GMK NucBox M6 review: A balanced mini PC for under $300

The NucBox M6 is the faster version of the NucBox M5. GMK has swapped out the U-series Ryzen 7 5700U in the M5 for the newer H-series Ryzen 5 6600H in the M6. Chassis design and physical features are otherwise unchanged and so we recommend checking out our review on the M5 to learn more about the series.
Our review configuration retails for $300 complete with 16 GB of RAM, 512 GB SSD, and Windows 11 Pro. The starting price can be even lower at just $230 for a barebones kit. All SKUs come with the same black color option and Ryzen 5 6600H processor.
Competitors to the NucBox M6 include other affordable mini PCs like the Beelink SER5, Maxtang MTN-FP750, or Geekom Mini IT12.

Case — Familiar Plastic Design
Connectivity
While port options are identical to the NucBox M5, it's important to note that the M6 does not support USB4 despite the manufacturer marketing. Device Manager lists only USB 3.2 support and no USB4. Power Delivery and DisplayPort via USB-C are fortunately still supported.
Communication
Our WiFi tests show performance to be faster on Wi-Fi 6 than on Wi-Fi 6E even after multiple retries. Wi-Fi 6E speeds are abnormally slow to suggest possible antenna issues with the MediaTek MT7922 module in our test unit.

Accessories And Warranty
The retail box includes a removable VESA mount and HDMI cable in addition to the usual manuals and AC adapter. Note that third-party USB-C AC adapters can also be used if they meet the power requirements of the mini PC.
The usual one-year limited manufacturer warranty applies if purchased in the US.

Testing Conditions
We set Windows to Performance mode prior to running the benchmarks below.
Processor
For a midrange processor from 2022, the Ryzen 5 6600H still packs a good punch with multi-thread results in between that of the competing Core i5-12450H and Core i5-12500H. Users who can't decide between the NucBox M5 or M6 will find that the Ryzen 5 6600H is faster than the Ryzen 7 5700U by about 60 percent.

Stress Test
The CPU would boost to 4.1 GHz, 54 W, and 78 C when running Prime95 stress before quickly falling and stabilizing to 3.9 GHz and 50 W just a few seconds later. While maximum Turbo Core performance is not indefinite, the drop is surprisingly marginal.
Core temperature would stabilize at just 64 C when running Witcher 3 to represent typical gaming loads which is comparable to the slower NucBox M5.

DPC Latency
LatencyMon reveals major DPC issues when opening multiple browser tabs of our homepage even after multiple retests. 4K video playback at 60 FPS is also problematic with 15 dropped frames recorded over a 60-second period. These problems would persist despite updating both Windows and AMD drivers to their latest respective versions at the time of review.

The system ships with a PCIe3 x4 NVMe SSD from AirDisk instead of the more common PCIe4 drive likely to save on costs. The midrange SSD offers a stable read rate of 2600 MB/s which is sufficient considering the CPU it is paired with.

The Radeon 660M is roughly 35 percent slower than the Radeon 680M to be roughly on par with the more common Iris Xe 96 EUs. Though not particularly suited for most games, it is at least a respectable leap over the Radeon RX Vega 8 on older generation Zen processors.

Idling on Witcher 3 reveals issues maintaining steady frame rates to suggest poor handling of background activities or poor drivers. As shown by our graph below, frame rates would occasionally dip sharply from ~30 FPS to ~24 FPS for seemingly no reason when it should be steady throughout.

System Noise
Fan noise is louder than what we recorded on the NucBox M5. When considering that the M6 uses a more demanding CPU with no changes to the cooling solution, the louder noise is no surprise. Even medium loads like 3DMark 06 can cause the fan to reach its maximum RPM just 30 seconds into the test compared to only 37 dB(A) on the slower M5. Fan pulsing occurs more frequently than we would like.

Temperature
Surface temperatures are never uncomfortably warm. Unlike on some Beelink models, the NucBox M6 has no grilles on the top surface as it instead draws fresh air through narrow slits along the perimeter. Positioning the unit vertically is safe even though some ventilation grilles will be blocked.
Energy Management — Higher Performance, Higher Consumption
Power Consumption
The system is much more demanding than the NucBox M5 due to the switch to an H-series CPU. Running Witcher 3, for example, would demand 75 percent more power while Prime95 would demand over 2.5x the power. The Ryzen 5 6600H is certainly faster than the Ryzen 7 5700U in the NucBox M5, but performance-per-watt still favors the M5 by wide margins.
We're able to record a maximum draw of 85 W from the medium-sized (~14.5 x 6.4 x 3.2 cm) 120 W AC adapter when the CPU is fully stressed. Note that this adapter is larger than the 65 W AC adapter that ships with the NucBox M5 due to the more demanding processor of the NucBox M6.

Verdict — Great Value For The Price And Size
Much like the rest of the lineup, the NucBox M6 knocks it out of the park when it comes to performance-per-dollar. The Ryzen 5 6600H runs laps around any Core i3 or Celeron option commonly found in the sub $300 price range. HTPC users who want to maximize performance without breaking the bank will want to consider the NucBox M5.
The GMKtec NucBox M6 is all about value without settling for slower U-series CPUs from the Core i3 or Celeron families. Fan noise, however, can be on the louder side for a mini PC.
There are a few drawbacks including the lack of USB4 support and the louder fan noise associated with the faster H-series CPU. Wi-Fi 6E compatibility, while nice to have, may exhibit performance issues and the same can be said when playing 4K video content at 60 FPS. The latter issues in particular may show a lack of care to the smaller details of the model. For the target audience of home users and basic HTPC streaming tasks, however, most will be more likely to notice the fan noise than anything else.
Price and Availability
The NucBox M6 is now shipping directly from the manufacturer for $230 as a barebones kit or for $300 with 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, and Windows 11 Pro. The model is also available on Amazon for higher starting prices.
