Case
The housing of the Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Tiny workstation impresses with its compact, sophisticated, and modular design. With dimensions of just 179 x 183 x 37 mm, the P3 Tiny is one of the smallest workstations on the market. Despite its small size, the housing is robust and meets the strict MIL-STD-810H standards, which means that it remains reliable even under demanding conditions, such as vibrations or extreme temperatures. Metal is predominantly used in the choice of materials. Only the front panel is made of plastic. Visually, the Lenovo ThinkStation P3 tiny mini PC is comparable to other industrial PCs. The modular design is great and scores point in terms of sustainability. After all, various components can be easily replaced, making minor repairs possible.
Equipment
Despite its compact size, the Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Tiny workstation impresses with its versatile connectivity that meets the requirements of professional users. There are two USB-A and one USB-C port on the front to enable quick access to frequently used devices. The rear offers additional connectivity: there are three more USB-A ports here, which transfer data at 10 GBit/s at best. If you buy a small workstation without a dedicated graphics card, you can connect monitors either via DisplayPort or HDMI. Both connections are available natively. In our case with the Nvidia T1000 installed, the graphics card itself offers 4x Mini-DisplayPort 1.4a.
Communication
The Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Tiny is equipped with an Intel Wi-Fi 6E-AX211 wireless module. Connections can be established in the 5 GHz wireless network as well as in the faster 6 GHz frequency range. The transmission rates differed noticeably, so a 6 GHz connection should primarily be used. The WLAN module delivers very stable transmission rates in both tested frequency bands. We tested the wireless connection with the Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000. Alternatively, an RJ45 socket is also available for a wired network connection. Unfortunately, this is limited to a maximum of 1 GBit/s.
Accessories
Maintenance
The Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Tiny is available in many different configurations. There are differences in the processor, graphics card, and memory configuration. The large number of options enables the sophisticated, modular design. However, this also results in significant limitations, as only a few graphics cards fit into the small housing. For the RAM, Lenovo relies on space-saving SO-DIMM modules, which are used in most Mini PCs. RAM and SSD are easily accessible from the underside, as there is a maintenance flap here. The top, on the other hand, can be removed without tools. The dedicated graphics card and the processor's cooling unit are located underneath. Both are easily accessible and can be easily cleaned of dust.
Sustainability
The Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Tiny workstation is delivered in environmentally friendly packaging. Unfortunately, the manufacturer has not completely dispensed with the use of plastic, which would further improve the issue of sustainability. The modular design, which enables minor repairs, should be emphasized here. The Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Tiny has also been awarded the "EPEAT" certification.
Performance - Intel Core i9 with 24 cores and 32 threads
In the best configuration, Lenovo installs an Intel Core i9-14900 which, with its enormous performance, is an optimal solution for performance-hungry applications. Lenovo also packs a punch when it comes to RAM, because with 64 GB of RAM, there is plenty of memory, which means the workstation can also manage several virtual machines. And even when it comes to 3D performance, the Nvidia T1000 is not completely inferior.
Test conditions
We use the "Lenovo Optimized" energy profile for all performance tests with the Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Tiny. Lenovo does not offer any other options for customizing the system's performance for the mini PC. The processor's power limits can be adjusted via the XTU (Intel Extreme Tuning Utility) tool. Due to the compact design and the resulting cooling unit, we do not recommend increasing the values.
Processor
The Intel Core i9-14900 is an excellent choice in terms of computing power and is also the fastest model that Lenovo currently offers in its ThinkStation P3 Tiny. The processor is operated exactly according to Intel's specifications, which means that up to 219 watts are possible in Turbo mode. Under continuous load, the energy consumption then drops to a maximum of 65 watts. This results in slightly poorer multi-core results, although the single-core performance can almost keep up with an Intel Core i9-14900K. In the duel for the top spot, it is not quite enough to outperform the HP Z2 Mini G9 and the Minisforum G7 PT. In the average performance comparison, however, the gap between the two faster devices is negligible. With its 24 cores and 32 threads, the Intel Core i9-14900 is an extremely fast processor, which is certainly in good hands in a workstation.

Cinebench R15 Multi multi loop
The problem of the small cooling unit in combination with the powerful Intel Core i9-14900 becomes very clear in the Cinebench R15 multi-loop: The possible 219 watts were not even close to being reached, even though the power limit in the second half is only a maximum of 65 watts. Power Limit 1 (PL1) can then be kept at 65 watts permanently. In comparison with the competitors, this is only good enough for third place. The gap to the first-placed Minisforum G7 PT, however, is relatively large.
System performance
The performance losses that we observed in the Cinebench R15 loop have no lasting effects on the general system performance. In PCMark 10, our test sample came in slightly behind the Minisforum G7 PT and even just ahead of the HP Z2 Mini G9 in the ranking. Good results can be seen in the Crossmark test and the RAM tests based on AIDA64, among others. With 64 GB of RAM, the Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Tiny is excellently equipped. With DDR5-5200 MT/s, Lenovo pushes the technical specifications of the Intel Core i9-14900 completely. Intel specifies DDR5-5600 MT/s for this processor in its datasheet. In the performance comparison, however, our test sample can still place itself ahead of the HP Z2 Mini G9, even though it is also equipped with DDR5-5600 MT/s.

