Geekom A8 review: Premium 0.5-liter mini-PC with AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS, 32 GB DDR5 RAM and 2 TB SSD

Mini-PCs are becoming increasingly powerful and are in no way inferior to conventional desktop PCs when it comes to everyday performance. The compact PCs also score highly in terms of efficiency, driving the use of mini-PCs. The Geekom A8 is based on the Geekom A7 and impresses visually with its elegant design. The top configuration of this extremely high-quality and powerful mini-PC is based on an AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS with 32 GB DDR5 RAM and a 2 TB SSD. If the Geekom A8 is on your wish list, you currently have to put around 950 euros on the table. The base configuration is slightly cheaper at 799 euros. However, the performance should hardly differ from the top model in practice, as the AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS is identical and also has eight cores and 16 threads.
The Geekom A8 will have to compete with Geekom A7. Nevertheless, we take a look at the performance in comparison to the other Mini-PC manufacturers, who also have very powerful devices in their portfolio. We have compiled an overview of the comparison devices in the following table.

Case - Sturdy 0.5l aluminum housing
The Geekom A8 uses the same housing as the Geekom A7 which has a very high-quality look and feel. The housing, made entirely of aluminum, offers enormous stability and the elegant design has a modern look. With a volume of around 0.5l, the Geekom A8 and Geekom A7 are among the most compact devices, and combine this with enormous computing power. In comparison, the Geekom A8 takes up less space on the desk, and at just over 400 grams, the mini-PC is also very light.
Features - Many connections including USB4
Although the Geekom A8 is extremely compact, the manufacturer has provided the mini-PC with a wide range of connection options. Four USB Type-A ports are sufficient, and in terms of numbers, Geekom is in line with the masses here. The most modern interface of the Geekom A8 is the USB4, which can expand the application possibilities enormously. In the test, we take a look at the performance in conjunction with external graphics cards. Screens can be connected directly via HDMI, although the two USB-C ports can also be used for image output as an alternative. In total, four screens can be operated simultaneously. Another positive feature is the fast SD card reader, which is located on the left-hand side.

Communication
A MediaTek Wi-Fi 6E MT7922 WLAN module is installed in the Geekom A8. The performance in our measurements is good and more than suitable for everyday use. In comparison with the competition, our test sample only comes out on top in places. The wireless module can handle the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz frequency ranges. The Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000 router was used for the performance tests. An RJ45 socket is also installed in the Geekom A8 and can be used as an alternative network connection. Transfer rates of up to 2.5 GBit/s are possible here.
Accessories
Maintenance
Geekom always sells the A8 pre-configured, which means that you don't necessarily have to disassemble the device. Nevertheless, the RAM and SSD can be removed and replaced if necessary. To take the device apart, you first need to remove the glued-on rubber feet on the underside. Underneath are the four retaining screws to remove the base plate. You should be careful here, as the WLAN antenna cable does not have much room to maneuver and can be damaged. There is another metal plate under the base plate, which also needs to be removed if you want to access the SSD or RAM. The WLAN module can also be replaced and is not permanently installed. The CPU fan is located on the other side of the board and cannot be reached without completely dismantling it. With a little dexterity, the entire unit (board with cooling unit) can be removed from the housing.
Performance - AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS with 8 cores and 16 threads
The AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS ensures an excellent working speed in the Geekom A8. Technically, the SoC is based on the Zen4 architecture and combines eight cores with 16 threads. If you want to buy a cheaper configuration, Geekom A8 can be equipped with the AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS that features slightly lower clock rates.
Test conditions
We carried out all performance tests with the Balanced
power plan. The performance of the SoC and the RAM allocation (512 MB) were not changed in the BIOS and were left as delivered in accordance with the manufacturer's settings. The BIOS itself does not offer the option of making any changes here anyway.
Processor
Our test sample is equipped with the AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS. This belongs to the Hawk Point series and is still based on the Zen4 architecture. There are few changes compared to the 7000 series, which means that the Geekom A8 is not particularly different from the Geekom A7 in terms of performance. The duel with the recently introduced Minisforum AtomMan X7 Ti only won in places but you won't notice a noticeable difference in practice.

Cinebench R15 Multi loop
The Cinebench R15 endurance loop serves as our first endurance test to see how well the cooling system copes with the powerful AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS. At the beginning, we see a fairly stable performance of the processor, which decreases slightly in the second half. Up to 65 watts are available to the SoC in the short term, although just under 50 watts are reached under longer load. The temperature limit of the processor in the Geekom A8 is defined as 90 °C. In the performance comparison, this is enough for our mini-PC to secure third place. Only the Minisforum AtomMan X7 Ti and the Acemagic F2A deliver better performance in this test.
System performance
The system performance of the Geekom A8 is outstanding. However, this also applies to the other test devices that have already completed our test course. There will hardly be a noticeable difference in everyday use. However, the differences are measurable, even if they only vary by a few percentage points in the top ranks. The Geekom A7 can be easily outperformed in all tests.

DPC latencies
The Geekom A8 fails in terms of latency, and even surfing with the Edge browser results in increased values. The latencies increase further shortly after starting playback of the 4K test video. However, the Geekom A8 does not have any problems when playing high-resolution videos. The utilization of the iGPU is conspicuously high at 60 percent. The iGPU of the Geekom A7 was only utilized to 30 percent in the same test.

