Aoostar GEM12 Mini-PC review: AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS with 32 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD and OCuLink interface

Recently we took a closer look at the smaller Aoostar GEM10 and now we are ready to test Aoostar GEM12. Visually, the GEM12 clearly belongs to the Aoostar family. Compared to the Aoostar GEM10 the GEM12 is slightly larger. In the top performance configuration, which is the basis for this test, an AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS is used. Alternatively, the Aoostar GEM12 is also available with AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS or AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX processors. The latter can only handle DDR5 4,800 MT/s for technical reasons, although the two Ryzen 7 models work with DDR5 5,600 MT/s.
The test device with 32 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD costs at least 649 US dollars - a price is justified and does not seem excessive if you look at the technical data compared to the competitors. The Aoostar GEM12 is also available as a barebone version for 499 US dollars. If you need 64 GB RAM directly, you should budget for 749 US dollars. We think this is also a reasonable price at the moment.
In the test, the Aoostar GEM12 has to hold its own against current mini-PCs. Among other things, we also look at how well the mini-PC performs against more expensive rivals. However, the Aoostar GEM12 has a very serious competitor in the Aoostar GEM10, which is also significantly cheaper. You can find an overview of the comparison devices for this review in the following overview.

Case - Aluminum and plastic in a good combination
The GEM models from Aoostar are visually similar. At 13 x 13 centimeters, the Aoostar GEM12 takes up slightly more space on the desk than the Aoostar GEM10 (10.7 x 10.7 centimeters). On the chart, you can see that some devices take up even more space. With a height of 6 centimeters, the Aoostar devices are slightly thicker than their competitors. In terms of material selection, we see a good combination of plastic and aluminum. The latter is mainly used for the casing, which means that the Aoostar GEM12 also makes an excellent haptic impression. The underside, on the other hand, is made of plastic, which is the case with most devices. There is also a small plastic element on the top, which only adds visual value to the device. Despite the high-quality materials, the Aoostar GEM12 is not out of the ordinary in terms of weight. Our scales only show just over 650 grams. The power supply unit itself weighs 278 grams and is therefore about the same weight as most other mini-PCs in this performance class.
Aoostar also has a GEM12 Pro in its portfolio, which is equipped with a small display and a fingerprint scanner. Unfortunately, the non-Pro model does not have this. Aoostar offers two color options, as you can see in the manufacturer's pictures. In terms of price, there is a difference of 20 US dollars between the black and the silver model in favor of the silver version.
Features - USB4 and OCuLink are on board
The connections are only located on the front and rear. In terms of numbers, the Aoostar GEM12 is not overly well equipped and is rather average here: There are a total of four USB Type-A sockets, two of which, however, only provide the slow 2.0 standard. Furthermore, a USB-C connection is always required for the power supply. At least USB4 and even OCuLink are installed. As with the Aoostar GEM10, we criticize the location of the OCuLink port, which, in our opinion, would be better placed on the back. On the rear, we also see one HDMI 2.1 and one DisplayPort 1.4 for image output. Two network connections can also be found here.
There is one important point to note when using the OCuLink interface: The port is not hot-swappable, which means that the mini-PC must be switched off before connecting an eGPU. The same applies to the removal of devices connected via OCuLink. Defects caused by improper handling are not covered by the manufacturer's warranty.
Communication
An Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX200 module is responsible for wireless communication in the Aoostar GEM12. The WLAN module can handle both 2.4 and 5 GHz frequencies and achieved acceptable results in the test. Our test sample therefore ranks in the good midfield. We used the Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000 router for this test. For transferring large amounts of data, we recommend using a cable connection. Here, the Aoostar GEM12 is equipped with two RJ45 sockets - 2.5 GBit/s each.
Accessories
The relatively small box contains the Aoostar GEM12 together with the 120-watt power supply unit and a quick start guide. There is also an HDMI connection cable and a VESA mount with screws. The manufacturer also includes two passive SSD coolers with thermal pads and a set of rubber feet as additional accessories.
Maintenance
Knowing that the Aoostar GEM12 is offered as a barebone version, among other things, it is important that the device is easy to open. To access the SSD or RAM slots, only the underside needs to be removed. The four screws that secure the cover to the housing are located under the rubber feet. Care should be taken when opening the cover to avoid damaging the WLAN antennas. There is also a small fan on the underside. After removing the base plate, the two SSD slots and the two SO-DIMM slots are easily accessible. In our test system, one M.2-2280 slot is still free for an additional data carrier.
Performance - Always eight cores and 16 threads in the Aoostar GEM12
The Aoostar GEM12 is a compact powerhouse and offers eight cores with 16 threads in every configuration. In the test, we dedicate ourselves to the AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS - the fastest model currently installed in the GEM12. Alternatively, you can also switch to the AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS, or the AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX. Equipped with 32 GB RAM and a 1 TB SSD, the Aoostar GEM12 can also handle memory-intensive tasks. According to the manufacturer, a maximum of 128 GB of fast DDR5 RAM can be installed.
Test conditions
We used the "High performance" energy profile for all performance tests with this device. In addition, there were no changes in the BIOS, so all values were determined according to the factory settings.
Processor
The AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS is based on the Zen4 architecture and combines eight native computing cores, which ensure a high working speed. However, the Aoostar GEM12 cannot substantially outperform its competitors. Together with the AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS, the Acemagic AM18 delivers roughly the same performance, even though an AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX is around ten percentage points slower in our rating. These two processors are of interest alongside the AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS, as the GEM12 mini-PC is also available with these SoCs.
If we take a look at Intel's top model - Core 9 Ultra 185H - which is installed in the Minisforum AtomMan X7 Ti, there is no difference in performance at first glance. In the individual tests, however, the Intel model delivers almost 10 to 15 percent more multi-thread performance.
The manufacturer advertises a maximum power consumption of 70 watts, which is stored as the performance mode
in the BIOS. The balanced mode
with a maximum of 65 watts is the default setting. There is also a silent mode
option, which means that the processor only has 54 watts available at peak performance. We carried out all tests in balanced mode
. In performance mode
, the AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS can deliver around 5 percent more multi-thread performance.

