Verdict - Solid mini PC for office and multimedia use
Like other models in the GMKtec series, the NucBox M3 Ultra scores with a strong price-performance ratio. With the Intel Core i7-12700H, it offers solid computing power that significantly outperforms many entry-level CPUs. This makes the mini PC ideal as a compact all-rounder, office system, or HTPC, which is also underpinned by low DPC latencies. Despite the comparatively low price for the barebone version, the build quality is impressive with a high-quality mix of aluminum and plastic.
However, the system shows slight weaknesses when it comes to cooling: the mini PC becomes audible under load, and the fan control still seems immature. A more finely tuned fan curve would be desirable. A dedicated GPU is missing, but the integrated Intel Iris Xe Graphics offers sufficient performance for multimedia, streaming, and occasional casual gaming. Meanwhile, the connectivity only offers the simple standard without USB4 or OCuLink. Opponents like the Minisforum UM890 Pro or the Geekom A8 have an advantage here.
Pros
Cons
Price and availability
The GMKtec NucBox M3 Ultra combines high computing power with an ultra-compact form factor. Inside is an Intel Core i7-12700H, a native 14-core processor with a boost clock of up to 4.7 GHz, supported by the integrated Intel Iris Xe Graphics. Despite its small size, the mini PC offers space for up to 64 GB DDR4 RAM and up to 8 TB SSD storage. We are testing the model with 32 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD, which is currently available from around $429.
Specifications
Case & Connectivity
The GMKtec NucBox M3 Ultra comes in a compact mini PC case that is visually and functionally based on the design of GMKtec devices. Despite the low purchase price, the manufacturer has opted for a combination of metal and plastic. The connections are standard, which should be sufficient for most users. The NucBox M3 Ultra does not offer more modern interfaces such as USB4 or OCuLink.

Maintenance
To open the GMKtec NucBox M3 Ultra, first remove the bottom of the housing. Inside, some components can be replaced or upgraded if necessary.
Sustainability
GMKtec does not provide any specific information on possible sustainability aspects in the manufacturing process. The packaging consists mainly of cardboard and is only supplemented by a few foam elements to protect the Mini PC.
Performance
Test conditions
The test runs were carried out in the delivery state with a TDP of 35 watts. A performance mode (45 watts) and a silent mode (28 watts) are also available in the BIOS.
Processor
The Intel Core i7-12700H delivers solid performance with its 14 cores (6P + 8E). In terms of power consumption, the SoC only works with 35 watts, which is the minimum guaranteed performance according to Intel's specifications. This means that the processor cannot keep up with its competitors in multi-threaded tasks.

Storage Devices
A 1 TB SSD from TWSC is installed in the GMKtec NucBox M3 Ultra. The mass storage device uses the PCIe 3.0 x4 interface and offers solid transfer rates that are perfectly adequate for everyday use. The active cooling unit is not present, which means that performance drops slightly under continuous load. There is also a second M.2-2280 slot for the installation of an additional SSD.

Graphics card and gaming performance
The integrated Intel Iris Xe graphics unit of the GMKtec NucBox M3 Ultra offers a solid basis for everyday tasks such as office work, media playback, or simple photo and video editing. However, current graphics benchmarks show that the iGPU cannot compete in terms of performance with newer integrated solutions, such as those found in models with modern AMD or Intel processors of the latest generation. The performance is only partially sufficient for demanding games or graphics-intensive applications. The GMKtec NucBox M3 Ultra does not offer the option of using an external GPU via USB4 or OCuLink.

System Noise
The GMKtec NucBox M3 Ultra Mini-PC relies on a compact cooling system with an active fan. However, the Mini-PC never works silently, even if only a very low noise level can be heard when idling. Under load, however, the fan turns up audibly and reaches a maximum sound pressure level of 45.6 dB(A). The fan control is still somewhat immature - additional setting options, ideally via software, would be desirable.

Temperature
Under load, the casing of the GMKtec NucBox M3 Ultra heats up noticeably and reaches a peak value of almost 50 C on the underside. In the stress test, the Intel Core i7-12700H initially rises to around 76 C and then stabilizes at around 74 C. The power consumption of the SoC fluctuates slightly between 33 and 37 watts, although an average of 35 watts is reached.
(-) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 45.5 °C / 114 F, compared to the average of 35.8 °C / 96 F, ranging from 21.6 to 69.5 °C for the class Mini PC.
(-) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 49.5 °C / 121 F, compared to the average of 36.5 °C / 98 F
(±) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 37 °C / 99 F, compared to the device average of 32.4 °C / 90 F.
Energy management
In the test, the GMKtec NucBox M3 Ultra with the Intel Core i7-12700H is not as energy-efficient as the comparison devices with more modern SoCs. Due to the conservative TDP, our test sample only operates at a maximum of 60.7 watts under full load. This means that the 100-watt power supply is sufficiently specified and offers enough reserves, for example, for performance mode.
