Tuxedo Pulse 14 Gen3 review - The Linux Ultrabook with AMD Zen4 and a 120-Hz display
Tuxedo has expanded its portfolio of compact 14-inch laptops with its new Pulse 14 Gen3 which relies on a current Zen4 processor from AMD. The Ryzen 7 7840HS, including its fast Radeon 780M iGPU, is installed as standard—as well as 32 GB LPDDR5-6400 RAM and a high-res 3K IPS display with a 120-Hz refresh rate. With a 500-GB SSD from Samsung, its base price is around US$1,320 and our test configuration featuring the 2-TB version of the Samsung 980 Pro costs about US$1,500. Price-wise, the new Pulse 14 Gen3 lies just below the well-known InfinityBook Pro 14 Gen8 (Linux version of the Schenker Vision 14 M23) with a Core i7-13700H and an optional GeForce RTX 3050 6 GB (prices start from US$1,700). In addition to the Linux-based Tuxedo OS, the Pulse 14 Gen3 can also be configured with Windows (virtual machine or dual boot).
You can also get an identically-built Windows version from Schenker called the Via 14 Pro which has a slightly lower MRSP of US$1,200 (with its warranty reduced to 2 years, you can even get it for US$1,110).

Case - The Pulse 14 with an aluminum/plastic case
At first glance, the new Pulse 14 Gen3's case closely resembles that of the InfinityBook or the Vision 14 but upon closer inspection, you can notice a few differences. While the more expensive InfinityBook relies on a magnesium alloy and only weighs just over 1.3 kg (even with its 99-Wh battery), the Pulse 14 Gen3's case is made from aluminum (display cover & bottom case part) and plastic (top case part & display frame). In terms of quality, the laptop makes quite a good impression, however, its aluminum surfaces, in particular, are quite sensitive to collecting fingerprint marks—which also aren't the easiest to remove. There unfortunately isn't a silver version of the device. The black version of the Vision 14 was a little easier to keep clean. The new Pulse 14 can optionally be had without the manufacturer's logo on the lid or alternatively, you can even get it sent out with a custom logo (even in color).
The base unit's stability is great and we only managed to press in the middle keyboard area when using quite a bit of pressure. The screen is slightly more flexible but we couldn't elicit any image errors from it. Its maximum opening angle is 180 degrees and in general, the hinges are set well, but the display does wobble a bit after setting it to a different angle. Thankfully, this problem isn't as pronounced as it is on the InfinityBook/Vision 14.
The new Pulse 14 is one of the most compact devices within the comparison field and it weighs 1.39 kg. This makes it slightly heavier than the old InfinityBook. Its 100-watt power supply weighs 265 grams.
Connectivity - Tuxedo has done without USB 4.0
Despite its compact size, the Pulse 14 Gen3 isn't lacking connectivity options, as aside from a total of 4x USB (2x USB-C & 2x USB-A), it also features a full HDMI output as well as a microSD card reader. This means you likely won't need to carry an adapter with you in everyday use. On the other hand, it doesn't have a modern USB-4.0 port.
SD card reader
There is a microSD card reader (spring mechanism) on the right side of the device—which is, unfortunately, only connected via USB 2.0. In combination with our reference card (Angelbird AV Pro V60), we measured slow transfer rates of around 20 MB/s.

Communication
Our test device houses a WLAN module from MediaTek (MT9721K) which may support modern Wi-Fi 6E networks (6 GHz), however, it only runs at 80 MHz. This means its maximum transfer rate is limited to 1,200 MBit/s and this is also the reason why our test results were comparatively poor. You can optionally go for the AX210 card from Intel instead. Even so, in everyday use, its WLAN performance is definitely fast and stable enough.

Webcam
The laptop's webcam only uses a 720p sensor and even in good lighting conditions, its results weren't particularly good. Adding to this was the fact that the green status LED next to the webcam always appeared slightly visible in the photos, as it is extremely bright. It additionally features an IR camera which can be used for facial recognition using Windows Hello.
Maintenance
The bottom cover is secured by normal Phillips screws and can be removed easily. Inside, you can see both of the fans as well as the two slots for M.2-2280 SSDs. In addition to this, the WLAN module and battery can be swapped out. However, the RAM is soldered on.
Warranty
The Pulse 14 Gen3 comes delivered with a two-year warranty as standard. For a surcharge, you can extend this period to up to 5 years.
Input devices - Comfortable and illuminated
The Pulse 14's black keyboard is strongly reminiscent of the Vision 14, offering a very comfortable feel with precise keystrokes. Aside from its large space bar, the keyboard is also nice and quiet. Although, its layout isn't ideal, as the power button on the top right is integrated into the keyboard, meaning it's easy to confuse it with the "delete" key. It features white backlighting with two brightness settings, however, they aren't set automatically via a sensor.
The clickpad (12.5 x 6.5 cm) is nice and smooth and works well, but its clicking noises are a little too loud. We would therefore recommend only tapping the pad for inputs. In contrast to the keyboard, the clickpad's quality isn't as good as that of the InfinityBook (and it is smaller).
Display - 3K IPS with a 120-Hz refresh rate
In terms of its specs, the matte 3K IPS display is clearly reminiscent of the old InfinityBook or Vision 14, but now with a higher frequency of 120 Hz instead of 90 Hz. The rest of its specs (2,880 x 1,800 pixel resolution, 16:10 aspect ratio) are identical. One change we did notice is that brighter areas tend to look a little grainy. Furthermore, we noted some subtle halos along the bottom display edge. It doesn't feature a brightness sensor.
Tuxedo has stated a brightness of at least 300 cd/m² and in practice, our test device achieved an average of about 340 cd/m². Its black value is a very low 0.16 cd/m², leading to an excellent contrast ratio of more than 2,000:1. PWM isn't used and its reaction speeds may not be the fastest, but they aren't anything out of the ordinary.