Cinebench R15 multi loop
The Aoostar GEM12 performs excellently in the Cinebench R15 continuous loop. A loss of performance due to continuous load is not to be expected. In terms of consistency, our test sample together with the Acemagic AM18 in a duel at eye level. The maximum power consumption of 65 watts is achieved with every cycle, which in turn indicates a powerful cooling unit.
System performance
The Aoostar GEM12 delivers solid values in the system performance measurements, placing our test sample in the good midfield. The performance of all the devices listed here is more than suitable for everyday use; you won't notice a noticeable difference in normal use (e.g. surfing the Internet or office work). The 32 GB of installed RAM is a generous size, which will greatly benefit your browsing experience with numerous web-pages opened simultaneously.

Mass storage
The Aoostar GEM12 is equipped with a 1 TB SSD from Crucial. In comparison, we see an excellent result, with which our test device can secure first place. Aoostar installs active cooling in the GEM12, but this only consists of one fan. However, this combination is not sufficient to keep the performance stable under load. However, the loss in performance is only very slight and hardly noticeable. Two NVMe SSDs with a length of 80 millimeters can be installed in the device.

Aoostar GEM12 with the GPD G1 eGPU in the performance check
Aoostar installs an OCuLink interface in the GEM12, which is primarily available for the use of external graphics cards. USB4 is also available, although the bandwidth of the OCuLink connection is better and enables around 10 percent more 3D performance. We once tested the performance in conjunction with the GPD G1 (AMD Radeon RX 7600M XT) and ran some synthetic and gaming benchmarks.
The performance in combination with the GPD G1 eGPU is better than all other devices that we have tested in this combination so far. The difference in performance compared to the Aoostar GEM10 or the Minisforum AtomMan x7 Ti is negligible. Many games can now be enjoyed in high quality.

