HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 convertible review: Lighter than expected
Verdict — Spectre-Like Without The Spectre Price
The HP Spectre x360 14 is one of our favorite 14-inch convertibles. Unfortunately, the latest model can retail for close to $2000 which is probably a lot more than what most users are willing to spend on a new laptop right now. The OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 can be seen as the next best alternative as it inherits a lot of what makes the Spectre model great but for several hundred dollars less. The 120 Hz OLED touchscreen, Intel's extremely efficient Lunar Lake CPU, classy metal design, sharp 9 MP webcam, and surprisingly portable weight help distinguish the OmniBook from most others in its size category.
Power users, however, may still want to consider the pricier Spectre x360 14 instead or the OmniBook Ultra 14 clamshell. The Lunar Lake platform sacrifices a bit of raw performance in order to meet more lofty battery life and portability goals which all apply to the OmniBook Ultra Flip 14. We're also not a fan of the shallow and extra-sensitive clickpad when compared to the firmer clickpads on the Spectre or OmniBook Ultra 14 clamshell. Even so, travelers and occasional editors may find a lot of value from the OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 as they can best exploit the small size and 120 Hz P3 touchscreen.

Details here
The OmniBook Ultra 14 Flip is the convertible version of the OmniBook Ultra 14 clamshell. Despite their similar names, however, they have numerous differences both inside and out including even vastly different processor options.
Our test unit is the higher-end configuration with the Core Ultra 7 258V Lunar Lake CPU, 16 GB soldered RAM, and 1800p OLED touchscreen for approximately $1600 USD or $1200 if on sale. A lesser Core Ultra 7 256V version is also available, but all options ship with the same OLED panel.
Competitors in this space include other high-end 14-inch convertibles like the MSI Summit E14 Flip Evo, Asus ZenBook Flip 14, or Lenovo Yoga 7 2-in-1 14IML9.

Specifications
Case
The chassis consists of mostly smooth aluminum alloy for similar first impressions as the OmniBook Ultra clamshell or Spectre x360 14. It even adopts the "diamond-cut" rear corners as found on the latter design.
Perhaps most surprising about the model is how thin and lightweight it is. The system is more portable than many competing convertibles including the Lenovo Yoga 7 2-in-1 14, Asus ZenBook Flip 14, or the Dell Latitude 9450 2-in-1.
Connectivity
There are only USB-C ports available unlike on the EliteBook x360 1040 G11. All are compatible with charging and video-out, but only two are compatible with Thunderbolt 4 devices.
Communication
The Intel BE201 comes standard for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity. The model lacks WAN or 5G support to help distinguish itself from the pricier Elite series.

Webcam
The 9 MP webcam produces sharper images than on most competitors from Lenovo or especially Dell. Colors, however, still aren't the most accurate.
Both IR and a physical webcam shutter come standard.
Maintenance
The bottom panel is secured by just four Torx screws for easy servicing. However, only the battery and M.2 SSD are removable as the WLAN and RAM modules are soldered.
Sustainability
The speakers and bezel are manufactured with ocean-bound plastic while the outer cover consists of recycled metal. Portions of the keyboard are also manufactured with post-consumer recycled plastic.
The packaging is fully recyclable with almost no plastic.
Accessories And Warranty
The retail box includes an active stylus in addition to the usual paperwork and USB-C AC adapter. A one-year limited manufacturer warranty applies if purchased in the US.
Input Devices
Keyboard
Keyboard layout is identical to the OmniBook Ultra 14 clamshell for essentially the same typing experience.
Touchpad
The smooth clickpad is more spacious than on the OmniBook Ultra 14 clamshell (13.9 x 8.8 cm vs. 12.5 x 8 cm) for more comfortable multi-touch inputs. However, travel is very shallow and feedback is relatively weak and quiet for an unsatisfying feel.
Display
The OLED panel here supports a fast native refresh rate of 120 Hz compared to only 90 Hz and 60 Hz on the Asus ZenBook Flip 14 and MSI Summit E14 Flip, respectively. Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) is also supported down to 48 Hz which we recommend when playing most 3D games to reduce frame tearing.
Brightness maxes out at about 363 nits when on SDR mode or 585 nits when on HDR mode.

Colors are preset to sRGB even though the panel supports full DCI-P3 colors. Accuracy is otherwise excellent all around with average DeltaE values of well under 2 for both grayscale and colors.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)
Screen flickering / PWM detected | 469 Hz Amplitude: 33.3 % | ≤ 100 % brightness setting | |
The display backlight flickers at 469 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 100 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting. The frequency of 469 Hz is relatively high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering. However, there are reports that some users are still sensitive to PWM at 500 Hz and above, so be aware. In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 8684 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 343500) Hz was measured. |
Outdoor visibility is decent but worse than on the Dell Latitude 9450 2-in-1 which sports a brighter OLED panel.
Performance
Testing Conditions
We set MyHP to Performance mode prior to running the benchmarks below unless otherwise stated.
Processor
Processor performance is good but not great as Lunar Lake emphasizes performance-per-watt over raw power. The Core Ultra 7 258V is comparable with the older Core Ultra 7 165U which is sufficient for target applications related to office, browsing, and the occasional video editing.
Opting for the lesser Core Ultra 7 256V configuration is not expected to impact processor performance based on our time with the recent XPS 13 9350.

Stress Test
When initiating Prime95 stress on Performance mode, the CPU would boost to 3.5 GHz and 38 W before reaching 99 C about 20 seconds later. It would then drop slightly to 3.3 GHz and 29 W to maintain a cooler core temperature of 88 C. If running on Balanced mode, everything becomes reduced to 2.8 GHz, 22 W, and 79 C.
Core temperature when running Cyberpunk 2077 would stabilize at 78 C compared to 95 C on the Elite x360 1040 G11 2-in-1 with slower Arc 8 graphics.

System Performance
PCMark results are excellent save for the somewhat low Productivity score which is tied to the mediocre processor performance. AIDA64 memory scores are notably very high due to the unique on-package RAM design of Lunar Lake.

Storage Devices
Our unit ships with the Samsung PM9A1 MZVL22T0HBLB PCIe4 x4 NVMe SSD offering theoretical transfer rates of over 7000 MB/s. Unfortunately, the drive has issues maintaining such speeds and so real-world performance will be slower as exemplified by our DiskSpd loop test results below. The MSI Prestige 16 B1MG, which ships with the same drive, can run the SSD much faster.
