Lenovo ThinkPad X1 2in1 G9 review - The high-end business convertible with 120-Hz OLED and without TrackPoint buttons

Standstill on the executive floor?

Lenovo has dropped the name Yoga from its flagship convertible for business customers, now calling it the ThinkPad X1 2in1. AI marketing aside, its new Meteor Lake processor offers little performance and its high-resolution OLED touchscreen isn't entirely good. Lenovo also offers an optional haptic touchpad without TrackPoint buttons.

For years, the ThinkPad X1 Yoga has been Lenovo's flagship convertible within the ThinkPad series, but apparently the name Yoga is now being moved completely into the area of private customers, with the 9th-generation of the convertible now simply being called the ThinkPad X1 2in1 G9. Its case has been completely revamped for this new model and it now makes use of Intel's latest Meteor Lake mobile processors—however, only the weaker U-series models.

Our test sample bears the name ThinkPad X1 2in1 G9 21KE004AGE with the Core Ultra 7 165H including its iGPU, 32 GB RAM, a 1-TB SSD as well as the new OLED touchscreen with a resolution of 2,880 x 1,800 pixels and a 120-Hz refresh rate. This model currently costs US$3,948. The top model featuring 64 GB RAM and a 2-TB SSD costs US$4,708 and the laptop's introductory price starts from US$3,456 (Core Ultra 5, 16 GB RAM, 512-GB SSD, Full HD IPS display).

Case - Now without space for the stylus

The pen can now be attached to the case magnetically.
The pen can now be attached to the case magnetically.

Despite Lenovo having given its new X1 2in1 G9 a completely new case, its general design language has remained the same. This means the gray convertible continues to set itself apart from the black ThinkPad models, while its surfaces are also a lot less susceptible to collecting fingerprint marks. However, the likely biggest change has to do with its input pen, which is now much bigger than before. In turn, it now isn't possible to store the pen inside the laptop's case. Instead, you can only attach it magnetically to both sides of the device. This isn't a full replacement, as the pen will easily detach from the case, especially when you are transporting the laptop inside your bag.

We have nothing negative to say about the X1 convertible's quality, as its aluminum case (and magnesium aluminum alloy on the bottom of the base unit) is very stable and we couldn't dent it or elicit any creaking noises from it. The same can be said for the lid and we like the hinges in particular, as they hold the screen in place securely and almost entirely prevent it from rocking when you adjust its angle.

Of course, you can also completely flip over the display, which makes the X1 2in1's various operating modes possible. When using it in tent or presentation mode, however, the camera hump (which is now used on almost all Lenovo laptops) is particularly noticeable. This is because in this case, the device actually sits on the camera hump, which looks peculiar. Thankfully, there are no functional limitations when doing so.

The ThinkPad X1 2in1 G9 occupies the largest footprint amongst the comparison devices, however, the differences are minimal. In turn, it is the thinnest model, with a thickness of only 15.5 mm. It weighs 1.35 kg and the supplied 65-watt power supply adds another 329 grams onto the scales.

Connectivity - The X1 2in1 with Thunderbolt and HDMI

The ThinkPad X1 2in1 has no flaws when it comes to its connectivity options—aside from modern Thunderbolt 4 ports, it also features regular USB-A ports as well as a full-featured HDMI output. On the flip side, Lenovo hasn't installed an SD card reader. Both of the USB-C connections on the left side have moved forward a little, which may make it harder to access the USB-A port at the back. Apart from this, there are no layout issues.

Communication

The new X1 2in1 can already be configured with a modern Wi-Fi 7 module, however, our test configuration only features the well-known AX211 card from Intel, which supports Wi-Fi 6E (6 GHz) and Bluetooth 5.3. In our test using a reference router from Asus, its transfer rates were high and stable—in addition, we noted no connection problems during the duration of our test.