Noise emissions
Although Aoostar has installed two fans in the GEM12, the device is significantly quieter than all the other devices in this review. In idle mode, we measured a sound pressure level of just 27.6 dB(A). Under average load, the Aoostar GEM12 reaches 36 dB(A) and is quietly audible. We then reached the maximum volume in the stress test at just over 38 dB(A). The pleasant fan noise, which does not tend to be annoying due to its low frequency, should be emphasized positively.

Temperature
The metal casing distributes the resulting heat quite well. We document an area on the top as the warmest point, where we measure around 46 °C on the surface. The components are ventilated from above and below. Two fans work here to draw in fresh air. However, the lower fan only supplies the mass storage and RAM with fresh air, while the fan installed on the top cools the processor. This cooling concept works, and with a maximum of 84.4 °C, there is nothing to criticize in terms of temperature. The predefined performance limits are reached; the full performance of the AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS can be maintained permanently even during the stress test.
(-) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 46 °C / 115 F, compared to the average of 35.8 °C / 96 F, ranging from 21.6 to 69.5 °C for the class Mini PC.
(+) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 34.6 °C / 94 F, compared to the average of 36.1 °C / 97 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 29.3 °C / 85 F, compared to the device average of 32.3 °C / 90 F.
(±) 3: The average temperature for the upper side is 36.1 °C / 97 F, compared to the average of 32.3 °C / 90 F for the class Mini PC.
Energy management
Unfortunately, the Aoostar GEM12 does not win the efficiency crown. While the energy requirements in idle mode are still reasonable at 8 to 14.6 watts, they increase significantly under load. At 73.9 watts, our test sample requires significantly more energy than the Minisforum AtomMan X7 Ti, which is on par in terms of performance. In the short term, the 120-watt power supply must be able to deliver up to 95 watts, which does not cause any problems in practice.

Verdict - Aoostar GEM12 with fair pricing
The Aoostar GEM12 is ideal in combination with the AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS and is a powerful mini-PC with plenty of performance. Together with 32 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage space, the compact computer is ideally suited for many tasks. In terms of relative performance, however, the Aoostar GEM12 cannot set itself apart from its competitors, as they also deliver similarly good performance. Visually, Aoostar has dispensed with any gimmicks on our test device. If you still value these small details, you can take a look at the Pro model in the series, as this is equipped with a small screen on the top. However, we do not see the need for this.
The Aoostar GEM12 delivers impressive performance with AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS. A modern interface and a high-quality case with powerful cooling are a good selling point, which goes hand in hand with a fair price.
The case of the Aoostar GEM12 is perfectly finished and the choice of materials is just as excellent. The mix of aluminum and plastic is good and enhances the look and feel of the device. Concerning the purchase price, the Aoostar GEM12 is significantly better positioned than some other mini-PCs in this performance class. This also applies to the connectivity of the Aoostar GEM12. With USB4 and OCuLink, the manufacturer has installed two modern interfaces that can certainly influence a purchase decision. However, Aoostar cannot claim this as a unique selling point, as Minisforum has already integrated the OCuLink connection into some of its models. However, the combination with the external graphics card delivered the best performance with the Aoostar GEM12.
Another positive aspect of the Aoostar GEM12 is the built-in cooling system: under full load, the mini-PC is significantly quieter than the competitors we tested here. The performance of the AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS can be kept stable throughout. Aoostar makes a small mistake with the cooling of the SSD. Despite active cooling, there is a minimal loss of performance under load. The Aoostar GEM10 was able to deliver a more stable SSD performance with a more massive cooling unit. Another small weak point is the performance of the wireless connection. We can't quite understand why the manufacturer didn't install Wi-Fi 6E, as the Aoostar is equipped with modern connections such as USB4 and OCuLink. Fortunately, the wireless module is not permanently installed and can be replaced. In addition, the user still has two 2.5 GBit interfaces available, which is not necessarily the standard for mini-PCs.
Price and availability
The Aoostar GEM12 is available directly from the manufacturer in three variants, the barebone version starts at $499. Alternatively, users can purchase the mini-PC via Amazon.
Note: We have recently updated our rating system and the results of version 8 are not comparable with the results of version 7. More information is available here .