* ... smaller is better
We analyzed the panel using the professional CalMAN software (X-Rite i1 Pro 2) and straight out of the box, its depiction is very good. There may be a slight color green/blue tint when it comes to gray tones, however, you won't likely notice this in everyday use. The colors remain below the all-important limit of 3 and you don't necessarily have to calibrate the screen. Even so, we tried it (our profile can be downloaded for free further above), and gray tones in particular showed improved depiction. In combination with its almost full sRGB coverage, the Pulse 14 is well suited for editing pictures/video.

Outside, the matte IPS panel does really well—you should just avoid direct sunlight. Its viewing-angle stability is good and only angles from diagonally above occasionally lead to a visible loss of contrast, however, this shouldn't have too big an impact in everyday use.
Performance - AMD Zen4 and 32 GB RAM
The Pulse 14 is only available with the AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS along with its integrated Radeon 780M graphics card, as well as 32 GB LPDDR5-6400 RAM. The scope of delivery includes all drivers for Windows, even if you haven't ordered a Windows installation along with it.
Testing conditions
Tuxedo offers different performance profiles in its preinstalled Control Center and by default, the profile Tuxedo Defaults is activated. In order to better compare the laptop with the other Windows devices in our database, we performed the following benchmarks and measurements using the additionally installed Windows version (11 Home). We didn't note a difference between both operating systems when it came to performance, power consumption or fan performance.
Processor - Ryzen 7 7840HS
The Ryzen 7 7840HS features 8 fast Zen4 cores (16 threads) which clock at a maximum of 5.1 GHz. Within the Pulse 14, the processor reached 65 watts for a short space of time and then balanced out at 45 watts after a few short seconds. This makes its multi-core performance excellent and about on the same level as the new Core Ultra 7 155H inside the Acer Swift Go 14, however, its performance also remains almost completely stable in the Pulse 14—even under permanent load. In addition, its single-core performance is comparable to the new Meteor Lake Core Ultra 7 155H that offers slightly less performance than the old Raptor-Lake chips.
In battery use, the processor has access to a maximum of 28 watts, which is why its multi-core performance is 18 % worse when you don't have access to an outlet. Further CPU benchmarks can be found here.

System performance
Subjectively, the Pulse 14 performs exceedingly well and it sure is a fast-reacting laptop. Its benchmark results were also excellent and we didn't have any issues with either of the operating systems during our test.

Storage devices
The Pulse 14 has two fast PCIe-4.0-x4 slots for single-sided SSDs. The base model is fitted with a 500-GB Samsung 980, although, our test device features the 2-TB version of the Samsung 980 Pro (surcharge of around US$170). Currently, it can accommodate 2 SSDs with a maximum of 4 TB each. The 980 Pro's performance is great and even under permanent load, it remains completely stable—which isn't always a given. Further SSD benchmarks can be found here.

Graphics card
There isn't a dedicated graphics card offered within the Pulse 14—instead, it uses the processor's integrated Radeon-780M-GPU for graphics calculations. It, of course, profits from the RAM's dual-channel configuration. The iGPU's performance is very good, however, the new Arc iGPU (8 cores) from Intel's new Meteor-Lake CPUs at least had a small advantage in the synthetic benchmarks. Still, not much of this remained in the gaming tests, as the Radeon 780M took the lead. Many games can be played at 1080p and with high details—only when running very demanding games do you have to lower your expectations a little. Of course, a dGPU is still a more viable option if you are looking to play games frequently.
Under permanent load, its performance remained completely stable—in the synthetic 3DMark stress test as well as in our Witcher 3 long-term test. In battery mode, the pure GPU performance is reduced by about 8 %. Further GPU benchmarks can be found here.

Emissions - The Pulse 14 with two fans
Noise emissions
The Pulse 14 is fitted with two fans and in total, this is a very quiet laptop indeed. Even using the mode best performance, the fans often remain completely deactivated in idle mode as well as during less demanding tasks. If anything, you'll only notice a very subtle whirring (~25 dB(A)) if it is really quiet around you. We measured a maximum of 37 dB(A) when using the highest performance mode, which is pretty good considering how well it performs and it shows a clear advantage over the Vision 14, even without a dedicated graphics card. We didn't note any additional electronic noises coming from our test device.

