Lenovo Yoga 7 2-in-1 14IML9 convertible review: Classy for under $700

The Yoga 7 2-in-1 14 is a midrange convertible sitting in between the lower-end IdeaPad Flex 14 series and higher-end Yoga 9 14 series. The 2024 model succeeds last year's version by switching up several external features alongside the expected CPU upgrade to Intel Meteor Lake.
Our unit in review is an entry-level configuration with the Core Ultra 5 125U and 1200p IPS display for approximately $680. Pricier configurations come with the faster Core Ultra 7 155H and 1800p OLED for $1200, but we certainly appreciate Lenovo for sending us the base configuration instead as lower-end SKUs are usually underrepresented and ignored by most reviewers.
Competitors in this space include other midrange 14-inch convertibles like the Dell Inspiron 14 7445 2-in-1, HP Envy x360 2-in-1 14, or Asus VivoBook Flip 14.

Case — MIl-STD-810H Certified
Yoga laptops are recognizable for their convex edges especially around the base whereas the edges on most other laptops are flat. The 2024 Yoga 7 2-in-1 14 inherits the chassis design of the 2022 model but with several differences along the rear and bottom panel where the ventilation grilles, rubber feet, and speaker grilles have been redone. Otherwise, any visual differences are minor between the two models when looking at the units from the front.
Chassis rigidity and build quality are excellent with no creaking and only minimal warping when applying pressure down the keyboard center or outer lid. The hinges, however, could use improvement as they begin to weaken and teeter when opened to wider angles. The hinges on the Inspiron 14 7445 2-in-1 feel stronger and more uniform at all angles in comparison for a better sense of longevity.
Overall dimensions are nearly identical to the pricier Yoga 9 2-in-1 14. The main difference between the two models instead lies in their weight as the Yoga 7 2-in-1 14 is noticeably heavier by around 300 g which can be a chore when traveling. It's still lighter than the Inspiron 14 7445 2-in-1, but other competing models like the Envy x360 2-in-1 14 or Vivobook Flip 14 are each lighter.
Connectivity
All ports on the 2022 Yoga 7 14 2-in-1 have returned albeit rearranged. Although we appreciate the dual Thunderbolt 4 ports, it would have been nice to separate them between the two sides of the laptop like on the Razer Blade 14 for more freedom when it comes to charging and connecting external monitors. Competing models like the Inspiron 14 7445 2-in-1 or Envy x360 2-in-1 14 also integrate more USB-A ports than on our Lenovo.

Webcam
The 2 MP webcam, IR sensor, and physical shutter for privacy remain the same as on the 2022 design.

Maintenance
The bottom panel can be removed relatively easily with a Torx screwdriver and sharp edge. There isn't much to upgrade once inside as the RAM modules are soldered and there is no support for secondary SSDs. Note that the primary SSD must be 42 mm or shorter as 80 mm drives are not supported.
Sustainability
The packaging is plastic-free and fully recyclable.
Accessories And Warranty
The retail box includes the paperwork and AC adapter. A one-year limited manufacturer warranty applies if purchased in the US.
Input Devices — Yoga In Name, IdeaPad In Feel
Keyboard
There is a conscious effort from Lenovo to equip its ThinkPad models with the best keyboards while the consumer-oriented IdeaPad and Yoga models get lesser keyboards. The differences are noticeable when typing as the keys on the Yoga 7 2-in-1 14 are shallower and with softer feedback than the firmer keys on a typical ThinkPad. While not terrible by any means, it would have still been nice to see some improvements to the keyboard for a better typing experience. The keys on the Envy x360 14, for example, are firmer and deeper than the keys on our Yoga for a more satisfying feel.
Touchpad
Clickpad size remains the same as on last year's model at 12 x 7.5 cm. Users would have to consider upgrading to the pricier Yoga 9 2-in-1 14 model for a larger 13.5 x 8 cm surface area. Even so, the size of the current clickpad is satisfactory for the 14-inch screen size. We especially appreciate the loud and clicky feedback when pressed whereas the clickpads on most other laptops tend to be softer and quieter.
Display — Solid Panel Options
Three touchscreen options are available as follows:
- 1920 x 1200, IPS, 300 nits, 40% DCI-P3, 60 Hz
- 1920 x 1200, OLED, 400 nits, 100% DCI-P3, 60 Hz, DisplayHDR
- 2880 x 1800, OLED, 400 nits, 100% DCI-P3, 120 Hz, DisplayHDR
Image quality is crisp even with our base IPS configuration, but the limited colors and mediocre refresh rate don't hold a candle to the latest 120 Hz OLED panels such as the one available on the HP Envy x360 2-in-1. Luckily, Lenovo offers this higher-end panel for an extra cost which is recommended if you plan of doing a lot of image editing and video playback. Limited HDR support is available only on the OLED options.

