Schenker VIA 14 Pro (M24) review - Compact AMD subnotebook now with Ryzen 8000 and brighter display

Schenker has updated its compact AMD subnotebook VIA 14 Pro and compared to the old model (we tested the Linux version - Tuxedo Pulse 14), a new processor, a brighter display, and a new coating for the case, which should be less susceptible to dirt.
The base price for the Schenker VIA 14 Pro (M24) is €1,099 with a three-year warranty (without operating system). For this, it comes standard with the AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS, 32 GB RAM, a 500 GB SSD, and the matte 2.8K IPS panel as standard. Our test configuration is configured with the 2 TB version of the Samsung 990 Pro and the Windows pre-installation, which raises the price to €1,275.
In this article, we will focus on the differences to the old model, the brighter display, and, of course, the performance and the effects on emissions. Comprehensive information on the case, features, and input devices can be found in our review of the Tuxedo Pulse 14.

Differences to the predecessor
Basically, nothing has changed on the casing. One point of criticism from us when testing the Tuxedo Pulse 14 was the very sensitive surfaces, on which fingerprints and dirt were quickly visible and cleaning was also not easy. To counteract this problem, a new coating is now being used to reduce fingerprints. The result is also slightly better, but fingerprints are still better and you will have to clean the case often. We would still like to see an additional silver-colored version.
We noticed the green status LED of the webcam on the Tuxedo Pulse 14, which also led to a slight green shimmer in the pictures. The Via 14 Pro, on the other hand, uses a white LED, which is also not noticeable in the pictures. However, the image quality of the 720p webcam remains poor overall.

Display - IPS panel is now brighter
The VIA 14 Pro still relies on a matt IPS panel with a resolution of 2,880 x 1,800 pixels in 16:10 format and a frequency of 120 Hz. It is the same panel ID as the Tuxedo Pulse 14, but the brightness has been increased. Schenker specifies 400 cd/m², but our test device clearly exceeds this specification with an average of 467 cd/m². This also makes it over 100 cd/m² brighter than the Tuxedo Pulse 14 Gen3. The black level is a good 0.29 cd/m², which results in a very good contrast ratio of around 1,600:1.
The subjective image impression of the panel is decent overall and bright areas still appear slightly grainy, and there are also slight halos. PWM is not used and the response times are inconspicuous, but not particularly fast.

* ... smaller is better
We measured the panel with the professional CalMAN software and ex-works the panel has a visible blue cast in conjunction with a color temperature that is too cool, although this has a positive effect on the maximum brightness. However, the display of the colors is already okay. With our calibration (profile is available for free download above), we can significantly improve the display, but the maximum brightness drops to around 425 cd/m². Together with the full sRGB coverage, the notebook is also suitable for editing images/videos.

Test conditions
The VIA 14 Pro (M24) is the first notebook from Schenker without a Command Center; instead, the energy profiles can be switched via the F3 key. The active energy profile is then briefly displayed on the screen. A total of three profiles are available: Quiet, Balanced, and Performance. We have summarized the corresponding TDP values and performance data in the following table. We have carried out the following benchmarks and measurements with the Performance profile.
Energy profile | CPU TDP | CB R23 Multi | Time Spy Graphics | max. Fan volume |
---|---|---|---|---|
Quiet | 25 -> 15 watts | 10,593 points | 2,492 points | 30.6 dB(A) |
Balanced | 45 -> 35 watts | 15,250 points | 2,877 points | 36.2 dB(A) |
Power | 54 watts | 16,330 points | 2,915 points | 43.6 dB(A) |
Processor - Ryzen 7 8845HS
The processor was changed from the AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS to the Ryzen 7 8845HS, which still uses 8 Zen4 cores (16 threads) with a maximum clock speed of 5.1 GHz. Unsurprisingly, the performance is therefore also comparable and all comparison devices are very close together overall. The performance is very good in both the multi-core and single-core tests and there are no bottlenecks here, even with demanding tasks. In battery mode, the maximum consumption is limited to 35 watts, which is why the multi-core performance is 12% lower.

Mass storage
The VIA 14 Pro offers two fast PCIe 4.0 slots for M.2 2280 SSDs. A 500 GB SSD is installed in the basic configuration, but our test device contains the 2 TB version of the Samsung 990 Pro (surcharge 138 euros). The 990 Pro achieves high transfer rates and the performance remains completely stable even under prolonged load. After the initial start-up, the user has 1.76 TB at their disposal. Further SSD benchmarks can be found here.