Our test device is WWAN-ready and the required antenna for a cellular module, as well as a nano SIM card slot, are already installed. Moreover, the new X1 2in1 is the one of the first devices in years which can be ordered WWAN-ready via the manufacturer's configurator—usually, this was only reserved for selected Campus models.

Webcam

You can optionally get the Lenovo laptop with an 8 MP camera with a mechanical cover—this is also included in our model. Compared to the regular 1080p models, image sharpness in particular benefits from the higher resolution. Together with the Meteor Lake processor, studio effects (soft focus, head tracking, etc.) are supported as part of the device's operating system. An IR camera for facial recognition via Windows Hello is also available.

Input devices - A haptic touchpad without TrackPoint buttons

The ThinkPad X1 2in1 G9's keyboard continues to have a key lift of 1.5 mm and feels generally comfortable to type on, although its quality can no longer compete with the old models' key lift—which we always notice compared to our ThinkPad X1 Carbon from 2018. In addition, the ThinkPad no longer has an advantage over its competitors here. A button for the fingerprint scanner is new on its keyboard—but you'll have to go without the new Copilot key. It's also annoying that the two-level keyboard backlighting can't be activated automatically.

The optional haptic touchpad doesn't feature any dedicated TrackPoint buttons.
The optional haptic touchpad doesn't feature any dedicated TrackPoint buttons.

On the current ThinkPad X1 2in1, Lenovo lets customers choose whether they want a classic clickpad with three dedicated buttons for the TrackPoint, or a haptic touchpad without any dedicated buttons. The latter is installed in our test device and only the middle TrackPoint button can be felt with light dots. Basically, the pad has no moving parts and feedback is simulated by vibration motors. This has the advantage that its feedback is the same at all points, and its operation worked very well in our test. However, those who mainly use the TrackPoint should probably not go for the haptic pad, as the pad is no substitute for the dedicated keys and it isn't the best to operate. Inputs are also possible using the supplied active Lenovo Slim Pen and we noted no problems in practice.

Display - OLED with a raster effect

Sub-pixel array
Sub-pixel array

Our test device uses the optional OLED touchscreen with a resolution of 2,880 x 1,800 pixels. The panel is made by Samsung and subjectively, its picture quality is great—although you can see a slight raster effect when depicting light content. Its brightness values of around 400 cd/m² suggest the current OLED generation from Samsung, however, despite their touchscreens, the latest Galaxy Book Pro models don't show this raster effect. Colors look super vivid and the screen's response times are very fast. In addition, its higher refresh rate of 120 Hz helps with depicting movement. Neither brightness nor color temperature can be adapted automatically.

Its average brightness is 411 cd/m² and together with its low black value, it features an extremely high contrast ratio. In HDR mode, its maximum brightness when depicting small image excerpts is 630 cd/m² and when showing an almost completely white screen, we noted 510 cd/m². We measured 240-Hz PWM flickering at brightness levels of 99 % and below.

We analyzed the panel using the professional CalMAN software (X-Rite i1 Pro2) and its settings straight out of the box were already decent. We noted no color tint and its color deviations were okay, too. We were able to improve depiction ever so slightly using our own calibration, but quite a few colors were still above the important deviation of 3. Lenovo also doesn't offer a profile for the sRGB color space. Although P3 is covered, the panel isn't ideal for editing photos.

Display Response Times

Display response times show how fast the screen is able to change from one color to the next. Slow response times can lead to afterimages and can cause moving objects to appear blurry (ghosting). Gamers of fast-paced 3D titles should pay special attention to fast response times.
       Response Time Black to White
0.69 ms ... rise ↗ and fall ↘ combined↗ 0.35 ms rise

The screen shows very fast response rates in our tests and should be very well suited for fast-paced gaming.
In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.1 (minimum) to 240 (maximum) ms. » 1 % of all devices are better.
This means that the measured response time is better than the average of all tested devices (20.7 ms).

This means that the measured response time is better than the average of all tested devices (32.4 ms).

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.
Screen flickering / PWM detected 240 Hz ≤ 99 % brightness setting

The display backlight flickers at 240 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 99 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting.

