Lenovo ThinkPad P16 Gen 2 workstation review: Heavy with supercharged graphics
Nvidia RTX 4000 Ada debuts with impressive numbers.
The 130 W TGP graphics option makes this one of the fastest 16-inch workstations in Lenovo's portfolio. However, aspects like temperature and fan noise are warmer and noisier than average, respectively, as a result of the demanding GPU.Allen Ngo Published 🇫🇷 🇪🇸 ...
Verdict — Power Comes At A Cost
The ThinkPad P16 Gen 2 prioritizes performance even if it means a bigger, heavier, louder, and warmer system. If you can cope with the disadvantages, then you'll find its 130 W RTX 4000 Ada to be a monster of a mobile workstation.
The ThinkPad P16 Gen 2 powers through demanding workloads with its demanding 130 W TGP graphics to set it apart from most other 16-inch workstations.
Perhaps the most notable drawback is that the GPU may throttle about 10 percent after a few minutes of stress to suggest that the cooling solution can't sustain the full demands of the GPU indefinitely. Battery life is also very short at just a few hours at most. Even so, the ThinkPad P16 Gen 2 is still one of the fastest workstations for its 16-inch size class.
Pros
Cons
Price and Availability
Lenovo is now shipping the ThinkPad P16 Gen 2 directly from its online store starting at $1850 or $3770 USD if configured with the RTX 4000. A small number of SKUs are also available through Amazon.

Lenovo is updating its premium ThinkPad P16 Gen 2 lineup with newer Raptor Lake-HX Refresh CPUs for Q4 2024 to replace the original Raptor Lake-HX options released earlier this year. Chassis design otherwise remains unchanged and so all our impressions on the original ThinkPad P16 Gen 2 review apply here as well including the ports.
Our test unit comes equipped with the Core i7-14700HX CPU and 130 W Nvidia RTX 4000 Ada GPU compared to the Core i7-13700HX and 80 W RTX 2000 in our first ThinkPad P16 Gen 2 review. The performance uptick is significant as our data below will show.
Competitors to the ThinkPad P16 Gen 2 include other high-performance 16-inch mobile workstations like the HP ZBook Power 16 G11 A or Dell Precision 5690.

Sustainability
Lenovo incorporates a significant amount of recycled materials during production including 50 percent recycled aluminum for the outer lid (A cover), 90 percent magnesium for the keyboard deck (C cover), and >85 percent post-consumer content plastics for the key caps, battery pack, and speakers.
The packaging is plastic-free and fully recyclable.
Accessories And Warranty
There are no extras in the box other than the AC adapter and paperwork. However, it should be noted that our unit ships with a larger 230 W AC adapter instead of the 170 W adapter on our first ThinkPad P16 Gen 2 due to our more demanding RTX 4000 Ada GPU.
A three-year manufacturer warranty applies as standard.
Display
Interestingly, our 1600p165 IPS panel is from a different manufacturer when compared to the 1600p165 IPS panel on our first ThinkPad P16 Gen 2 unit (NE160QDM-NY1 vs. MNG007DA1-9). Core attributes and brightness are otherwise nearly identical between them. Other display options are available including 2400p OLED and 1200p IPS.

Performance
Testing Conditions
Processor
The Core i7-14700HX is a healthy boost over the Core i7-13700HX with a 20 to 25 percent uptick in multi-thread performance. SKUs with the Core i9-13980HX are still available which can provide even faster performance than our Core I7-14700HX despite being an older processor.
Performance sustainability is good but could be better. When running CineBench R15 xT in a loop, for example, our initial score of 3930 points would drop by 10 percent after just a few loops.

Stress Test
Core temperatures are quite high when the system is stressed leading to very warm surface temperatures as noted in the Temperature section below. When running Prime95 or Cyberpunk 2077, for example, the CPU would reach well over 80 C and sometimes even 100 C. Package power draw and thus clock rate would fluctuate between 66 W and 90 W in order to keep temperatures in check as shown by our screenshots below.
GPU board power draw can reach the full 130 W as advertised when running Cyberpunk 2077 on Performance mode. However, GPU temperature would be relatively high at over 85 C and so frame rates will eventually drop in response as mentioned in our GPU Performance section. Core clock, memory clock, and board power draw would drop even further if gaming on Balanced mode instead.

Unfortunately, there is slight performance loss when running Cyberpunk 2077. Frame rates would dip from ~103 to ~96 after just a few minutes of idling in the game and results would not improve after repeat testing. This suggests that the GPU could have potentially benefited from a more capable cooling solution.

System Noise
The fans in our unit tend to increase in RPM and noise more readily when compared to our lesser RTX 2000 Ada configuration. Thus, owners can expect more fan pulsing and fan noise changes when running different types of loads. Demanding loads like games would induce a fan noise of 53 dB(A) to be one of the loudest 16-inch workstations we've tested.
Running Cyberpunk 2077 on Balanced mode instead of Performance mode would reduce fan noise noticeably from 52.8 dB(A) to 47.9 dB(A). However, this comes at the cost of performance as noted in our GPU Performance section above.

Battery Life
Runtimes are poorer than what we recorded on the lesser ThinkPad P16 Gen 2 configuration by more than half even when set to Balanced mode and 150 nit brightness. The difference can be mostly attributed to the lack of Advanced Optimus support on our RTX 4000 Ada unit and so the discrete GPU is never fully disabled.
Deactivating the dGPU via BIOS should improve runtimes to be closer to what we recorded on our first ThinkPad P16 Gen 2 test unit.
Charging from empty to full capacity takes about 130 minutes even with Lenovo Quick Charge enabled.
