Razer Blade 14 2024 laptop review: Futureproofing with Ryzen AI
Since the 2023 Blade 14 was already a significant update to the 2022 model, the latest 2024 model is a relatively minor update over the 2023 model. The newest version replaces the "Phoenix" Ryzen 9 7940HS CPU on the 2023 model with the "Hawk Point" Ryzen 9 8945HS. Otherwise, nearly everything else about the 2024 model remains the same as the 2023 model and so we recommend checking out our review on the 2023 model to learn more about the physical features of the Blade 14.
Our test unit is the highest-end configuration equipped with the aforementioned Zen 4 CPU, 32 GB of removable DDR5-5600 RAM, 140 W GeForce RTX 4070 GPU, and 1600p 240 Hz IPS display for approximately $2700 USD. Lesser SKUs ship with the RTX 4060 instead, but all 2024 configurations come with the same Ryzen 9 CPU and display. The Mercury color option is only available with RTX 4070 graphics.
Alternatives to the Blade 14 include other 14-inch gaming laptops like the Lenovo Legion Slim 5 14, Acer Predator Triton 14, Dell Alienware x14, or the popular Asus Zephyrus G14.

Communication
The wireless module has been upgraded from the Qualcomm WCN685x to the Qualcomm FastConnect 7800 for Wi-Fi 7 compatibility. The vast majority of users will not benefit from the new features of the chip since Wi-Fi 7 routers are not yet commonplace. Thus, its inclusion is more about future-proofing for when or if owners decide to upgrade their home networks to Wi-Fi 7.
We experienced no connectivity issues or instability when paired to our Asus AXE11000 Wi-Fi 6E test router.

Maintenance
There are no major internal differences between the 2024 and 2023 models.
Display — IPS For Gaming And Content Creation
Interestingly, the panel on this year's Blade 14 model is different than on last year's model (TL140ADXP04-0 vs. B140QAN06.U). The new panel is slightly dimmer when measured with our colorimeter, but everything else including the fast response times, full DCI-P3 colors, 240 Hz refresh rate, and ~1300:1 contrast ratio remain essentially the same for a similar year-over-year viewing experience.
Note that FreeSync Premium is supported but not G-Sync just like on last year's model.

All units come pre-calibrated to better exploit the wide color coverage of the panel. Our particular unit has an average grayscale and color deltaE value of just 1.6 and 2.23, respectively, against the P3 standard as shown by our CalMAN results below. An end-user calibration is therefore not necessary for most users.

Performance
Testing Conditions
We set the system to Turbo mode and dGPU mode via the pre-installed Synapse software prior to running the benchmarks below. Performance decreases if set to Balanced mode as detailed in the GPU Performance section.
New to Synapse this year is the MUX toggle whereas the older version on the 2023 model had no such option. The power profiles have also been streamlined with a new "Turbo" option instead of individual settings for the CPU and GPU.
Processor — Ryzen 9 7940HS In Disguise
The Ryzen 9 8945HS is a rebranded Ryzen 9 7940HS at its core. Both processors target similar clock rates with identical caches sizes and core count manufactured under the same Zen 4 platform. Thus, it's not surprising that CPU-intensive benchmarks produce nearly identical scores across the board for both processors. For traditional tasks like video encoding, file compression, or gaming, the 2024 Blade 14 holds only marginal advantages over the 2023 model at best.
The main difference between the Ryzen 9 8945HS and 7940HS instead lies in the faster integrated NPU on the newer processor to enable Windows Studio Effects such as webcam automatic framing, eye contact correction, and background blurring. However, such features have been available on Intel-based laptops for at least a year and so they aren't exactly new. The automatic framing also doesn't pair well with the low resolution 2 MP webcam on the Razer; HP offers the same feature but with a higher resolution 5 MP webcam for clearer panning and zooming.
Other than Windows Studio Effects, the integrated NPU in the Ryzen 9 8945HS should also be able to run Microsoft Co-Pilot locally instead of relying on cloud and internet connectivity. Results would be produced almost instantaneously in this way as opposed to several seconds on older processors. Unfortunately, Co-Pilot as of this writing is completely cloud based with no option to run locally or offline meaning you can't even use the fancy new NPU for what it was designed to do. This is expected to change in the future when AI applications mature, of course, but the NPU as of early 2024 is extremely limited.

