As a compact workstation, HP offers a rock-solid selection with the Z2 Mini G9 models. The modular design allows the manufacturer to provide a variety of system configurations. Here we have tested the HP Z2 Mini G9 with Intel Core i7-14700K and an Nvidia RTX A2000. There is also 32 GB RAM and a 1 TB SSD. The compact workstation is priced at around 1,950 euros (~US$2160). In the top configuration, the HP Z2 Mini G9 can also be equipped with an Intel Core i9-14900K and an Nvidia RTX A4000. However, you will have to budget just over 3,000 euros (~US$3680) for this.
We will now take a closer look at how well the HP Z2 Mini G9 performs in the test. As we haven't tested recently any compact workstation PCs with a dedicated graphics card, we are using alternative comparison devices. The Asus ROG NUC 14 is certainly the toughest challenger, as Asus also offers the mini PC without the ROG branding.

Case - Sturdy metal housing
With the Z2 Mini G9, HP relies on a very high-quality casing, which is largely made of metal. Only the front, which also serves as the fresh air intake, is made of plastic and fits perfectly into the overall look. The black metal surfaces give the device a pleasant tactile feel. However, the surfaces are a magnet for fingerprints, which become visible very quickly. All in all, the casing offers many options for equipping the Z2 Mini G9 with different configurations. This is due to the ingenious modular design. Even a dedicated graphics card can be installed.
Equipment
Although the HP Z2 Mini G9 is not necessarily very small, the number of external interfaces is relatively manageable. At first glance, we see many monitor ports on the rear, which are available due to the dedicated graphics card. The Nvidia RTX A2000 even comes with four miniDPs. In addition, the processor's iGPU can also be used for image output. Two DisplayPort interfaces are available on our test sample of the HP Z2 Mini G9. Half of the six USB ports are located on the rear and the other half are on the left side of the case. Only Type-A ports can be found on the rear, although two of the three interfaces are installed as Type-C ports on the side. Unfortunately, there is no USB4 or Thunderbolt functionality in our test configuration.
Due to its modular design, the HP Z2 Mini G9 can also be purchased with different connectivity options. Among other things, there is the option of accommodating additional DisplayPort intefaces. USB ports with USB4 speed or Thunderbolt are also mentioned in the technical documentation.
Communication
The HP Z2 Mini G9 is only equipped with one network socket, which only offers a maximum GBit speed. This is clearly not enough for a modern workstation. Wireless communication is even completely omitted, which is why we cannot provide performance data. If you are reliant on a wireless connection, you will have to use a USB Wi-Fi adapter.
Accessories
Maintenance
The HP Z2 Mini G9 is available in various configurations, which differ in terms of processor, graphics card, and memory configuration. The wide range of options is facilitated by the sophisticated modular design. Nevertheless, some limitations primarily relate to the graphics card. Only small models can be installed here due to the compact design. HP relies on space-saving SO-DIMM modules for the RAM. RAM and SSD are easily accessible and can even be removed without the tools. Cleaning the device is quick and easy thanks to the modular design.
Sustainability
The HP Z2 Mini G9 PCs are delivered in a nondescript cardboard box. However, the outer packaging is somewhat larger due to the accessories. The accessories are packed in separate plastic sleeves, which in our opinion could be improved in terms of sustainability. Once again, the modular design, which allows for minor repairs, should be emphasized. Various spare parts can be ordered directly from the manufacturer. As the manufacturer informed us on request, so-called ocean-bound plastic
is used for the production of the devices, which would otherwise have ended up in the oceans. The manufacturer also relies on innovative recycled raw materials such as used cooking oil, fishing nets, and coffee grounds. This is underpinned by various certifications from external partners such as "Blue Angel", "EPEAT" and "TCO".
Performance
Anyone who buys a workstation needs performance to complete special tasks. The Intel Core i7-14700K with its many computing cores offers an excellent basis for this. For 3D calculations, the HP Z2 Mini G9 in our test configuration is also equipped with an Nvidia RTX A2000. With 12 GB of VRAM, the dedicated graphics card has plenty of video memory. With the Nvidia RTX A4000, the HP Z2 Mini G9 can be equipped with an even more powerful graphics card.
Test conditions
We use the "HP Optimized" energy profile for all performance tests with the HP Z2 Mini G9. HP itself does not offer any options for customizing the system's performance. However, the processor's power limits can be adjusted via the XTU (Intel Extreme Tuning Utility) tool. We do not recommend increasing the values. This is because the power consumption is too high and the power supply and cooling unit are not designed for this.
Processor
The Intel Core i7-14700K is an excellent choice in terms of computing power to handle even power-hungry tasks. However, due to the small cooling unit, HP has to reduce the processor's power consumption somewhat. Nevertheless, the manufacturer allows a maximum power consumption of up to 253 watts for a short time. However, we never reached this value in the test - that much can be revealed at this point. There is a further power gradation at 150 watts, although the Intel Core i7-14700K has 90 watts available under continuous load.
The performance comparison shows a close race with the Minisforum G7 PT which is equipped with an AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX. Intel performs slightly better in some tests, although the AMD processors perform better in others. In the end, however, neither of them can stand out. The HP Z2 Mini G9 has a slightly larger lead over the Asus ROG NUC 14. Our test sample delivers a better performance than the Intel Core Ultra 9 185H on average 20 percent more performance.

