Xiaomi RedmiBook Pro 14 2024 laptop review - The affordable subnotebook with lots of stamina

We recently tested the 16-inch version of the RedmiBook Pro and now, it's time to take a look at the smaller 14-inch variant. Its overall concept is the same, as its aluminum case houses the latest Meteor Lake CPUs from Intel and up to 32 GB RAM. The laptop features a matte IPS display with a brightness of 400 nits, a refresh rate of 120 Hz and full sRGB coverage.
Our test device is the high-end variant fitted with the Core Ultra 7 155H, 32 GB RAM and a 1-TB SSD, which you can import for around US$950. Xiaomi itself doesn't officially sell its laptops in the United States.

Case & connectivity
The RedmiBook Pro 14 uses a silver aluminum case which has a subtle green tint. It looks super sleek and in general, its design featuring rounded edges looks great—we also like that its bezels aren't the widest. We didn't note any issues surrounding its stability or build quality. Although the display lid is a little more flexible than the base unit and you can elicit slight image errors from it when using a lot of pressure, this shouldn't be a problem during everyday use. Its hinges have been set well and the screen doesn't wobble much, while still allowing you to easily open it to a maximum of 180 degrees using one hand.
The laptop's ports include all the most important standards including Thunderbolt 4, HDMI and USB-A. You'll just have to do without a microSD card reader. The WLAN module (Intel AX211) supports the Wi-Fi 6E standard and achieves good transfer rates. The device's 1080p webcam does its job, but it doesn't take particularly attractive photos. Even so, it supports all the latest Studio Effects from Windows.

Maintenance
Input devices - Good keyboard
As with the larger RedmiBook Pro 16, the smaller model features just as nice a back-lit keyboard. Its keys offer enough lift in combination with a precise stroke, meaning even longer texts will feel comfortable to type. The clickpad (12.5 x 8.3 cm) is nice and smooth and we had no issues using it during our test. The bottom part of the pad can be pressed down, but this is met with somewhat loud clicking noises.
Display - 120-Hz 2.8K IPS
The RedmiBook Pro 14 is equipped with a 16:10 14-inch panel with a matte surface, whereby light content never looks grainy. Thanks to its resolution of 2,880 x 1,800, its picture is nice and sharp and movements benefit from its increased refresh rate (120 Hz). Moreover, its response times are fine, it doesn't use PWM and we noted no bigger issues with backlight bleeding.
The manufacturer indicates a brightness of 400 cd/m², which our average measurements of ~408 cd/m² confirmed. At the same time, its black value of 0.3 cd/m² is decent for an IPS panel, leading to an overall good contrast ratio of around 1,400:1.

* ... smaller is better
Straight out of the box, the laptop's display is already well-calibrated. Our analysis using the professional CalMAN software (X-Rite i1 Pro2) showed a minimal blue cast but in general, all values came below the important deviation of 3—the same can be said for colors. Using our own calibration (profile can be downloaded for free further above), we were able to optimize its depiction ever so slightly, but it isn't totally necessary to do so. Thanks to its complete sRGB coverage, the panel is well-suited for editing photos/videos.

Performance - Intel Meteor Lake and 32 GB RAM
Testing conditions
The RedmiBook Pro 14 offers no additional energy profiles, the following measurements and benchmarks were carried out using the Windows performance mode maximum performance.
Processor - Core Ultra 7 155H
The Intel Core Ultra 7 155H from the latest Meteor Lake generation briefly consumes up to 100 watts in the RedmiBook Pro 14, with its values finally stabilizing at 45 watts under prolonged load. These are high values that ensured correspondingly good benchmark results. However, it was not quite enough to live up to the AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS inside the IdeaPad Pro 5 14 (60/50 watts). In our Cinebench loop, its performance dropped by around 13 % after a few runs. In battery mode, the CPU's power consumption drops to 65/35 watts, which is why its multi-core performance was slightly lower during our test (-8 %). Further CPU benchmarks are available in our tech section.

DPC latencies
In our standardized latency test (surfing the web, 4K YouTube playback, CPU load), the test device with the current BIOS version didn't show any major limitations when using real-time audio applications. One driver did fail somewhat, but the important "interrupt-to-process-latency" value was low.

Storage device
A 1-TB SSD (YMTC PC300) is installed into our test device, but this SSD is split into two partitions by default. This is unnecessary and there is just 150 GB free on the system drive (the remaining 757 GB on drive D). If you are not careful when downloading and installing programs, you may be faced with capacity issues quickly. The compact PCIe 4.0 SSD's (M.2 2242) performance is perfectly adequate but it doesn't remain completely stable under prolonged load. Further SSD benchmarks are listed here.