Mass storage
The Geekom A8 features the same model that we already tested in the Geekom A7. The Acer model delivers solid performance. The Acer N5000 is not one of the fastest SSDs, however the mass storage device masters everyday use with flying colors. There are no thermal problems, which is excellent considering the compact design. With 2 TB, the manufacturer has also installed a model with plenty of storage space. This is a good thing, as an additional data carrier cannot be installed in the device.

Graphics card
The AMD Radeon 780M can be found in several competitors. As the iGPU of the AMD Ryzen, 9 8945HS, the modern graphics unit is also used in the Geekom A8. Only 512 MB of RAM is reserved for the iGPU in the delivery state. This is not much but can be adjusted in the UEFI. With the same configuration, the Geekom A7 delivers equivalent performance compared to the newer A8. In the performance comparison, we can also see that AMD's Radeon 780M can keep up with an Intel Arc 8.

Gaming performance
The AMD Radeon 780M is only an iGPU, but it has a good 3D performance that makes it possible to play a few games. Some limitations in terms of detail level must be accepted in order to achieve adequate frame rates. The gaming performance depends very much on the game in question and cannot be quantified across the board.
For a detailed overview of the iGPU's performance compared to other graphics cards, please refer to our GPU game list.

Geekom A8 with two eGPUs in the performance test
The Geekom A8 offers a USB4 port, which allows us to test the mini-PC in conjunction with our external graphics cards. We tested the device in combination with the GPD G1 as well as the Razer Core X and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti. Both graphics solutions deliver noticeably more performance than the iGPU of the Geekom A8. In comparison with other devices, the increase in performance is at a similar level. There is a small difference with the GPD G1, which can deliver around ten percent more performance in combination with the OCuLink interface. The Minisforum AtomMan X7 Ti is equipped with such an interface and serves as a reference model in the comparison overview.

Emissions
Noise emissions
The Geekom A8 is an extremely compact mini-PC, which means that only a very small cooling unit can be accommodated in the device. Without load, the device operates almost silently and is barely audible. However, this changes under load. With that said, we don't see a big difference between average and maximum load, which means that the Geekom A8 is quickly audible even under low load. At its peak, we measured a sound pressure level of just over 49 dB(A). Only the Acemagic F2A achieved similarly high values in our test, while the Geekom A7 is significantly quieter under load.

Temperature
The aluminum casing of the Geekom A8 heats up noticeably when idling. However, this is not a problem, even though the temperature only rises minimally under load. The surface temperatures even drop sometimes, which indicates that the fan hardly works at idle and therefore more heat builds up in the device itself.
The AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS heats up to 85.5 °C during stress testing. This is not a critical value, especially as it only occurs for a short time. Over a longer period, the CPU temperature stabilizes at just under 77 °C. At 35 watts, the SoC operates according to the manufacturer's specifications.
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 41.9 °C / 107 F, compared to the average of 35.8 °C / 96 F, ranging from 21.6 to 69.5 °C for the class Mini PC.
(+) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 39.9 °C / 104 F, compared to the average of 36.1 °C / 97 F
(-) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 38.6 °C / 101 F, compared to the device average of 32.3 °C / 90 F.
Power consumption
The energy requirement and the resulting efficiency a strengths of the Geekom A8. We have already seen this trend in the Geekom A7. Both models are very close to each other here. Especially in idle mode, Geekom can boast low power consumption. Under average load, we documented 71 watts for our test device. The Geekom A8 only reaches the peak value of 93.2 watts for a short time. The power is provided by a small 120-watt power supply unit.

Cons
Verdict - Lots of power in a tiny 0.5l case
The Geekom A8 is an extremely compact PC - with a volume of just 0.5 liters, the Geekom A8 performs remarkably well. The AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS can consistently demonstrate a high working speed. With 32 GB DDR5 RAM and a 2 TB SDD, you are well equipped for the time being. However, due to the compact design, the SoC can only be operated with minimal power consumption. Nevertheless, the Geekom masters everyday tasks without any problems. In a direct comparison with the Geekom A7, the A8 falls short.
The Geekom A8 is based on the same design as the Geekom A7. The excellently crafted housing is not only visually high-quality but also has a convincing feel. If anything, the disassembly process is worthy of criticism. However, due to the fact that Geekom always sells the A8 pre-configured, this can be overlooked. As an alternative to the Ryzen 9 model, the Geekom A8 can also be ordered with the Ryzen 7 8845HS (799 euros). This saves you some money, although the performance should not be noticeably worse. However, you will have to make a choice when it comes to the SSD configuration, as Geekom only offers the Ryzen 7 model with a 1 TB SSD.
The Geekom A8 is a stylish mini-PC with excellent performance. Together with the excellent workmanship and the high-quality choice of materials, the Geekom A8 is a premium-class mini-PC.
There is nothing to complain about when it comes to the selection of external interfaces. The small computing powerhouse offers a wide range of connection options and, with USB4, a top modern interface that can expand the range of applications. If the performance of the fast iGPU aka AMD Radeon 780M is not enough, the Geekom A8 can be transformed into a powerful gaming PC with an external graphics card.
In terms of design, the Geekom A8 and Geekom A7 are among the most beautiful mini-PCs we have tested to date. However, the compact design also causes some problems and limitations. For example, the external connections, are very close together at the rear. The noise level under load is another point of criticism. We would have liked to see a slightly better-tuned cooling unit from the manufacturer.
Price and availability
The Geekom A8 currently costs 949 euros ($1,030) in the version we reviewed. Customers can order the mini-PC directly from the manufacturer (5% off Code: NOTEA8). Otherwise, the Geekom A8 can also be ordered via Amazon (5% off Code: NOTEBCA8).