Cinebench R15 Multi loop
The problem of the small cooling unit in combination with the power-hungry Intel Core i7-14700K is clearly evident in the Cinebench R15 multi loop: The possible 253 watts are not even close to being reached, even though the power limit in the second half is only a maximum of 150 watts. The 90 watts can then be maintained permanently. In comparison with its rivals, this is only enough for second place. The gap to the first-placed Minisforum G7 PT is relatively large.
System performance
The performance losses that we observed under full load do not have a significant impact on the overall system performance. In PCMark 10, however, the HP Z2 Mini G9 is again beaten by the Minisforum G7PT. Slightly better results can be seen in the Crossmark test and the RAM tests based on AIDA64. The HP Z2 Mini G9 is equipped with DDR5-5600, which is in line with Intel's specifications. As a workstation, however, we would have expected the use of ECC RAM.

DPC latencies
The HP Z2 Mini G9 struggles with DPC latencies that are clearly too high. Only the Asus ROG NUC 14 performs even worse. Even when simply surfing the internet, we document increased values, which increase even further during 4K playback.

Mass storage
The HP Z2 Mini G9 is equipped with an SSD with 1 TB of storage space from Kioxia. In the test, the built-in mass storage device delivered excellent values. None of the comparison devices can keep up and deliver better performance. However, not everything is perfect, as can be seen from the continuous performance: Even after a short load, the performance of the SSD drops steadily. The tight design, directly under the dedicated graphics card, and the insufficient supply of fresh air result in poor values. The passive heat sink already installed by the manufacturer is not sufficient here. The HP Z2 Mini G9 offers space for two M.2 NVMe SSDs. The length is limited to 80 millimeters. Shorter or longer SSDs can therefore not be accommodated.

Graphics card - Nvidia GPU with 12 GB VRAM
The graphics card HP uses in the Z2 Mini G9 is an Nvidia RTX A2000 with 12 GB VRAM. That sounds good and underpins its use as a workstation. After all, we are looking at a professional graphics solution here, which was missing in the Minisforum MS-01. In comparison with this competitor, the HP workstation has an easy time asserting itself in all tests. However, the pure 3D performance is clearly inferior to the gaming devices. Even an Intel Arc A730M can clearly set itself apart in the 3DMark tests.
With regard to the render tests, however, the gap between the Nvidia RTX A2000 and its competitors narrows considerably. In the overall comparison, we see a similar performance here as with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 laptop, which is used in the Asus ROG NUC 14. The advantage of the professional graphics solution is based on special drivers, which are incompatible with the consumer models.
If the performance of the Nvidia RTX A2000 is not sufficient, the HP Z2 Mini G9 can also be combined with an Nvidia RTX A4000. This graphics card is also available in a special SFF format and even offers 20 GB of VRAM.

Gaming performance
Although the HP Z2 Mini G9 is a pure workstation, we still tested some games with the system for performance comparison. Basically, the system allows gaming with a variety of titles. If you don't necessarily want to play the latest games in maximum quality, you can occasionally enjoy a game or two with the workstation. In the CPU limit, the system benefits from the excellent single-core performance, although the graphics card has to sacrifice performance significantly in the GPU limit. However, we cannot detect a complete failure. The performance is often significantly better than with an Intel Arc A730M.
In contrast to the CPU and SSD, we see stable 3D performance from the Nvidia A2000 under load. The 70 watts of the graphics card can be dissipated well without the risk of a performance loss due to excessive temperatures.