The IPS display does not come pre-calibrated and so colors at lower saturation levels tend to be inaccurate as a result. Calibrating with our X-Rite colorimeter addresses this issue by improving the average grayscale deltaE from 5.0 to 2.0, but colors at higher saturation levels will never improve on this panel due to the limited color profile mentioned above. Applying our calibrated ICM profile above is still recommended nonetheless.

Though the 14-inch convertible form factor makes the model handy for outdoor environments, the screen was not designed for bright ambient conditions as maximum brightness is only around 300 to 400 nits. Glare is subsequently unavoidable under most conditions outside of the office or living room. You'll have to spend a lot more on alternative models like the HP EliteBook 840 where 1000-nit panel options are available if outdoor visibility is priority.

Testing Conditions
We set Lenovo Vantage and Windows to Performance mode prior to running the benchmarks below. Unlike Dell, the Lenovo software does not have a feature to sync its power profiles to the Windows power profiles which can make changing profiles a chore.
Processor
The Core Ultra 5 125U may be the least expensive option for the Yoga 7 2-in-1 14, but it's not slow by any means. Raw multi-thread performance is ahead of last year's common Core i7-1355U by a respectable 20 to 25 percent. Upgrading to the Core Ultra 7 155U is only expected to boost performance by about 5 to 10 percent meaning that you would have to make the jump to either the Core Ultra 5 125H or Core Ultra 7 155H to see any significant performance advantages.
Competing U-series CPUs can be noticeably faster than the Core Ultra 5 125U including the Ryzen 7 7840U or older Ryzen 7 6800U. The Core Ultra 5 125U is therefore more neck-to-neck with CPUs from the Ryzen 5 family including the Ryzen 5 7530U.
Performance sustainability is decent when running CineBench R15 xT in a loop. Our initial score of 1657 points would dip by about 15 percent after just one to two repetitions as shown by the comparison graph below. The deficit may be larger if configuring with a Core Ultra H series CPU.

Stress Test
The CPU would boost to 2.8 GHz and 41 W when initiating Prime95 stress until reaching a core temperature of 88 C a few seconds later. Thereafter, it would drop and stabilize at 1.8 GHz and 23 W in order to maintain a cooler core temperature of 70 C. These results are both slower and cooler than what we recorded on the Yoga 9 2-in-1 14 equipped with the faster Core Ultra 7 155H. Configuring with the Core Ultra H CPU may therefore lead to warmer temperatures than what we've recorded here on our Core Ultra U review unit.
Running Cyberpunk 2077 to represent gaming load would again result in a core temperature of 70 C. Repeating this test on the heavier Inspiron 14 7445 2-in-1 with the faster integrated Radeon 780M would result in cooler temperatures across the board.

System Performance
PCMark scores are lower than on the 2022 AMD model due to our slower Core Ultra 5 CPU and Arc 4 GPU when compared to the Ryzen 7 6800U and Radeon 680M. Upgrading to the Ultra 7 155H configuration should boost the 2024 model ahead of its predecessor based on our time with the Yoga 9 2-in-1 14IMH9.
RAM performance is slightly faster this year at 7467 MHz versus 6400 MHz on the 2022 model and our higher AIDA64 scores reflect this.

The M.2 2242 Samsung PM9C1a in our unit is a significant improvement over the Kioxia BG5 in the 2022 model as it offers over 2x the performance with no throttling issues. The latter is particularly noteworthy as shorter M.2 2242 SSDs tend to throttle more often than full-length 80 mm drives.

GPU Performance — Iris Xe Vibes
The integrated 4-core Arc performs most similarly to last year's Iris Xe 96 EUs that was popular on many Raptor Lake and Alder Lake laptops. Upgrading to the Core Ultra 5 125H or Core Ultra 7 155H configuration is expected to increase graphics performance significantly by about 50 to 60 percent since Core H Meteor Lake CPUs come with more powerful Arc 7 or Arc 8 graphics instead. Upgrading to Core H is recommended if you plan on gaming with the Yoga 7 2-in-1 14.