The frequency of 240 Hz is relatively low, so sensitive users will likely notice flickering and experience eyestrain at the stated brightness setting and below.

In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 8445 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 343500) Hz was measured.

Outside, the device of course profits from its very high contrast, however, the screen's strongly reflective surface results in reflections in most cases. The OLED panel's viewing angle stability is very good.

Performance - Meteor Lake and up to 64 GB RAM

Lenovo only offers the new ThinkPad X1 2in1 G9 with the new U-series mobile processors from Intel's Meteor Lake generation, whereby you can choose between the Core Ultra 5 and the Core Ultra 7 (and the corresponding vPro versions). The Core Ultra 5 models and the Core Ultra 7 155U can be had with 16 or 32 GB, and the Core Ultra 7 165U can be configured with 16, 32 or 64 GB.

Testing conditions

There are no additional energy profiles from Lenovo on the ThinkPad models—instead, they are automatically linked to the Windows settings. The following tests and benchmarks were carried out using maximum performance mode.

Processor - Core Ultra 7 165H

The Core Ultra 7 165U belongs to the latest Meteor Lake generation from Intel and in comparison to the Core Ultra 7 155U, it has a slightly higher maximum clock rate of up to 4.9 GHz as well as vPro support. The U-series chips only offer two fast performance cores and at the end of the day, its multi-core performance hasn't changed compared to the old Core i7-1355U and in total, its performance is rather low despite its relatively high TDP of 40/30 watts. A current AMD processor with these values would be considerably faster and an H processor from Intel could also have been used at these TDP values. in battery mode, the processor can consume a maximum of 35 watts, which is why its multi-core performance is about 8 % lower in this scenario. Further CPU benchmarks can be found in our tech section.

GPU-Z Intel Graphics
GPU-Z Intel Graphics

Within the ThinkPad X1 2in1, graphics calculations are taken care of by the processor's iGPU and the new U-series chips of the Meteor Lake generation do not use the fast Arc Graphics with 8 Xe cores—which is available in conjunction with the Core Ultra 7 155H, for example—but only a slower variant with 4 Xe cores. Its performance therefore lags significantly behind devices with the Core Ultra 7 155H and is only slightly faster than the old Iris Xe Graphics from previous years.

Of course, this also has an impact on the device's gaming performance if you intend on winding down after work with some games. Here too, the new X1 2in1 only came just ahead of the old model and you will be limited to older or less demanding games—where you still have to reduce the details in many cases. At least its graphics performance remains stable both under prolonged load and in battery mode. Further GPU benchmarks are available here.

Emissions - Annoying fans

Noise emissions

Cooling unit
Cooling unit

Its cooling has been revised and still consists of two fans, but the new design is not entirely a success, as the new ThinkPad X1 2in1 G9 is quite a loud laptop in everyday use, because the fans start up very quickly even during simple tasks. This is annoying in practice and is difficult to justify in view of its low overall performance. As soon as you push the laptop a little harder, it quickly reaches its maximum of just under 42 dB(A), which is also on par with its predecessor. At least there were no electronic noises on our test device.

Temperature

Our test device's case remained pleasantly cool in idle mode and under low load during our test, but its surfaces heated up over a large area under higher load and we measured over 40 °C in several places. There are no restrictions in everyday use and usage is not limited—but this is by no means a brilliant performance either. In the stress test with combined CPU/iGPU load, the processor briefly consumed up to 50 watts, but then quickly dropped to 40 watts and then to around 22 watts.

Speakers

The speakers on the new ThinkPad X1 2in1 G9 are no longer located next to the keyboard, and the two stereo modules (2 watts each) also performed slightly weaker during our measurement. However, you won't hear the difference and in practice, their sound is also full and loud, but the competitors from Dell and HP also show that it can be done even better.