Stress Test
When looking closer at the real-time vitals of the system, we can see why the GPU in the 2024 model consistently outperforms the 2023 model even though both utilize the same RTX 4070 graphics. The GPU in the newer Blade 14 would stabilize at a higher TGP of 114 W compared to just 87 W on last year's model when running games on Turbo mode. Both GPU clock rates (2550 MHz vs. 2310 MHz) and core temperature (76 C vs. 67 C) are consequently higher on the newer model. Dropping down to Balanced mode would lower the TGP and GPU clock rate just slightly to 103 W and 2475 MHz, respectively, but both temperature and fan noise are lowered as well for a quieter gaming experience.
Note that while Razer advertises a maximum TGP of 140 W, this target is unsustainable in most conditions. Instead, a constant GPU power of 114 W when gaming is a more accurate expectation of the 2024 Blade 14.
The Ryzen 9 8945HS CPU would stabilize at nearly the same core clock rates, temperature, and package power as the Ryzen 9 7940HS on last year's model when running Prime95 stress. The results complement our CineBench observations above where both processors would return nearly identical performance numbers. Turbo Core clock rate, temperature, and power draw would peak at 4.7 GHz, 97 C, and 90 W, respectively, only for the first few seconds of the stress test before falling and stabilizing at slightly lower values as shown in the table below.
CPU Clock (GHz) | GPU Clock (MHz) | Average CPU Temperature (°C) | Average GPU Temperature (°C) | |
System Idle | -- | -- | 46 | 45 |
Prime95 Stress | 4.4 | -- | 87 | 49 |
Prime95 + FurMark Stress | 4.1 | 1980 | 90 | 75 |

System Performance
PCMark results are within single-digit percentage points of the 2023 model to show that everyday tasks like browsing and light editing are not noticeably faster on the latest model. RAM performance is consistently faster than before, however, which can help boost gaming performance even if just marginally.

GPU Performance
Despite running on the same 140 W mobile GeForce RTX 4070 GPU as the 2023 model, 3DMark graphics scores have increased by almost 10 percent. Results are consistently higher than even the larger MSI Raider GE68 HX equipped with the same RTX 4070 GPU. Note that the system must be on Performance mode in order to achieve the better-than-expected results. Otherwise, running on Balanced mode would cause overall performance to drop by as much as 11 percent according to our Fire Strike results table below.
Power Profile | Graphics Score | Physics Score | Combined Score |
Performance Mode | 33451 | 29228 | 14940 |
Balanced Mode | 32305 (-4%) | 28019 (-4%) | 13356 (-11%) |
Battery Power | 21602 (-35%) | 24961 (-15%) | 8881 (-41%) |
Opting for the RTX 4060 configuration of the Blade 14 is expected to impact GPU performance by about 10 to 20 percent. Unfortunately, Razer offers no graphics options beyond the RTX 4070 whereas the competing Asus Zephyrus G14 can go up to the RTX 4090 for even greater performance and twice the VRAM.

Gaming Performance
The vast majority of tested games run slightly faster on our 2024 Blade 14 when compared to our 2023 model as predicted by the 3DMark scores above. Titles that are more GPU-bound like Final Fantasy XV or Cyberpunk 2077 tend to run slightly faster while older and less demanding titles like DOTA 2 Reborn or GTA V don't see any improvements.
Gaming in 4K is possible albeit only satisfactory on titles with DLSS and frame generation to boost frame rates. Cyberpunk 2077 on max native 4K settings, for example, would average just 5.8 FPS versus 41 FPS if both DLSS Auto and Frame Generation are enabled.