Graphics card
The Ryzen 8000 series still relies on the familiar Radeon 780M, which benefits from the dual-channel configuration of the RAM. The iGPU is very suitable for everyday use and gaming is also possible, although you often have to be satisfied with low details in current titles. In the synthetic benchmarks, the new Intel Arc Graphics iGPU (with 8 Xe cores) can slightly outperform the 780M, but gaming performance is on par.
The graphics performance remains completely stable even under prolonged load, and our Cyberpunk 2077 test (30 minutes) also shows no loss of performance. In battery mode, however, the GPU performance is minimally reduced (~11%). Further GPU benchmarks are available in our technology section.

Emissions & Energy
Noise emissions
The cooling of the VIA 14 Pro uses two fans and the volume depends largely on the selected energy profile. In idle mode and simple tasks, the device remains mostly silent even in performance mode. Under higher load, however, the two fans are clearly noticeable and a maximum of 43.6 dB(A) is not particularly quiet. The results in the other energy profiles are listed in the following table. The fans remain deactivated for a very long time, especially in the Quiet profile. There were no other electronic noises in our test device.

Temperature
The casing of the VIA 14 Pro barely heats up in idle mode and during light tasks, but this changes under load. On the underside, we measured almost 50 °C in the middle area both during gaming and in the stress test, which is why you should not place the device on your thighs in such a scenario. The keyboard area also gets noticeably warm at up to 43 °C, but there are no limitations here. In the stress test, the processor operates at a constant 54 watts.
On the negative side, we noticed the 100-watt power supply, which differs slightly from the Tuxedo Pulse 14 Gen3 power supply. Although the laptop's total consumption during the stress test is around 92 watts and therefore not yet at the power supply's limit, temperatures of just under 60 °C are definitely too high.
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 44.6 °C / 112 F, compared to the average of 35.9 °C / 97 F, ranging from 21.4 to 59 °C for the class Subnotebook.
(-) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 50.9 °C / 124 F, compared to the average of 39.3 °C / 103 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 25.9 °C / 79 F, compared to the device average of 30.8 °C / 87 F.
(-) 3: The average temperature for the upper side is 38.1 °C / 101 F, compared to the average of 30.8 °C / 87 F for the class Subnotebook.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are reaching skin temperature as a maximum (33.8 °C / 92.8 F) and are therefore not hot.
(-) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 28.2 °C / 82.8 F (-5.6 °C / -10 F).

Power consumption
The higher panel brightness is not negatively noticeable compared to the Tuxedo Pulse 14 and the maximum consumption of 94 watts is also slightly lower. All in all, there are no surprises here and the supplied 100 watt power supply is sufficiently dimensioned. However, the consumption when switched off has still not improved and 0.8 watts is a little high.

Battery life
The battery runtimes in conjunction with the 60 Wh battery are not bad in themselves, but the VIA 14 Pro is beaten by the competition. The frequency only has a minimal influence on the battery runtimes, which can also be seen in the following table. The brightness of 150 cd/m² for the WLAN and video test corresponds to 32% of the maximum brightness on the test device.
Frequency | WLAN test 150 cd/m² | WLAN test maximum brightness |

Verdict - Schenker VIA 14 Pro now with a brighter display
With the VIA 14 Pro, Schenker has a fast and compact 14-inch device on offer, which, in addition to the powerful Ryzen processor and the standard RAM configuration of 32 GB, is characterized above all by the good expansion options (2x M.2-2280). There is also a sufficient number of ports available, even if you have to do without modern standards such as USB 4.0. However, the microSD card reader is very slow and the weak 720p webcam is no longer up to date. Despite the new surface, fingerprints are still a problem.
The new Ryzen processor offers plenty of performance and the fast Radeon 780M GPU, but there is no advantage over the old Ryzen 7 7840HS in the predecessor model. The big upgrade for the 2024 model year is the IPS screen, which is now significantly brighter. The manufacturer's specification increases from 300 to 400 cd/m², with our test device even reaching an average of just under 470 cd/m². After calibration, the picture quality is also very good.
The Schenker VIA Pro 14 is a fast 14-inch notebook and now offers a brighter IPS screen, which is very suitable for productive activities. The price-performance ratio is decent, but there are some areas where you have to make sacrifices (no USB 4.0, weak webcam, slow card reader).
Compared to the competition, the VIA 14 Pro scores particularly well with its 32 GB RAM and two SSD slots, which is a rarity for 14-inch models. However, some of the competition offers OLED panels and also has advantages in terms of battery life. Tuxedo now also offers the identical Pulse 14 Gen4 with Linux from €1,230.