Power management - OLED and 120 Hz cost runtime

Power consumption

Our test device's consumption measurements show no surprises, although its idle consumption can of course vary depending on the background displayed on OLED panels. Therefore, you should make use of the dark Windows design and the darkest possible wallpaper to keep its consumption as low as possible. With Lenovo's default wallpaper, we measured a maximum of just over 10 watts in idle mode, which is reasonable considering the screen's high resolution. Under load, its maximum consumption briefly hit 64 watts and then settled at around 42 watts after a minute. The included 65-watt power supply is therefore sufficiently sized.

Runtimes

Charging curve
Charging curve

Nothing has changed about the laptop's battery capacity of 57 Wh and its overall runtimes with the high-resolution OLED panel are average. In our WLAN test at 150 cd/m² (corresponds to 68 % of our test device's maximum SDR brightness), the X1 2in1 achieved 8.5 hours at 60 Hz and just under 7 hours at 120 Hz. At full SDR brightness, we noted just 6:17 hours (60 Hz) and 5:46 hours at 120 Hz. The competitors achieve better values in this aspect, which is partly due to their larger batteries. In the video test at 150 cd/m², we measured 9 hours and under full load, the battery can be drained after 1.5 hours. A full charge with the device switched on takes 115 minutes, whereby 80 % of its capacity is available again after around 64 minutes.

If you want the longest possible battery life, you should definitely configure the X1 2in1 with one of the IPS panels (1,920 x 1,200 pixels, 400 nits, sRGB).

Verdict - New case design brings advantages and disadvantages

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 2in1 G9 review. Test device provided by Lenovo Germany.
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 2in1 G9 review. Test device provided by Lenovo Germany.

Aside from its new name, Lenovo has changed a lot on its new ThinkPad X1 2in1 G9, including a completely new case. The problem, however, is that users barely benefit from this and in some areas, the device is actually even weaker than its predecessor. We don't have anything negative to say about the case's quality in general and it is very stable—in addition, the hinges are now better than before. On the flip side, Lenovo has axed the slot for its small stylus, now delivering a larger pen that may be able to be connected to the case magnetically, but this doesn't provide a very sturdy solution for taking the laptop with you on the go.

The device's new haptic touchpad works well but it isn't very fun to use if you primarily use the TrackPoint, as we are simply missing the old TrackPoint keys' feedback. However, the old version can at least still be configured. Its power button has been moved to the side, which is why a button is now sacrificed for the fingerprint scanner. The keyboard itself is good, at least by current Lenovo standards. However, it no longer has a quality advantage over the competition.

Lenovo has equipped the ThinkPad X1 2in1 G9 with a new case but for customers, this brings more problems than advantages. It may have up to 64 GB RAM and the convertible is WWAN-ready, but you'll have to make do without an integrated stylus and the Meteor Lake U processor's performance is still on the same level as its predecessor.

Although the new Meteor Lake processor easily offers enough performance for everyday office work, you can't help but ask why the manufacturer went for U series processors to begin with. With its two performance cores, the current models are barely competitive and the U-series chips only feature the slow iGPU with 4 Xe cores, which only offers little additional performance compared to the old Xe Graphics G7. In view of its Power Limits, Lenovo should've simply gone for an H-series chip that also features a faster iGPU. In addition, the laptop's fans are annoying in everyday use, as they often spring into action and get quite loud in general. The optional OLED touchscreen offers good picture quality apart from its slight raster effect, but it is time for updates when it comes to the IPS panels which are installed as standard.

This all sounds extremely negative but when you are speaking about such an expensive device, you have to address these concerns. Even so, the ThinkPad impresses with its good performance in many other areas and there have been some positive developments, such as an 8-MP camera and that the X1 2in1 is one of the first ThinkPads in years to be available as WWAN-ready models (aside from limited edition Campus models). Furthermore, you can select up to 64 GB RAM and its surcharges are fair. All-in-all, its price-to-performance ratio is still pretty bad and although the laptop achieved just enough points for a very good rating, its total package has got worse and the device's development is going in the wrong direction.
