Geekom AS 6 review: The ultimate mini PC for pros and gamers with a Ryzen 9 6900HX and a Radeon 680M

In terms of mini PCs, Geekom seem to be releasing their models in one fell swoop, as just after our review of the Geekom AS 5, it is already time to take a look at the Taiwanese manufacturer's AS 6 model. It features a newer SoC and better connectivity options. Our test device has an AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX with 32 GB DDR5 RAM and a 1-TB SSD. You can preorder this whole package for only $749, whereas its MRSP is a respectable $1,009. Their cooperation with Asus remains for this model, as the Geekom AS 6 and the Asus ExpertCenter PN53 are built the exact same. Even so, the Asus model is considerably more expensive. For the mini PC with only 16 GB RAM and a 512 GB SSD, they already charge around $1,000. If you are looking to save even more money, you can take a look at the Geekom AS 6 with an AMD Ryzen 7 6800H. This model features the same RAM and SSD as our test sample, except it only costs $689. There are currently no further configurations available, which also includes there not being any barebone model.
The Intel NUC 13 Pro can be viewed as the Geekom PC's main competitor. We have already tested this device, which features an Intel Core i7-1360P, but there are many other equally powerful competitors out there, which we have summarized in the following table.

Case
Visually, the Geekom AS 6 looks the exact same as the Geekom AS 5. Its cooperation with Asus is also no secret, as can be seen in the device's build. It is also identical to the Asus ExpertCenter PN53. Its footprint of 13 x 12 centimetres is quite small. Even so, there are some smaller devices on the market, too. The Geekom AS 6 weighs in at 753 grams, meaning it is only minimally heavier than the AS 5. We didn't notice any issues in its build quality. On the other hand, the materials used aren't exactly of the highest quality, as the entire case is just made of a basic plastic material. Although, the inside is strengthened by metal, which does make the case a lot more stable. We didn't notice any flaws or issues on our test device.
The Geekom AS 6 can be attached to a monitor via the supplied VESA mount - this is quite common with mini PCs.
Connectivity
Due to its previously mentioned similarities to the Geekom AS 5, the Geekom AS 6 also features similar connectivity options. This includes seven USB ports, meaning the newer model remains to be excellently kitted out. It also has two HMDI ports and a DisplayPort connection, which, in combination with its backward USB-C port, means you can connect four displays simultaneously. Its USB-C port on the front is the most useful. It offers USB 4 speeds and supports Thunderbolt, meaning the Geekom AS 6's uses can be greatly expanded with the help of the right external devices.
Communication
Geekom have installed the same Wi-Fi 6E AX211 module into the AS 6 as could already be seen in the AS 5. Its transfer rates are almost identical. Although, its 6-GHz frequency rates are slightly better than its competitors. The Geekom AS 6 struggled a little more with 5-GHz frequency and had to admit defeat to the Minisforum Neptune Series NAD9 in our test. Compared to the Intel NUC 13 Pro, our test sample did really well. For this test, we used an Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000 as our test router. You can alternatively connect to the internet via the Ethernet port, which can achieve up to 2.5 Gbit/s transfer rates.
Accessories
The mini PC comes with a 150-watt power supply as well as a mounting plate to connect the device to a monitor (VESA mount). An HDMI cable, a short instruction manual and a few screws are also included.
Maintenance
The Geekom AS 6 can be opened up from the bottom. The case is held together by a multitude of small screws situated within the device's rubber feet. The SSD's heat conducting pad leads to a little bit of resistance when opening the PC up. The installed components can be easily accessed and swapped out or upgraded if needed. The Geekom AS 6 can accommodate up to three SSDs.
Performance - an AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX with a Radeon 680M as an iGPU
The Geekom AS 6 has been equipped with an AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX - a modern SoC with a fast iGPU. Its performance increase thanks to its AMD Radeon 680M leads to it performing better than the Geekom AS 5, which had to make do with an AMD Radeon RX Vega 8. You are well-equipped with 32 GB RAM, and its 1 TB SSD should be more than enough for the majority of users.
Testing conditions
We ran all of our performance tests using the profile "Highest Performance". The SoC's performance was not changed in the BIOS and left in its delivered state according to the manufacturer's settings.
Processor
The AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX is the powerhouse of the Geekom AS 6 and it delivers good multi-core performance thanks to its 8 cores and 16 threads. Directly compared to the Geekom AS 5, which is fitted with an AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX, the newer model can't squeeze much more performance out of the SoC. Both devices are almost equally fast. The same can be said comparing it to the Morfine M600, which is also fitted with the AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX.
When it comes to pure CPU performance, its Intel rival simply couldn't keep up. However, there were only 5 percentage points between the Intel NUC 13 Pro and the Geekom AS 6's performance ratings, which reflects the average of all CPU benchmarks. Intel, with its Core i7-1360P, achieved the better total result thanks to its better single-core performance. Although, you will likely not be able to notice these small differences in everyday use.
In the AIDA64 benchmarks, the Geekom AS 6 very clearly showed that it has a strong SoC installed. On the other hand, we noted that almost all AMD based systems did much better than their competition. At this point, the Geekom AS 6 was able to secure itself the first place.
You can find further processor benchmarks here.