System Noise — A Quiet Machine
Fan noise is not an issue with our configuration. The system does a great job at remaining quiet for as long as possible even when higher loads are introduced. When running 3DMark 06, for example, the internal fan would ramp up very slowly up to 30 dB(A) by the end of the first benchmark scene compared to 35 dB(A) or louder on the Envy x360 2-in-1 14 or Yoga 9 2-in-1 14. More demanding loads like games would induce a fan noise of up to 41 dB(A) which is a similar ceiling as most other 14-inch convertibles.
Configuring with the a more powerful Core Ultra H CPU will likely increase fan activity.

Temperature
Surface temperatures are warmest on the left half of the chassis than the right with the warmest and coolest areas reaching 38 C and 27 C, respectively. The warm region is unfortunately near the WASD keys which is unfavorable when gaming or typing. In comparison, the Dell Inspiron 14 7445 2-in-1 has its warmest region nearest the keyboard center where palms and fingers do not rest on. Even so, we never found the Lenovo to be uncomfortably warm during use.
(+) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 38 °C / 100 F, compared to the average of 35.4 °C / 96 F, ranging from 19.6 to 60 °C for the class Convertible.
(+) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 39.6 °C / 103 F, compared to the average of 36.8 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 28.2 °C / 83 F, compared to the device average of 30.3 °C / 87 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 31.6 °C / 88.9 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(-) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 27.9 °C / 82.2 F (-3.7 °C / -6.7 F).

Energy Management
Power Consumption
The system is very efficient particularly when idling where consumption is no more than 6 W even when on the maximum brightness setting. Configuring with Core Ultra H or OLED, however, will increase consumption as exemplified by our Yoga 9 2-in-1 14 in the comparison table below.
Consumption would remain lower than competing 14-inch convertibles when running higher loads like games, but keep in mind that our unit also comes with a much slower GPU. Running Cyberpunk 2077 would demand 41 W on average to be 18 percent lower than on the much faster Yoga 9 2-in-1 14.
We're able to record a temporary maximum draw of 65 W from the small (~9 x 4.7 x 2.7 cm) 65 W USB-C AC adapter when the CPU is at 100 percent utilization.

Battery Life — Go-Time From The Get-Go
Battery capacity has not changed from the 2022 Yoga 7 2-in-1 design. Runtimes, however, have increased significantly from almost 10 hours on the 2022 AMD model to over 16 hours on our 2024 Intel model. The massive bump can be attributed to the IPS display and Core U-series CPU whereas our 2022 model was equipped with the more demanding OLED option. Our Yoga 7 2-in-1 14IML9 review configuration is subsequently one of the longest-lasting 14-inch convertibles available. Keep in mind that configuring with an H-series CPU and OLED touchscreen will reduce battery life.
Charging from empty to full capacity takes a little over 90 minutes.

Verdict — Great Value Even At The Base Level
The Yoga 7 2-in-1 14 retails between $700 as reviewed up to $1200 if fully configured with the Core Ultra 7 155H CPU and OLED display. The model offers a lot for the money at the base level including the convertible form factor, attractive metal design, very long battery life, IPS display, and a modern CPU with integrated AI support. Nothing about the model feels cheap and the base configuration is more than capable of running everyday multimedia and browsing tasks. It's an easy recommendation for the majority of home users on tight budgets.
More demanding users who occasionally game and edit or want the best multimedia experience should consider upgrading to the higher-end SKUs with the Core Ultra 7 155H and OLED panel. At this point, however, the price tag increases rather dramatically and the model no longer becomes as good of a deal. For example, the $1200 asking price can also get you a ZenBook 14 OLED or HP Spectre x360 14 both of which are sleeker flagship models from their respective manufacturers. The Lenovo model arguably becomes less attractive.
The 2024 Yoga 7 2-in-1 14 is an excellent deal at the base configuration. However, competition grows fierce if configuring with higher-end options.
For future revisions, we'd like to see improvements made to the hinges and aging keyboard. While they're decent enough for the base configuration, our expectations become higher at the pricier configurations where Lenovo is demanding well over a grand.
