Minisforum AI X1 Pro with Ryzen AI 9 HX 470 review: Mini-PC upgrade for office, gaming & AI with RAM bottleneck?
New SoC equals more power?
Minisforum is updating the AI X1 Pro and is now giving the compact powerhouse the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 470, bringing an even more powerful APU to the fore that promises additional reserves, especially for demanding workloads and AI applications. But can the new processor actually meet the high expectations in practice?Sebastian Bade 👁 (translated by Sebastian Bade) Published 🇩🇪
Verdict: Powerful, but not optimally configured
The Minisforum AI X1 Pro version with AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 470 presents itself as a powerful mini PC in a compact format. In combination with 32 GB RAM, a fast SSD and an extensive range of interfaces, the system can handle even very demanding workloads with ease. The high-quality workmanship and solid choice of materials underline the premium claim of the device. However, the biggest point of criticism concerns the RAM: although 32 GB seems generous on paper, the memory bandwidth is significantly limited due to the use of only one SO-DIMM module. This single-channel configuration noticeably slows down numerous applications, as our tests show. Minisforum is cutting corners in the wrong place here - even if a later upgrade is possible in principle.
A particularly positive feature is the excellently coordinated cooling: both the housing and the SoC remain at uncritical temperature values even under prolonged and high loads. At the same time, the cooling system works efficiently and remains pleasantly quiet so that the Mini-PC is not noticeable even under load.
With an optimized RAM configuration, the Minisforum AI X1 Pro with Ryzen AI 9 HX 470 unleashes its full potential and impresses as a powerful, compact mini PC. The combination of high CPU and iGPU performance, modern AI acceleration, and extensive connectivity makes it equally attractive for productive workloads and gaming - even with additional power reserve via an eGPU if required.
Pros
Cons
Price and availability
With the new SoC, Minisforum wants to build on the good results with the AI X1 Pro. The AMD Ryzen AI 9 470 HX provides a good basis for this, but as our test shows, a new SoC alone is not enough to deliver more performance. Together with 32 GB RAM and a 1 TB SSD, we took a closer look at the performance of the new business all-rounder for €1,399.
Specifications
Case & Connectivity
The case and features of the Minisforum AI X1 Pro with AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 470 are completely identical to the Minisforum AI X1 Pro with AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370. The only differences are the processor and RAM configuration of our test device. For more details, please refer to the test of the Minisforum AI X1 Pro-HX 370.

Maintenance
Maintenance of the Minisforum AI X1 Pro-HX470 is comparatively simple: after loosening a few screws, the underside can be removed. To access the RAM and SSD, however, the combined power supply and speaker unit must be removed - care must be taken here due to the short cables. RAM, WLAN module and SSD can be replaced or expanded.
Sustainability
Minisforum has not completely ignored the issue of sustainability: compared to the AI X1 Pro-HX370, the HX470 model is delivered in simpler, more environmentally friendly cardboard packaging. However, the manufacturer does not provide any further details on production or certifications.
Test conditions
All benchmarks were carried out in the factory settings. Minisforum allows the performance profile of the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 470 to be adjusted in the BIOS, but testing was carried out in the factory settings with the "Auto" setting.
Processor
The AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 470 delivers a very high overall performance, but in our test it cannot compete with the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 which is used in the older, identical Minisforum AI X1 Pro. The reasons for this may lie in the usual performance variance of the processors, but the RAM configuration also plays a decisive role - as will be shown in the following test sections. However, with only one installed memory module, Minisforum is saving at the wrong end, which is already easily recognizable in the pure CPU benchmarks. With a short-term power limit of up to 65 watts and a continuous power consumption of up to 54 watts, the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 470 operates at the same performance level as the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 in Minisforum's predecessor model.

System performance
The Minisforum AI X1 Pro is basically equipped with a powerful APU, which, however, can only exploit its full potential to a limited extent due to the RAM configuration. This is primarily evident in the RAM benchmarks, in which our test sample is clearly lagging. The slightly lower performance yield is evident in all benchmarks, as can be seen from the results.

Storage devices
The Minisforum AI X1 Pro uses a tried-and-tested SSD from Kingston, which has already been installed in numerous models from the manufacturer. It delivers consistently good, albeit not peak, values. The cooling of the mass storage works effectively, which is reflected in stable measurement results. A total of up to three M.2-2280 SSDs can be installed in the AI X1 Pro, other formats are not supported.

Graphics card and gaming performance
The iGPU of the Minisforum AI X1 Pro, the AMD Radeon 890M based on the RDNA3+ architecture, is the successor to the Radeon 780M . With additional computing units and higher clock rates, it offers a noticeable increase in performance. In our test, however, the advantage is smaller than possible, which is due to the single-channel RAM configuration. Even older iGPUs deliver more performance than our test sample from Minisforum. More iGPU performance is possible with a RAM expansion.

Emissions
System noise
The Minisforum AI X1 Pro uses a dual-fan design for cooling, with one fan specifically cooling the RAM modules. The waste heat from the SoC is dissipated via a heatpipe design. In idle mode, the mini PC works almost inaudibly, although it is never completely silent. Under load, the sound pressure level rises to 39.2 dB(A), which is noticeably quieter than many other Mini PCs in our comparison.

Speakers
In terms of sound, the Minisforum AI X1 Pro offers a surprisingly decent performance: the two integrated speakers deliver clear highs and balanced mids, while low frequencies remain restrained due to the design. Overall, the playback quality is more than solid for a mini PC and subjectively gains even more spatiality when set up vertically - a harmonious conclusion to the overall package.

Energy management
The AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 470 combines high computing power with an overall moderate energy requirement, which is also reflected in our efficiency analysis. However, our test sample does not perform better than the predecessor model.
Typical for mini PCs, the Minisforum AI X1 Pro is nevertheless economical: it is content with 5.5 to 9.1 watts in idle mode. Under normal load, we measured around 60 watts, with up to 93 watts possible for short periods. The integrated 135-watt power supply works reliably and offers sufficient reserves for additional drives.