Geekom AS 6 vs. Cinebench R15 Multi Loop
During the Cinebench R15 Multi Loop, we measured how the SoC behaved under longer periods of load. The AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX first ran at its maximum TDP of 65 watts - due to its temperatures, it slowed down a little after the 13th run. During the further course, we noted a TDP of 40 watts, which was able to be maintained securely thanks to its cooling system. In comparison, the Geekom AS 6 did a little better than the Intel NUC 13 Pro, as it was able to get better continuous performance levels from its SoC.
System performance
Our Geekom AS 6 did really well in the synthetic benchmarks with regards to its system performance. During PCMark 10, our Geekom AS 6 and the Morefine M600 landed in first place. After a slight gap, the Intel-powered NUC 13 Pro followed, although these results looked entirely different during Crossmark. Here, all AMD powered systems struggled more to put any pressure on the Intel-SoC-powered mini PCs. During our RAM tests using AIDA64, the Geekom AS 6 was able to show its strengths thanks to its DDR5. In comparison, this was enough for the AS 6 to place itself ahead of the Morefine M600, which features a similar setup. The Intel NUC 13 Pro Kit, on the other hand, is fitted with a slightly slower DDR4 RAM.

Geekom have given the AS 6 an identically-built 1,024 GB NVMe SSD from Kingston - the same as we saw in the Geekom AS 5. This model also uses an NV2 SSD from Kingston. Both models - this SSD as well as the one in the Geekom AS 5 - performed identically. Although the installed model uses the NVMe port, it delivered mediocre performance when it came to sequential writing. In terms of read writes, both models performed similarly. After consulting the manufacturer, we are currently considering installing another model that can delivers better performance in terms of its consistency. However, we currently only have the possibility to evaluate its actual state, and this made it clear that the Geekom AS 6 unfortunately achieved nothing more than last place in this comparison.
Generally, the SSD choice with regards to NVMe support and storage capacity was a job well done for Geekom. Although, we were able to rule out an issue with the device itself when it comes to its shown performance, as we achieved much better results using our Kingston KC3000 in the same system. We have attached a screenshot of the AS SSD benchmarks.
The Geekom AS 6 has space for up to three storage devices in total. Two use the M.2 slot and a third has to be a 2.5-inch storage device.
Further comparisons and benchmarks can be seen in our comparison table.
Please note:
Our colleagues in the US have tested the Geekom AS 6 based on an AMD Ryzen 7 6800H. Thus, we have also taken a quick look at its SSD performance with this sample, to see if it showed any similar problems. According to the benchmarks, this Kingston model installed in this version did considerably better.
