Minisforum Venus Series NAB9 review: The mini PC with an Intel Core i9-12900HK, 32 GB RAM and active SSD cooling

The Venus Series NAB9 is the latest powerful mini PC released by the manufacturer Minisforum. It is a small PC based on an Intel Core i9-12900HK which can currently already be found from US$359 (MRSP: US$439). This price is just for the barebone model, however, which isn't fitted with RAM or an SSD. The top-of-the-range configuration of the Venus Series NAB9, which is the one we are testing, costs US$509 (MRSP: US$629). It is fitted with 32 GB RAM and a 1-TB SSD. Alternatively, Minisforum offers weaker models on the same base which are equipped with an Intel Core i7-12650H (NAB6) or an Intel Core i7-12700H (NAB7). The prices for each aren't that different from one another.

Case
Visually, the Minisforum Venus Series NAB9 doesn't look any different from the NAB6 or the NPB5: The case is the same which, of course, comes with the same advantages and disadvantages. One positive is how stably it is built—this is thanks to its case being made from metal. The lid and bottom part are made from plastic, resulting in a slightly cheaper feel than the metal surfaces. When it comes to its build quality, we have nothing negative to say.
Thanks to its compact size, the Minisforum Venus Series NAB9 shouldn't take up too much space on your desk. It has a footprint of only 12.7 cm x 12.7 cm. Still, our test sample isn't the most compact within the comparison field. Both models from Geekom (XT12 Pro, A7) are even more compact. The Minisforum Venus Series NAB9 can also be attached to the back of a monitor using the supplied VESA mount. The device itself weighs just 615 grams and its power supply only adds another 277 grams to your scales.
Connectivity
Minisforum has equipped the Venus Series NAB9 with a variety of external ports which are spread out between the front and back of the device. In total, the mini PC features seven USB ports, three of which are Type-C. Unfortunately, they aren't USB4 ports. Even so, they can be used as display outputs and together with its HDMI ports, the PC can power up to four displays at the same time. Its maximum supported resolution is 4K@60Hz.
Communication
Minisforum has installed a WLAN module from Mediatek into the NAB9. We have come across this model quite a few times, although its performance within this device came considerably below the module's average. Compared to its competitors, the Minisforum Venus Series NAB9 has to admit defeat. Even so, its bandwidth is good enough for everyday office work. We used the Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000 as a test router. Alternatively, the Minisforum Venus Series NAB9 offers two RJ45 connections, both of which enable transfer rates of up to 2.5 GBit/s.
Accessories
Maintenance
It is super easy to perform maintenance on the Minisforum Venus Series NPB9. Its case lid can be removed without needing any tools and beneath it lie all the important components such as SSD, RAM and the WLAN module. As Minisforum also offers the NAB9 as a barebone version, you can install components very easily. The CPU fan, which is located on the bottom of the device, is a little trickier to get to. In order to do so, you'll have to remove the bottom plate. The manufacturer advises against removing the CPU cooler as it uses liquid metal.
Performance - Intel Alder Lake-H with 14 cores and 20 threads
The Minisforum Venus Series NAB9's Intel Core i9-12900HK is a very powerful SoC. The processor masters everyday tasks with no problems.
Testing conditions
We carried out all performance tests using the energy profile maximum performance. The SoC's performance was not changed within the BIOS and instead has been left in the PC's delivered state according to the manufacturer's settings.
Processor
The Minisforum Venus Series NAB9 is fitted with the Intel Core i9-12900HK. The SoC belongs to the Alder Lake series and is the top model of the 12th generation of mobile processors. The SoC celebrated its debut back in 2022, meaning the installed model is no longer totally up-to-date. Even so, the performance comparison showed a very good result, as the Intel Core i9-12900HK was able to keep up with the newer processors despite its age. We documented excellent single-core performance and its multi-core performance was consistently high, too. In total, users have 14 cores with 20 threads at their disposal. Minisforum gives the Intel Core i9-12900HK a power consumption of up to 64 watts. This is slightly less than what Intel states as the maximum. Under continuous load, however, its energy requirement only drops slightly to 45 watts.

The Minisforum Venus Series NAB9 during the Cinebench R15 Multi Loop
System performance
The PC's total system performance benefits from the great CPU performance, resulting in the Minisforum Venus Series NPB9 again scoring well. During the RAM tests, however, our test sample lagged slightly behind. The reason for this is the standard which has been used, as the top three places are occupied by mini PCs equipped with DDR5 RAM. Subjectively, the Minisforum Venus Series NPB9 works very quickly and without any noticeable latencies.