Temperature
In idle mode and during very simple tasks, the case practically doesn't heat up at all and even when running games or the stress test, we noted a maximum of 45 °C in the middle of the bottom case part. This is completely unproblematic and you can confidently place the laptop onto your thighs during use. The keyboard heats up to a maximum of around 40 °C and although you do notice this when typing, it definitely won't get in your way. During the stress test, the processor consumed 65 watts for a short burst of time, then 45 watts for the rest of the test.
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 41.5 °C / 107 F, compared to the average of 35.9 °C / 97 F, ranging from 21.4 to 59 °C for the class Subnotebook.
(-) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 45.7 °C / 114 F, compared to the average of 39.4 °C / 103 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 24.1 °C / 75 F, compared to the device average of 30.7 °C / 87 F.
(±) Playing The Witcher 3, the average temperature for the upper side is 34.6 °C / 94 F, compared to the device average of 30.7 °C / 87 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 29.8 °C / 85.6 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(±) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 28.3 °C / 82.9 F (-1.5 °C / -2.7 F).

Speakers
Both of the speakers only emit an average sound and aren't very powerful. For conferences or background music, they will likely be good enough but even so, we would recommend connecting headphones or external speakers for a better sound experience.

Power consumption
The Pulse 14 with its high-res 120-Hz display isn't the most efficient laptop, using up to 9.7 watts in idle mode. This is a lot more than its competitors, although they are brighter at times. Under maximum load, we measured a maximum of 101 watts for a few seconds which later balanced out at 75 watts. As a result, the 100-watt power supply is sufficient. On the other hand, its consumption in standby mode or while turned off is almost 1 watt, which is a bit high.

Runtimes
The laptop's battery has a 60-Wh capacity, making it considerably worse off compared to the InfinityBook or the Vision 14 with the large 99-Wh battery. Even so, its runtimes are still very good and in our test using an adapted brightness of 150 cd/m² (46 % of our test device's maximum brightness), the device lasted for 10:20 hours during the WLAN test at 60 Hz, and at 120 Hz it lasted for 8:49 hours. At full brightness, the refresh rate doesn't make a difference anymore, as both WLAN tests now lasted for 6:36 hours. In our video test, we noted about 10-hour runtimes.
One complete charge takes about 108 minutes with the device switched on, whereby 80 % of its capacity is filled after about an hour. During the test, a new BIOS update was released, letting you set the lower and upper charging thresholds for the battery.

Verdict - The Pulse 14 Gen3 impresses with its good performance and display
The new Pulse 14 from Tuxedo (as well as the new Via 14 Pro from Schenker) is an interesting 14-inch subnotebook with a fast AMD Zen4 processor. Its total performance is better than the more expensive InfinityBook or the Vision 14 with the Core i7-13700H—especially when it comes to its integrated graphics card. Furthermore, it features 32 GB RAM as standard, meaning it can set itself apart from a whole load of competitors but at the same time, its RAM is soldered on and cannot be expanded.
Its matte 3K IPS display continues to impress with its good subjective picture quality without PWM. In addition, it depicts colors very accurately and its refresh rate has been raised to 120 Hz. Its cooling unit featuring two fans handles the AMD processor well and in total, the Pulse 14 is a lot quieter than the iGPU version of the Vision 14 which we previously tested. Its great keyboard has been adopted without any changes having been made.
The new Tuxedo Pulse 14 Gen3 is a powerful 14-inch subnotebook with a modern AMD Zen4 processor, 32 GB RAM and a high-res 120-Hz IPS display. Unfortunately, a few areas (webcam, card reader, no USB 4.0) give away where cuts have been made in order to keep the device's price as low as possible.
A few features give away the laptop's low price and a few things in particular show where cuts have been made, including its webcam (including the annoying green tint cast by the status LED), microSD card reader, average speakers and missing USB-4.0 support. You will have to decide for yourself how important these things are to you. If you can live with these disadvantages, then you'll still receive a super fast subnotebook with a good IPS display and 32 GB RAM. Moreover, the device's SSD capacity can be easily (and cheaply) expanded thanks to its second PCIe-4.0 slot. Despite the previously mentioned disadvantages, the new Pulse 14 Gen3's advantages are clearly in the majority, leading to it securing a very good rating of 89 %. The Pulse 14 Gen3's prices start from US$1,300 but if you only want to use Windows, then you can get the identically-built Schenker Via 14 Pro for just over US$1,110.
Price and availability
The new Pulse 14 Gen3 can be purchased directly from Tuxedo Computers, with prices starting from around US$1,300. The identically-built Windows version, the Schenker Via 14 Pro, can be purchased from Bestware—prices start from US$1,110.
