MSI Cubi NUC 1M mini PC review: Solid but pricier than the competition ↺
Performance-per-dollar could be better.
The Cubi NUC 1M doesn't necessarily do anything poorly, but it doesn't excel in any key category, either. Its high price of over $900 USD for the Core 7 configuration sticks out like a sore thumb against cheaper and faster alternatives.Allen Ngo 👁 Published 🇫🇷 🇪🇸 ...
Verdict — Reliable But Pricey
The Cubi NUC 1M is a well-built mini PC for office or conference room applications. It integrates dual Thunderbolt 4 ports and a MicroSD reader whereas most other mini PCs have just one Thunderbolt port and no SD reader at all. If your workloads can exploit these specific features on a daily basis, then the MSI mini PC can be a worthwhile option.
The Cubi NUC 1M is a basic office mini PC commanding a not-so-basic MSRP. Cheaper and faster alternatives are available if you don't mind losing the integrated MicroSD reader.
Pros
Cons
The main problem with the Cubi NUC 1M is instead its steep price of $800 USD for the just the Core i5 120U configuration or almost $1000 for our Core i7 configuration as reviewed. Alternatives from Beelink or GMK are several hundred dollars less while offering faster CPU options and similar chassis sizes. Value is therefore poorer than expected relative to the competition.
Price and Availability
The Cubi NUC 1M is now shipping on Amazon for $800 for the Core i5 configuration or $950 for the Core i7 option.

The MSI Cubi series fills in the gap left behind by Intel when they decided to end production for the own NUC series. It targets core business users and offices where low-profile PCs are preferred over high-performance alternatives.
Our test unit is the highest-end configuration with the Raptor Lake-U Refresh Core 7 150U CPU while lesser options are available with the Core 5 120U or Core 3 100U.
Alternatives to the Cubi NUC 1M include other low-profile U-series-powered mini PCs like the GMK NucBox M5 or Beelink Mini S12 Pro.

Specifications
Case
The chassis is mostly plastic with metal reinforcement around the inner lining of the sides. Although this adds some weight to the unit, it gives a higher sense of quality especially when many alternatives from Beelink or GMK use far fewer metal materials to save on costs.
The smooth matte black surface is unfortunately a huge fingerprint magnet. A white or silver color option similar to the business-centric MSI Prestige series would have mitigated this problem.
Connectivity
The system includes a decently fast integrated MicroSD card reader unlike on most other mini PCs which should appeal to some camera users and content creators. We also appreciate that there are two USB-C ports unlike on most Beelink mini PCs.
It's worth noting that the system can be powered on with third-party USB-C AC adapters should you ever lose the barrel-type AC adapter included in the box.

Maintenance
The bottom metal plate can be easily removed with just a Phillips screwdriver to reveal upgradeable components. Note that the screws are not thumbscrews unlike on many Intel NUC models.
Sustainability
MSI utilizes 42.9 percent post-consumer recycled plastics during manufacturing alongside sustainably sourced wood pulp for the packaging. Nonetheless, plastic wrapping is still used for the AC adapter and accessories.
Accessories And Warranty
A removable SATA III cable is included for users who want to connect an external 2.5-inch SATA III drive to a special port on the right side of the unit. It's not a very elegant solution, but at least the option is there whereas most other mini PCs are now omitting 2.5-inch SATA support altogether.
The standard one-year limited manufacturer warranty applies with the option to extend up to three years.
Performance
Testing Conditions
We set Windows and MSI Center to Performance mode prior to running the benchmarks below.
Processor
While the Core 7 150U is relatively new, it's based on the older Raptor Lake-U platform and so it performs very similarly to the outgoing Core i7-1365U. It lacks the integrated AI features and improved integrated Arc graphics of the Meteor Lake platform.
Dropping down to the Core 5 120U configuration is not expected to significantly impact processor performance since the two CPUs share the same number of cores and threads. if you're trying to save money, then the Core 5 SKU may be worth considering for this reason.

Stress Test
When initiating Prime95 stress, the CPU would boost to 2.6 GHz and 31 W lasting for just a few seconds before falling and stabilizing at 1.9 GHz and 20 W as shown by the screenshots below. Maximum Turbo Boost is not sustainable as to be expected from a U-series-powered PC.
Core temperature would stabilize at 69 C when running Cyberpunk 2077 compared to 72 C on the faster NucBox K9.

GPU Performance
The Iris Xe G7 96 EUs is now several years old and so it falls well behind most newer mini PCs running on Meteor Lake or Zen 4 or higher platforms. The Cubi NUC 1M is therefore more fit for streaming and light 2D games.
Running on Balanced mode instead of Performance mode does not appear to impact performance as their 3DMark scores would be nearly identical in our tests.
Dropping down to the Core 5 120U configuration is expected to impact graphics performance by about 10 to 20 percent as the Core 5 CPU is paired with the slower integrated Iris Xe 80 EUs instead.
X-Plane would fail to launch on our Cubi 1M unit and so its results are not available below.

The internal fan is always active at around 30 dB(A) at its baseline. The good news is that this is almost inaudible in a typical office or conference room environment. Additionally, the fan is relatively inert and so there are no sudden or high increases in RPMs when running even medium to medium-high loads.

Temperature
Unlike most other mini PCs, the Cubi NUC 1M lacks ventilation grilles on almost all sides except for the bottom and rear. However, the power-efficient U-series CPU means surface temperatures shouldn't be a problem regardless. The hot spot on top would remain below 30 C even when running demanding loads for long periods.
Energy Management
Power Consumption
Consumption is generally lower than most H-powered mini PCs especially when running demanding loads. Most notably, the system ships with a sizable 120 W AC adapter even though the mini PC barely draws half at 100 percent CPU utilization. The high overhead can be used to power Thunderbolt accessories or other external devices.
We would like to see a switch to universal USB-C AC adapters in the future much like on modern U-series powered laptops.
