated GPU, which is only suitable for basic image output. Graphics-intensive tasks such as gaming or 3D rendering can only be implemented effectively with an external graphics card.
The Alliwava GH9 is struggling in the current market environment, especially as its price-performance ratio is not ideal. Around $540 seems high considering the features on offer, especially as the Bosgame M4 Neo is available with more modern hardware and a more coherent overall package at a similar price.
Pros
Cons
Price and availability
Alliwava is another mini PC manufacturer from the Far East and offers various models with Intel or AMD processors. The GH9 uses an Intel Core i9-12900HK together with 32 GB RAM and a 1 TB SSD. As the Mini-PC is no longer one of the latest models in terms of technology, the question arises whether the Intel Core i9-12900HK has lost its relevance meanwhile or whether the GH9 is still competitive in comparison with current Mini-PCs.
Specifications
Case and features
The housing of the Alliwava GH9 stands out with its unusual design and is therefore very different from many other mini PCs. In practice, however, there is room for criticism. The appearance is appealing but remains a matter of taste, while the choice of materials is less convincing: the case is made entirely of plastic and appears very light overall. The stand is smaller than it appears at first glance, which means that the device is not particularly stable on the table and wobbles slightly. Added to this is the unfavorable positioning of the rear connections, which are difficult to reach. The position of the DisplayPort connection is particularly problematic, as it is almost impossible to release the lock if the connector used has one.
The connectivity of the Alliwava GH9 is more extensive than initially expected. Particularly noteworthy is the Thunderbolt 4 interface, which enables versatile use and even allows the operation of external graphics cards (tested positively with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090) - a clear advantage considering the comparatively weak integrated GPU. The GH9 also offers a solid selection of other interfaces, including several USB ports, two 2.5 Gigabit LAN ports, and Wi-Fi 6 for wireless connectivity.
Support
Alliwava offers a 24-month guarantee on purchase. The manufacturer's website also contains a clearly structured collection of driver packages. However, the download does not lead directly to the file, but to an external cloud provider that requires prior registration. This procedure is not very customer-friendly and causes irritation.
Note:
We had a chat with the manufacturer before publication. They pointed out that all downloads are currently completely free of charge. Alliwava also wants to check alternative cloud storage providers. The manufacturer also plans to address the issue of the poorly positioned DisplayPort connection and make improvements.
Processor
Equipped with the Intel Core i9-12900HK, the Alliwava GH9 is based on a former high-end CPU with 14 cores and 20 threads. With a maximum of 60 watts, the manufacturer only gives the processor a small margin for turbo operation, although 45 watts may be applied under continuous load. In comparison, the competitors are often better, but the gap is only just over 10 percent on average, which is manageable.

System performance
In the system performance benchmarks, the Alliwava GH9 performs well overall but also reveals its limits. It is noticeable that the Minisforum NAB9 with an identical CPU achieves significantly better results. The subjective performance in our everyday testing was good and ran without any significant problems.

Storage devices
Alliwava equips the GH9 with a 1 TB SSD, which offers sufficient capacity for everyday use. However, the installed drive is a no-name model that only works at PCIe 3.0 x4 speed, which is reflected in the measurement results. In the stress test, the mass storage device also showed performance losses and was unable to maintain full speed throughout.

Graphics adapter and gaming performance
The integrated Intel Iris Xe Graphics G7 with 96 execution units is a fairly old iGPU and is essentially only suitable for simpler tasks, like basic image output. The Alliwava GH9 should not be expected to handle more complex 3D tasks. Only with an external graphics card via Thunderbolt 4 is the mini PC capable of handling more computationally intensive tasks such as 3D rendering or games.

Emissions
The casing of the Alliwava GH9 only heats up moderately under load. In contrast, the temperature of the installed Intel Core i9-12900HK is significantly higher, briefly reaching up to 97 C in the stress test and then stabilizing at around 95 C. The average power consumption of the CPU is around 44 watts, whereby the PL2 value of 60 watts is briefly reached at the beginning. At just over 46 dB(A), the mini PC is clearly audible under full load.
In terms of energy efficiency, the GH9 is only competitive to a limited extent. Many comparable devices perform better, especially when idling. Under load, however, the test device benefits from the conservatively selected power limit, which keeps the overall energy consumption within reasonable limits.

Notebookcheck Rating
The Alliwava GH9 delivers a usable everyday performance and scores particularly well with its selection of connections. Weaknesses can be seen in the case material, cooling, and integrated GPU. The performance can be significantly expanded with an external graphics card, which makes the mini PC flexible to use.

This is how Notebookcheck is testing
Every year, Notebookcheck independently reviews hundreds of laptops and smartphones using standardized procedures to ensure that all results are comparable. We have continuously developed our test methods for around 20 years and set industry standards in the process. In our test labs, high-quality measuring equipment is utilized by experienced technicians and editors. These tests involve a multi-stage validation process. Our complex rating system is based on hundreds of well-founded measurements and benchmarks, which maintains objectivity. Further information on our test methods can be found here.