DPC latencies
We didn't document any increased latencies when simply surfing the web. We only noted these when playing the 4K test video. However, there were no dropped frames and overall, the Minisforum Venus Series NAB9 had no problems playing high-resolution videos. Because of this, we believe it is suitable for use as a streaming client.

Storage devices
The Minisforum Venus Series NAB9 houses a 1-TB SSD from Kingston. The SSD in our test system enables fast working speeds and this was confirmed in its benchmark results. Its read and write rates were flawless and even under permanent load, they remained stable. Minisforum has installed a relatively large cooling unit onto the SSD itself which features an active cooler. Two SSDs can be installed into the PC in total. Aside from the NVMe SSD in our test sample, there is space for another 2.5-inch storage device beneath the case lid. However, it can only have a maximum build height of seven millimeters.

Graphics card
The Intel Iris Xe Graphics G7 takes care of 3D calculations as well as image output on the Minisforum Venus Series NAB9. Although this is one of the fastest iGPUs in the series, Intel has to admit clear defeat to the newer iGPUs from AMD. Intel only revised the architecture of its iGPUs based on Meteor Lake. You can look at the Acemagic F2A's results as an example. Nevertheless, AMD still delivers a little more 3D performance with its Radeon 780M.

Gaming performance
Many games overwhelm the iGPU and it can only deliver playable frame rates at low resolutions with few details. In direct comparison to the competition, our test sample fell behind the Geekom A7 and the Acemagic F2A. Unfortunately, there isn't a way to use the device with an external graphics card in order to improve its 3D performance. Alternatively, you can take a closer look at the Minisforum Venus Series NPB5.

Temperature
The Minisforum Venus Series NAB9's case only heats up slightly when idling. Under load, its metal surfaces heat up quite a bit more. The fan outlets are located on the right and on the back of the PC.
The processor itself only reached 78 °C during the stress test—this is an impressive result. At 71 °C, the computer's average temperature is a lot lower and was reached at a continuous load of 45 watts. With this in mind, the manufacturer could have chosen a slightly more conservative fan curve to reduce noise emissions a little. However, Minisforum could also have given the Intel Core i9-12900HK a higher power limit, as the cooling unit is certainly powerful.
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 40 °C / 104 F, compared to the average of 35.7 °C / 96 F, ranging from 21.6 to 69.5 °C for the class Mini PC.
(-) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 46.7 °C / 116 F, compared to the average of 36.1 °C / 97 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 27 °C / 81 F, compared to the device average of 32.3 °C / 90 F.
Power consumption
In terms of efficiency, the Minisforum Venus Series NAB9 can no longer keep up with its competitors. Its power consumption is a lot higher under load, but it is still within an acceptable range. Three-digit values were only reached briefly, whereby its average power consumption balanced out at around 83 watts. The 120-watt power supply supplies enough energy at all times and it even has enough reserves for a second storage device.

Verdict - A powerful mini PC at a fair price
The Minisforum Venus Series NAB9 offers impressive performance. Its Intel Core i9-12900HK can still compete with more modern SoCs when it comes to CPU performance alone. In terms of 3D performance, the now outdated iGPU is clearly inferior to the newer models from Intel and AMD. However, the Minisforum Venus Series NAB9 can't win any efficiency awards, as its power consumption values revealed. Price-wise, the mini PC currently won't cost you an arm and a leg at US$509, although the Geekom A7 or the Acemagic F2A are significantly more expensive. Both competitors offer slightly more performance, even if the Acemagic F2A doesn't necessarily feature the best connectivity options. The NAB9's port selection is good if you purely go by numbers. On the other hand, it unfortunately doesn't have any USB-4 ports which could give the device a much better range of possible uses.
The Minisforum Venus Series NAB9 is an attractive work device with fantastic performance. However, the Minisforum Venus Series NAB9 can currently only set itself apart from the wide mass of mini PCs due to its price.
Visually, you'll have to come to terms with the mini PC being silver, but this isn't a bad thing. All of its surfaces are aligned evenly and we noted no build flaws whatsoever. Unfortunately, Minisforum has decided against using a case made entirely from aluminum, which would've elevated its haptics even more. This would surely result in the current price no longer being maintained and this is exactly what makes the device a very interesting choice at the moment.
Prices and availability
You can purchase the Minisforum Venus Series NAB9 from Amazon for US$503.99. This is the model with an Intel Core i9-12900HK and 32 GB RAM. You can also order the mini PC directly from Minisforum. Prices start from US$359.