Emissions - Small, powerful and loud
Noise emissions
Although HP limits the Intel Core i7-14700K's power consumption, the system cannot be ignored under load. When the processor of the HP Z2 Mini G9 operates at 150 watts, we note a clearly audible 55.9 dB(A) under load. The power consumption is then throttled to 90 watts, which has a positive effect on the noise level. The noise emission then drops to around 42.5 dB(A). At least the fan noise is not high-frequency, which makes the noise level under load somewhat more bearable. In idle mode, the system is very quiet; however, silent operation is a long way off. The poorly tuned fan curve, which fluctuates greatly under partial load, is somewhat unattractive. In the test, we documented a sound pressure level of 46 to 51.5 dB(A).

Temperature
Intel's high-end desktop processors already reach high temperatures in conventional desktop PCs with large cooling units. We are therefore not surprised that we also easily reach 100 °C under load in the HP Z2 Mini G9. At peak load, we briefly reach over 200 watts, which results in a high temperature. The temperatures are put into perspective somewhat under continuous load, and the CPU temperature then stabilizes at just under 80 °C on average. Due to the narrow design, the graphics card cannot draw attention to itself with low-temperature values either. However, the Nvidia RTX A2000 completes the stress test with a stable power consumption of 70 watts.
(+) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 37.6 °C / 100 F, compared to the average of 36 °C / 97 F, ranging from 21.6 to 69.5 °C for the class Mini PC.
(±) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 42.4 °C / 108 F, compared to the average of 36.5 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 26.2 °C / 79 F, compared to the device average of 32.5 °C / 91 F.
(±) 3: The average temperature for the upper side is 33.7 °C / 93 F, compared to the average of 32.5 °C / 91 F for the class Mini PC.
Speaker
The HP Z2 Mini G9 PC is equipped with a small speaker on the front. The speaker is certainly sufficient for occasional everyday use, such as listening to music. However, the mono speaker cannot replace an external sound system.

Power consumption
Unfortunately, the HP Z2 Mini G9 is not one of the most economical devices. Our test sample can still score with comparatively good values in idle mode, although it clearly requires more energy under load. Under average load, we measured just under 171 watts, which is significantly more than its competitors. In terms of efficiency, the built-in desktop processor cannot keep up with the economical processors of the competitors either.
The power supply unit is specified with 280 watts. However, the maximum power consumption in our tests was slightly higher at 289 watts. Most power supply units offer a certain buffer to be able to absorb more load for a short time. We had no problems with the power supply during our tests. Nevertheless, it would certainly be better to deliver the HP Z2 Mini G9 with a 300 watt power supply.

Verdict - High performance at the expense of emissions
The HP Z2 Mini G9 is perfectly suitable as a compact workstation. In addition to the powerful CPU, the manufacturer installs a professional graphics card, which can really show its advantages in the right combination. The Intel Core i7-14700K is fast enough to master all conceivable scenarios. Nevertheless, the processor cannot develop its full potential due to the limited cooling unit. In terms of 3D performance, the Nvidia RTX A2000 has a bit of a disadvantage, but in combination with professional rendering tasks, the small and economical graphics card is quite convincing.
The compact design certainly offers some advantages, although there are also some disadvantages. First and foremost is the noise level under load. However, the HP Z2 Mini G9 is not a complete failure. The question of whether it makes sense to install powerful processors, which cannot develop their full potential, in such a small system is quite justified. After all, Intel also offers somewhat more economical non-K or T models. These would be easier to cool and, as a positive side effect, the device would be somewhat quieter under load. The HP Z2 Mini G9 is also criticized for its connectivity. Only one RJ45 is simply not enough for a modern workstation. In addition, there is only GBit speed, which is also not up to date and WLAN is completely omitted. At least antennas are pre-installed and a WLAN module can be retrofitted. With a device that costs almost 2,000 euros, it is simply not right to save on a 30-euro WLAN module.
The HP Z2 Mini G9 delivers outstanding performance at the cost of high emission values. The CPU and GPU fit into the workstation genre, which unfortunately cannot be said of the connectivity.
The very sturdy metal housing, which leaves an extremely high-quality impression, is a positive highlight. The tool-free opening and the modular design are another plus points where we can set HP apart from the competition. In addition, there are many different configurations to put the system together according to your own wishes. Devices from the Far East do not offer this choice. Another important point is the support, which is also good at HP.
Note: We have recently updated our rating system and the results of version 8 are not comparable with the results of version 7. Further information can be found here.
Price and availability
The HP Z2 Mini G9 is available in our test configuration for 1,954 euros at Notebooksbilliger. The top configuration with Intel Core i9-14900K and Nvidia RTX A4000 can also be ordered from Notebokksbilliger. However, at 3,318 euros, the top model comes with a hefty price tag.