System Noise
Fan noise behavior is generally the same as what we observed on the 2023 model but with minor differences due to the aforementioned power profile changes. When running Witcher 3 on Balanced mode, for example, fan noise would settle at 43.2 dB(A). If on Turbo mode, however, fan noise would be noticeably louder in the 46 to 50 dB(A) range. The performance deficit when gaming on Balanced mode is relatively minor by just a few percentage points and so users may want to consider this mode over Turbo mode if fan noise is an issue.
The low 50 dB(A) range puts the Blade 14 in line with the competing Zephyrus G14 and other larger gaming laptops on High Performance mode. If this is too loud, we recommend gaming on Balanced mode and then enabling DLSS if supported to benefit from both increased performance and lower fan noise.

Temperature
Surface temperatures are quite warm even when idling on desktop since the fans tend to be lethargic when no demanding loads are running. The system is therefore warmer than other Ultrabooks on average when browsing the web or playing video, but the quieter fans are a good tradeoff.
Keep in mind that AC adapters from Razer can be noticeably warmer than most other AC adapters in the market as previously mentioned. You'll want to be wary of any sensitive materials or wires that come into contact just to be safe.
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 41.8 °C / 107 F, compared to the average of 40.4 °C / 105 F, ranging from 21.2 to 68.8 °C for the class Gaming.

Power Consumption
The faster year-over-year GPU performance doesn't come "free" so to speak as the 2024 Blade 14 consumes slightly more power than the 2023 model when gaming. Running Witcher 3, for example, would draw 9 to 10 percent more power than before which, perhaps not by coincidence, matches the 9 to 10 percent GPU performance increase that the 2024 model offers.
Idling on desktop would draw anywhere between 20 W and 32 W depending on the brightness and MUX setting. Jumping from minimum to maximum brightness would draw about 5 W more power while enabling dGPU mode would demand another 7 W on top.

Battery Life
At just over 7 hours, battery life is almost an hour longer than on last year's model. Keep in mind that Synapse will automatically change the refresh rate from 240 Hz to 60 Hz when running on batteries to extend the runtime. Otherwise, battery life for our 2024 model would have been much closer to our 2023 results.
Charging from empty to full capacity with the proprietary AC adapter takes between 90 to 120 minutes. Charging via third-party USB-C adapters is supported, but only up to 140 W just like on last year's model even though laptops with 240 W USB-C chargers are already in the market. It's unfortunate that the Blade 14 still relies on a proprietary 240 W charging port when universal 240 W USB-C options exist.

Verdict — Ryzen AI Yet To Be Unlocked
(February 21, 2024 update: We incorrectly linked to the 2024 Asus Zephyrus G14 which can only be configured up to the GeForce RTX 4070 much like on the Blade 14. The 2023 Zephyrus G14 can be configured up to the RTX 4090. The hyperlink has been corrected below.)
As of early 2024, the jump from Ryzen 9 7840HS to Ryzen 9 8945HS is as insignificant as the jump from Wi-Fi 6E to Wi-Fi 7. Most applications at the moment do not yet fully exploit Ryzen AI to make the new processor worthwhile similar to how most users do not yet have Wi-Fi 7 routers to fully exploit the benefits of Wi-Fi 7. Buying the 2024 Blade 14 is therefore more about future-proofing for the vast majority of users should they want to "unlock" the AI and Wi-Fi 7 features of the system at a later date.
The more important difference between the 2023 and 2024 models is instead the slightly faster GPU in the newer model. The 2024 Blade 14 is able to the run the same GeForce RTX 4070 at slightly faster clock rates for 5 to 10 percent faster performance. Core temperature and power consumption are slightly higher as a result, but that's a small price to pay for performance hunters who want to maximize performance-per-volume.
If you have no interest in CPU AI or Wi-Fi 7, then the small GPU performance uptick on the 2024 Blade 14 might win you over. If not, then the visually identical 2023 model offers essentially the same performance for less.
While the paltry upgrades this year are understandable, we would like to see more significant changes in the future such as a switch to universal 240 W USB-C charging, Windows VRR, and support for RTX 4080 or 4090 options. The 2023 Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 continues to be one of the only 14-inch gaming laptops that can outperform the Blade 14 and so it's unfortunate to see the new Razer capping out at the RTX 4070 again.
Price and Availability
Amazon is now shipping the 2024 Razer Blade 14 for $2700 USD as reviewed. The model is also available directly from Razer.
