Verdict - Strong price-performance ratio with a wide range of connections
Like other models from the GMKtec portfolio, the NucBox M7 Ultra is positioned with an attractive price-performance ratio. The built-in AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 6850U offers convincing all-round performance in this price range and is therefore well suited as a compact desktop PC, multimedia system, or HTPC. Despite the comparatively low price, the build quality gives no cause for criticism, but does not quite reach the high-quality level of more expensive mini PCs with all-aluminum housings.
The extensive connectivity, which opens up additional application options with USB4 and OCuLink and sets new standards in this price range, is a positive highlight. However, compromises must be made in terms of cooling: The mini PC becomes audible under load, and the fan control does not appear to be optimally tuned. Although it lacks a dedicated graphics unit for demanding gaming, the integrated AMD Radeon 680M offers sufficient performance for multimedia applications, streaming and occasional gaming. Overall, the GMKtec NucBox M7 Ultra presents itself as a well-balanced, compact all-rounder with good features and a coherent overall package.
Pros
Cons
Price and availability
Depending on the equipment, the GMKtec NucBox M7 Ultra is available at attractive entry-level prices and can be ordered directly from the manufacturer begining at $309. The configuration we tested is priced above the Barebone version and is correspondingly higher. The NucBox M7 Ultra with 16 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD can be ordered from Amazon for $559.
The GMKtec NucBox M7 Ultra combines solid computing power with a compact housing. However, the manufacturer relies on a slightly older AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 6850U which nevertheless promises adequate performance in everyday use with its 8 cores. The NucBox M7 Ultra is particularly interesting in terms of price. The Barebone version starts at just $309, although our test device also doesn't tear a big hole in the household budget at $529 if the device is ordered directly from the manufacturer. It is ordered directly from the manufacturer.
Specifications
Housing & equipment
The GMKtec NucBox M7 Ultra fits in visually with the manufacturer's model range. Apart from the eye-catching power button on the front, there are no other visual highlights, making the device appear quite simple. The combination of a metal housing for the body and plastic elements on the top and bottom proves to be a success and gives the mini PC a high level of stability and low weight at the same time. The variety of connections is also impressive: in addition to two fast LAN ports, two USB4 interfaces and OCuLink are available - a clear added value in this price range.

Maintenance
Maintenance work is always planned and is mainly carried out via the top of the appliance. After loosening the cover by turning it, the top of the housing, which is secured with four screws, can be removed. The underside can also be removed, but the glued-on rubber feet must be removed for this.
Sustainability
The manufacturer does not provide any precise information on sustainability aspects in the production process of the GMKtec NucBox M7 Ultra. The packaging consists mainly of cardboard and is only supplemented by a few foam inserts to protect the device.
Test conditions
The benchmarks were carried out with factory default settings. The SoC operates with 45 watts, although the iGPU is assigned 3 GB as VRAM. The BIOS offers several options for adjusting the performance and fan control.
Processor
The AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 6850U is no longer one of the latest models. Nevertheless, the SoC in combination with the GMKtec NucBox M7 Ultra shows a quite decent performance, which is also due to the power consumption of 45 watts under load. Even under continuous load, the power consumption does not drop, and the full performance is available. Although there is a measurable performance gap compared to newer CPU architectures, this remains manageable at an average of around 15 percent across all CPU benchmarks.

System performance
The GMKtec NucBox M7 Ultra delivers convincing computing power in everyday use without significant latencies. However, there is no integrated NPU for accelerating AI applications, which should be considered when using special requirements. Thanks to its very low DPC latencies, the mini PC is particularly suitable for use as a streaming client and offers correspondingly high potential here.

Storage devices
In our test configuration, a 1 TB SSD in M.2 format is used in the GMKtec NucBox M7 Ultra. The mass storage device connected via PCIe achieves transfer rates suitable for everyday use and ensures short loading times, but cannot keep up with the faster SSDs of some competitors. The active cooling unit ensures stable performance under continuous load. An additional M.2-2280 slot is also available for retrofitting an additional SSD.

GPU and gaming performance
The GMKtec NucBox M7 Ultra is equipped with the integrated AMD Radeon 680M, which offers solid graphics performance in everyday use. The performance comparison shows an excellent performance yield of the iGPU, which is consistently above average. The same can also be seen in the gaming tests, where the test device ranks in the top third. However, the Radeon 680M falls noticeably behind newer and more powerful iGPUs such as the Radeon 890M or Radeon 8060S.

GMKtec NucBox M7 Ultra performance check with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 via OCuLink
The GMKtec NucBox M7 Ultra supports external graphics cards, which can be connected via USB4 or OCuLink. The latter should be used primarily due to the higher bandwidth to achieve the best possible performance. As our tests with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 show, the 3D performance of the mini PC can be significantly increased.

System noise
The GMKtec NucBox M7 Ultra relies on a compact cooling system to control the temperature of the processor and components. The manufacturer also installs a separate fan for the SSD and RAM. The mini PC is not completely silent during operation. The fan installed in the top ensures a constant noise level of around 32 dB(A) when idle. Under load, the volume increases audibly, but is still within a moderate range overall. The fan tuning could be a little finer - additional setting options, ideally via software, would be a plus here. Alternatively, the only option is to adjust the fan via the BIOS to reduce the fan in the case lid.

Temperature
Under sustained load, the casing of the GMKtec NucBox M7 Ultra heats up significantly, but critical temperature ranges are not reached. In the stress test, the temperature of the APU rises to up to 73 °C, although the temperature stabilizes at 71 °C. The power consumption of the AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 6850U remains constant at 45 watts.
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 43.3 °C / 110 F, compared to the average of 35.8 °C / 96 F, ranging from 20.6 to 69.5 °C for the class Mini PC.
(±) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 44.9 °C / 113 F, compared to the average of 36.3 °C / 97 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 31.4 °C / 89 F, compared to the device average of 32.4 °C / 90 F.
(-) 3: The average temperature for the upper side is 39.3 °C / 103 F, compared to the average of 32.4 °C / 90 F for the class Mini PC.
Energy management
Due to the now older CPU architecture, the energy efficiency of the GMKtec NucBox M7 Ultra is not one of its greatest strengths. Even in idle mode, the power consumption is at a comparatively high level. Under load, however, the power consumption is inconspicuous, with brief peaks of just over 75 watts. The power supply unit can provide a maximum of 120 watts.