Mass storage
The Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Tiny is equipped with an SSD from Samsung. The installed model offers 1 TB of storage space and communicates via PCIe 4.0 x4, which achieves excellent transfer rates. No competitor delivers better performance, as can be seen from the results. The Samsung SSD in the Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Tiny also passes the stress test with flying colors. Performance drops are not to be expected under load. The Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Tiny offers space for two M.2 NVMe SSDs. The length is limited to 80 millimeters, so shorter or longer SSDs cannot be installed.

Graphics card - Nvidia GPU with 8 GB VRAM
The 3D calculations are performed by the dedicated Nvidia T1000 which offers special features as a professional workstation graphics card. This once again clearly underpins the purpose of the Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Tiny. However, the Nvidia T1000, which was introduced in 2021, is no longer brand new. Nevertheless, Lenovo has decided to install this model, which is ultimately also due to space constraints in the case. In a performance comparison, the economical 50-watt graphics card cannot keep up with the faster models of its competitors. In order to classify the performance advantage of the dedicated graphics card over the iGPU, we tested the HP Elite Mini 800 G9 in the comparison overview. Without the Nvidia T1000, the 3D performance drops noticeably, because, with the already-aged Intel UHD 770, the Intel Core i9-14900 is only equipped with a very slow iGPU.
In the render tests, the gap between the Nvidia T1000 and its rivals narrows slightly. The advantage of the professional graphics solution is based on special graphics card drivers that are incompatible with conventional consumer models.

Gaming performance
The Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Tiny is a workstation and therefore not the best choice when it comes to gaming. In order to better assess the performance of the Nvidia T1000, we nevertheless carried out some gaming tests with the test device. The small Nvidia T1000 can handle some games, although a reduction in detail fidelity is often unavoidable. While the Intel Arc A730 was clearly ahead in the synthetic tests, this changed noticeably in the gaming tests. The Nvidia T1000 can clearly catch up and partially beat the Intel graphics card.
In the stress test, the Nvidia T1000 delivers a stable result despite the low ventilation. We cannot detect a noticeable loss of performance under continuous load.

Temperature
Intel's current high-end desktop processors place high demands on the cooling units. In this respect, the compact design is not conducive to low CPU temperatures. The housing itself heats up noticeably under load. The processor reaches 100 °C without any problems. However, we also see that the maximum power consumption cannot be called up. The processor heats too quickly so that throttling sets in at just under 200 watts. In the further course, the Intel Core i9-14900 can then be operated stably at 65 watts in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications. The graphics card also suffers somewhat from the limited fresh air supply. However, we did not observe any loss of performance.
(-) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 46.1 °C / 115 F, compared to the average of 35.9 °C / 97 F, ranging from 21.6 to 69.5 °C for the class Mini PC.
(-) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 50.9 °C / 124 F, compared to the average of 36.5 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 27.1 °C / 81 F, compared to the device average of 32.4 °C / 90 F.

The Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Tiny is equipped with a small speaker, which is located directly behind the front. The speaker is sufficient for occasional everyday use, such as listening to music. However, the mono speaker cannot replace an external sound system.

Power consumption
We cannot attest to the Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Tiny's extreme frugality. We document comparatively high values in idle mode, which slightly worsens the overall average compared to the rivals. At 159 watts, we also note a comparatively high result under average load, which goes at the expense of the Intel Core i9-14900. The HP Z2 Mini G9 achieves a similar result here. The Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Tiny briefly reaches peaks of up to 315 watts, but this is not permanent. The large power supply is dimensioned with an output power of up to 300 watts. The power supply can easily cope with the brief overload. During the tests, we had no problems with an insufficient power supply.

Verdict - High performance and elevated emissions
As a very compact workstation, the Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Tiny delivers impressive performance. In combination with the Intel Core i9-14900 and an Nvidia T1000 lenovo squeezes a lot of performance into a very small space. It should be clear to everyone that this is not possible without compromises. If the manufacturer still manages to deliver adequate performance in the CPU benchmarks, the Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Tiny stands out negatively in terms of noise emissions. The 3D performance is also good, although the installed Nvidia T1000 is no longer one of the latest models. Due to the space restrictions, Lenovo is in a bit of a dilemma here, as there is not much choice. Nevertheless, the professional graphics card offers significantly more performance than the iGPU of the Intel Core i9-14900. Furthermore, the Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Tiny meets the requirements of a workstation in this combination.
The Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Tiny offers outstanding performance, but the manufacturer pays for this with high emission values. The CPU and GPU serve the workstation genre, although the connectivity is more reminiscent of a simple consumer PC.
The design of the Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Tiny is geared towards practicality, which is somewhat boring compared to its competitors in the consumer sector. Nevertheless, the case is sturdy and of high quality. Lenovo also scores points with its modular design, which has a positive effect on maintenance. Maintenance work is not a major obstacle and upgrades can also be carried out quickly. The tool-free opening and the modular design are certainly a plus point, although the connectivity is only promising at first glance. Unfortunately, the Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Tiny cannot offer Thunderbolt and USB4. The network connection is also not up to date with only one LAN port and GBit speed. We would have expected at least a 2.5 GBit LAN port here.
Note: We have recently updated our rating system and the results of version 8 are not comparable with the results of version 7. Further information can be found here.