Graphics card - Intel Arc Graphics
The processor's integrated GPU—an Arc Graphics with 8 Xe cores—is responsible for graphics calculations. This makes it the fastest iGPU that Intel currently offers and, in conjunction with the Core Ultra 7 155H, its maximum core clock rate is 2,250 MHz. The iGPU also benefits from the fast LPDDR5x-7467 RAM and the RedmiBook Pro 14 outperformed all its competitors in the GPU benchmarks.
Its gaming performance is similarly good, however, its lead over the AMD Radeon 780M from the synthetic tests couldn't be maintained. Even so, the two GPUs were practically on par during our gaming tests. Many older or less demanding games can be run smoothly in 1080p with high details settings, but when playing current games such as Baldur's Gate 3 or Cyberpunk 2077, you'll have to make do with low details or use upscaling technologies such as XeSS. The laptop's gaming performance remains stable under prolonged load and in battery mode. Further GPU benchmarks are available here.

Emissions & power
Noise emissions
The RedmiBook Pro 14 has two fans and during everyday use, the device often remains very quiet. When completing less demanding tasks, the fans usually stay deactivated or give out a barely audible whirring noise. If you place the laptop under more load, they slowly start to spin faster, reaching emissions of 35 dB(A), before hitting a loud ~44 dB(A) when playing games or as we noted in the stress test. After ending the high-load phase, its fans soon begin to spin slower again. We didn't note any additional electronic noises on our test device.

Temperature
In idle mode, the aluminium case stays nice and cool but under load, the back part of the bottom heats up in particular, reaching temperatures of almost 50 °C. In this scenario, you shouldn't place the laptop on your thighs but during normal everyday use, you likely won't face any limitations. During the stress test, the processor's consumption balanced out at 45 watts after a few minutes and it remained stable at this level.
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 43.7 °C / 111 F, compared to the average of 35.9 °C / 97 F, ranging from 21.4 to 59 °C for the class Subnotebook.

Power consumption
There were no surprises in its consumption measurements, as we noted less than 10 watts in idle mode at full brightness and 120 Hz. Under load, the laptop's high power limits became noticeable, as the test device briefly reached the limit of the supplied 100-watt power supply unit during the stress test—at just under 102 watts. After around 20 seconds, however, its consumption stabilized at 90 watts and finally at around 75 watts, so in general, the power supply is powerful enough.

Runtimes
Thanks to its 80 Wh battery, our test device achieved excellent runtimes and left the direct competition in the dust. During the WLAN test at 150 cd/m² (corresponds to 67 % of our test device's maximum brightness ), it lasted for 14:48 hours at 60 Hz and 12:18 hours at 120 Hz. At full brightness, we still recorded 11:42 hours (60 Hz) and 09:42 hours (120 Hz). In the video test at 150 cd/m², we noted almost 21 hours. Only under load did it only last 1:41 hours. One full charge with the device switched on takes 94 minutes; 80 % of its capacity is available again after 49 minutes.

Verdict - The RedmiBook Pro 14 is good value for money
The Xiaomi RedmiBook Pro 14 left a good impression on us during our test as for around US$950, buyers receive a fast and high-quality 14-inch laptop that doesn't leave you having to make any compromises—in part thanks to its good connectivity options. All the important connections (including Thunderbolt 4) are on board and the Intel Core Ultra 7 155H offers lots of performance. Unfortunately, the latter comes at the cost of the laptop's emissions. In this aspect, lower power limits would've made more sense and AMD still takes the lead in all things efficiency.
A further big advantage is the laptop's excellent battery life which the competition simply cannot keep up with. Its IPS panel isn't quite as good as the one inside the larger 16-inch model, however, thanks to its matte surface, high frequency and accurate depiction, you can't really go wrong. Although OLED panels depict content more vividly, you have to take into account PWM flickering and oftentimes reflective surfaces.
A metal case, lots of ports, a decent display, great performance, a good keyboard and very long runtimes—the Xiaomi RedmiBook Pro 14 has a lot of good features and in particular due to its low price, we don't have much to criticize.
Aside from its loud fans and high temperatures under load, the laptop's availability is one large disadvantage, as you will have to purchase it as an import device. However, if this isn't a big issue for you, then you can look forward to using a good 14-inch laptop that's great value for money.
